Strange, Canadians that live at the Castro area say the exact things about Canada and vow never to return there. They actually also say that they enjoy the freedom over the matriarchy control system of things where they come from. The hospitality, growth, warmth and peace in the South makes the South the fastest growing region in the country yet you continue to stay in America. I know since I frequent Tennessee, Georgia and Kentucky.

| Global View of the United States Posted: 4/8/2008 4:21:26 PM | Arrogance and pettiness are definitely NOT qualities exclusive to the USA for sure.
If the perception and attitudes about us are based on those qualities then Physician heal thyself.

most people around the world think you guys should have minded your own business when it came to Iraq it was are business.
we know the US version that you alone freed the world when you finally stepped up to the plate in WWII. No, we didn't free the world. The liberals gave half of the world away to the communism. We did save the world though.
Who’s next on the “beat up the bullies” list? We keep that list secrete, so the bullies of the world will fear us.
it might be wise to go after the people that wronged you we did

I'm a dual citizen and spent a good deal of my life in the states, All over it really, Mainly California. The southern states actually seemed the least intelligent must be all the bible worship and Nascar , I won't use detroit as a reference since it's a cesspool. Every country has it's armpit. It's a verifiable statistic that The US rates one of the lowest in education.
Americans are far too divided as a people, everything is a contest or a game to be won. Left/Right and not much grey area. This causes americans to fight amongst themselves so the government can play you against each other while they strip you of your rights and sovereignty.
If you spent most of your time in California, I wouldn't look to you to give an unbiased view of the REAL South. You need to live in it for an extended period of time, just like anywhere, to truly know it's pros and cons.
Do you have any clue how many Nations worldwide worship the Bible? Check it out. Do you have any idea how many across the globe (who have access to TV, etc.) watch NASCAR and/or SuperCross? Check it out. To participate in either requires above average physical stamina, being fit and most important mental concentration. Many of the participants are quite intelligent.
We are divided as a people in some ways....but, there hasn't been an internal 'war' since the Civil War. Somehow, someway, in spite of our differences, we fight and make-up like a family. I honestly believe other Nations are jealous of our ability to accomplish this feat.
Our freedoms remain intact. The recent 'security' issues have warranted measures to help prevent another 9/11...but, other than that, we, as a Nation, are still whole.
Other Nations can hate us, look down on us... but, they still come here, legally and illegally to live... they come here to go to our Universities. Yes, now that I think about it more and more... these Nations are acting like jealous schoolyard children. Ahhh well... so goes it.

| Global View of the United States Posted: 4/9/2008 6:42:37 AM | You know Jedi, I think I gave too much credit to those from other lands when I asked what our nation could do to improve our standing as neighbors and what I got is that we Americans suck because of our choices in entertainment, how we dress, and how we keep our yards. I sure wasn't impressed and shouldn't have been surprised because pettiness and small mindedness is not a trait exclusive to any citizenship of any nation. I thought perhaps some intelligent discussion on it might give a view of which candidate would be a better choice over the others. What we got was a "My non-American dad could beat up your American dad".
As for Nascar, I watched a couple of races this year and I was struck by a number of things. It's one of the most intricate sports there is in the world. There are hundreds of things going on at any given moment and the strategy is intense. I was also surprised to learn that it is a team sport rather than an individual sport. A self-professed scholar that once turned in a book report on 'War and Peace' in community college would never be able to accomplish what any of those involved in Nascar do while the Nascar folks could go to community college, read 'War and Peace' and turn in a book report.
Check your personal judgments at the door folks because those merely embarrass ourselves.

Now look mate.......our gardens are always that way.Its just an observation not a aggressive reason for war .French/Italian/Spanish people don't seem to have gardens like we do either. But you have sun porches maybe which we don't. I did think Americans had thicker skin than that !
You have beautiful natural rugged scenary....we have beautiful countryside . Your best features are the Native American cultures....ours are historical British cultures .We make the best of ours...Buckingham Palace etc etc. I merely highlighted your best features......in case you are interested but obviously you ask a question but don't want to know the answers.
Ok...about the lady who indicated that people still want to come to America......well people want to come to Britain too.We have had so many that we will sink soon. 200,000 Iraqis due to the IRAQ WAR .I interview these people for explusion or stay .Not to mention the EU and the folks clamouring to get out of Africa.
So if people wish to go to the USA......you people went didn't you ? Why the justification of the killings of the natives.....? Just because what ? They were killing others....so were we in Europe even as the first white Americans came into being. If killings can be justified...so can slavery......so why is America beating itself over that? Killing is what Americans are doing in Iraq.As Africans are doing amongest themselves today.
Of all Americans....no matter who was there before....of who is there NOW......those Natives were there FIRST and if you wish to know....your best asset . If Americans do not care what the world thinks...............so be it.....the survey is indicating to you that the world really does not care too much for America .Sanctions only bite if Europe joins in with you .And to be honest....there is an isolationsit mindset which was great for you before WW2 but.......................all you are doing is isolating yourselves
|
| Global View of the United States Posted: 4/9/2008 7:40:05 AM | Note that I nor anyone I know ever killed a single Native American in my life. If our view from abroad comes from atrocities committed 200 years ago, know that we have a long way to go to rival the savagery of any civilization that came before. Perhaps in recent years we've closed the gap and this is what I think all of us want to see changed.
I do think the misguided war on terror and definitely the historic faux pas that is Iraq with the dark cloud of bad judgment hovering overhead on Iran as well as other attitudes in foreign policy that I consider an imposition of will by my government are valid points of discussion. Of course these things are all the opposite of isolationism.
I always bristle when I hear fellow Americans point out that other countries' governments take the stance of letting America handle it for us and then they also can shoulder the burden of criticism. I consider that to be an arrogant statement... but I see it today. The EU most definitely does not want a nuclear Iran and are fighting it just as hard but are enjoying the background role in it. Let's let the big bro come and fight for us on the playground while we talk tough while standing behind him and then at home we'll call him a****
As a nation we need better guidance in government for sure. We need to do more things the right way. While we've allowed huge mistakes to occur and for the time being the rest of the world relishes the fact we're down economically because it boosts their own sense of self-worth, know that the US has been down before and in the past has come back stronger than before. I think Jedi alluded to the fact that when the chips are down, no nation has ever shown the capacity to rally together as this one has. If we have one more left in us, don't worry... we'll still back you up on the playground and you can still call us a****at home.

