Missdix,
I always taught my kids that if they don't want to get what their parents are trying to teach them at home...the world will teach them......the hard way.

It's just like men and women that misbehave in relationships.....eventually,someone,somewhere will not put up with it and they will hopefully learn their lesson and be a better person for it.

Shoot back with experienced intelligent wit.

But I was watching a documentary on aging. Did you know 50 is the new 30? People our age are going
to live much longer than our parents. Some predict into the high 90's and low 100's. Assuming one
is active and eats right : )

Reply #1: Yes, young one, I may be older than you but not so old that I've forgotten my age or my manners.

In case that one goes over their head, try this one:

Reply #2: It's apparent the your Parents forgot to teach you to show respect to your elders and address them accordingly. That would be Mr. Old Man to you. HUGE grin

If someone calls me an "old man" I would wonder if I had my hair cut too short!!

Now I have been called old woman, in a joking way... it doesn't bother me in the least.

I am pretty old!!

Talkingmale, we had better not live that long. They are predicting social security will run out in another 20 years. Nothing like a bunch of homeless centurians.

Ageless Wonder, you are so right about men, not only on this site, but on others. They can be 5 years younger than you, and look (and act) 10 or 15 years older than you, and have the nerve to say that you are "too old...." for them!

When my son was 13 he came home from the park and said "a geezer was giving us a hard time". I was laughing inside, amazed that the word had re-surfaced. "What's a geezer?" I asked. "Someone old" he said. "Am I a geezer?" "Yup".

I was 34 at the time!

Tell them "Welcome to the real world and that time will come for them as it has, and does, for all of us". And if they still don't get it, tell them to go play in the sandbox with the rest of the kiddies.

If someone were to say that I am old, I would just ignore them. They obviously do not know what they are talking about. Ask me in another 40 years when I start to get old.

I would say, "I am old; you are stupid or, at best, ignorant. Even trade."

I would much rather be old than dumb.

Dumbness.......todays dumbness is yesterdays intelligence, I'm so far behind the high tech generation.....my old world did not operate under computer conditions....instant messageing was'nt available.....I did'nt know inflation would eat up my savings....so, now an IRA is the answer........and of course, faster cars, younger women and more money............

Every once in a while I will have a younger person, usually women in their mid-20s who I am NOT trying to pick-up, say to me "You're old". It happened here on POF. I was debating someone in the forums when a girl in her late 20s not liking what I was saying started calling me "Old man". How do you respond to something like this?

I dunno, no one has ever said this to me cuz I look so damn young for my age

It apparently seems like a put-down but it really dosen't offend me. Am I expected to crawl away in embarrassment because of my age? I really cannot think of how to respond to someone who says this to me as it just seems childish and rude. After all, I would not look at a person in a wheelchair and say "you're crippled". How would you respond?

Don't equate being "old" to having a handicap-of course some young person is gonna think we are old the same way some octogenarian would think we are young whippersnappers
If a person disagrees w/ you in the forums or doesn't like your persona in the forums & the best they can do is insult you or put you down rather than coming up w/ a witty retort, that just shows their insecurities & lacl of intellect, not yours. Perhaps that is why such people are dateless...who would want a relationship w/ a negative dour nasty sniping beeyatch?
Life is too short not to be enjoyed...it's a precious gift given to us & should not be wasted

as with beauty there will always be some younger, some older... I have two grown children and I can remember they feeling like I was a dinosaur... especially not being hip to today's world... when they wanted to do something I said no to.... it takes some longer then it does others to realize that hey, my parents weren't so behind the times afterall... they realize that today... but I also realize how I looked at my own parents... not so much differently...

Manners are another matter, obviously out to get your goat with that remark whether she feels that way or not she's looking for buttons to push.... don't allow it and just move on... but I can understand I've lost my temper a time or two in a forum... and normally it is people's ignorance... you have to let it go and let it be...

When someone points out that "I’m old", chances are, compared to them, I am – which is merely stating the obvious. Depending on their attitude and my mood at the time, I’ll either ask them their point, ignore it or come back with some sort of smart reply – there are hundreds for this sort of comment.

Tell her when she knows what the words ``faux pas'' mean to look you up and if she isn't too old for you, you can discuss your age during her first dinner date somewhere nicer than Burger King.

I got a comment of being old not so long ago and I laughed that they'd still be working after I'm retired. "I'll show you my scorecards from the golf course every day".

I have only experienced the "you are old" on the net. No one dares say that to my face. I simply point out that their remark was a desperate attempt to defuse me because their argument was running out of steam. "Try again muppet".