Right mate.....I am sure that nobody alive today has killed any Native Americans and this reference of mine was in fact in reply to the lady WHO brought it up .Re-read the post concerned and re-read my post .She brings it up as a justification and I refute that .
I refute it because I do not condone justifications for killings on any front as we were not in fact discussing killings of anybody when she came in with that .
My view has always been that to me, America was something I knew and liked as in how I explained it to you....westerns,natural beauty, cowboys and Natives etc. and that when I visited I was awestruck with New York but more with Native American culture which truly is outstanding to that region of North America and an asset to you .As you arrive at BC.......you see that face......and its stunning . These few references are part of my American perception from afar and which were real on visiting . Other things are not as I thought................gardens,shops,clothing etc etc.We have a bigger range of say..cheeses ,breads, milks, eggs ,washing powder etc etc . Lets not sweat the small stuff....I was born in Singapore....my father was a diplomat...still is and we lived in old colonial mansions but sometimes we ventured out into Malaysia, where we squatted on those pan in the ground toilets..lol......still think the place is great ! My personal self worth is not reliant on anothers demise .Thats the isolationist mindset speaking again. The world has moved on long since.
Now WW2 - America was attacked a fair few times before entering the fray . The USA seemed to think that if we ignore it.....it may go away. Then you got Pearl Harbour and the USA declared war on Japan but significantly ,Germany declared war on the USA first..so you had no option but to join in.Now the best place for the USA to fight Germany was where ? Naturally its best to be near as in Britain since we were the only mainland country holding out.If we can do it for 2 years on our own................so thats what friends are for .Britain was attacked only after honouring a pledge to France and Poland .
Out of the whole of Europe......we allowed the USA to fly from our country to bomb Gadaffi . We are the only ones who came in with you to Iraq and amongest a few in Afghanistan and we are the frontline country for refugees from those places who flee because of life being unbearable even after 5 years of American occupation.
Now look......Britain didn't want to go into Iraq but we did.Wrongly.Those people are suffering so badly. Read the statistics of what America has done there as in upheaval and ask yourself....why you are hurt ? What are hurt feelings against the injustices done to them ?
There is 50 % unemployment .Most Iraqis ive in fear of loss of life and limb-daily . Many Iraqi kids do not live to the age of 5 . Most Iraqis live on $2 per day and if they try to flee and manage it...............we want chapter and verse before we take them in. Last month we were giving Iraqis notice to quit because Iraq-due to the American troop surge was nominally quiet . Ha ! Bomb them at home....turf them out if they flee . I and my collegues are heartsick listening to thier anguish and their bitter resentment and you can guess who its against .
And we hear now that- America is wanting to use Iraqi oil revenue to build up what America has flattened despite the fact that Iraqi is now having to import oil for domestic use .Nice one .Yet - -please carry on funding Mugabe and his henchmen .
I am sure America is great and people rally together....but thats not peculiar to Americans .That happens everywhere . I said to you....I would be unhappy if America lost its superpower status .It can happen and it will happen because Iraq is a defeat .If Iraq can defeat America....anything is possible . Its a fairly critical time in history for America,Iraq and the world in general and thats why I think....going on what I hear, see and digest................that America leaves peace behind.....then I think America would be able to maintain its credibility .
|
| Global View of the United States Posted: 4/9/2008 11:07:43 AM | Nick, that was exactly what I was asking to hear. To take the things we don't see nor hear and possibly don't want to acknowledge to consider how we can best use the voice we like to think we're given every 2 to 4 years.
When I get some more time, I'd like to discuss.
|
| Global View of the United States Posted: 4/9/2008 11:40:20 AM | | its interesting how foreigners knock us.....we give more charity in the form of aid, than any other county in the history of the world, everywhere we go we leave the place better than it was before, and still america's enemies are always at work, undermining us, trying to change our government, bad mouthing us and trying to rouse the rabble against us. ironic. | |
|
| Global View of the United States Posted: 4/9/2008 11:54:57 AM | Us foreign aid, 50% goes to isreal (the folks who own you, which is ironic...), and the other 50% goes to extort resources & instill puppet gov'ts.
Only a moron takes it personally when other's hate what his administration is doing. Americans are good, for the most part sleeping people.

| Global View of the United States Posted: 4/9/2008 12:00:01 PM | Oops.... my bad. When I went into the matter of the American Indians, that was a reply which belonged on another thread to a Poster. Got my threads mixed up.
Here's food for thought. We can't REALLY know what the perceived Global view of the US or any Nation was prior to the onset and daily average household use of TV, Radio, etc. Plus, now we have the Internet - which provides a ton of info... both false/myth and facts.
To the Poster who said, in essence, that we wear blinders and refuse to acknowledge the Global opinion of America.... based on just this tiny sampling here on the forums of PoF... we acknowledge that we are hated by some.
I stand on my own personal observation that it is similar to a herd of cattle. If it is fashionable to hate America, other certain Nations do just that... follow the herd... right or wrong.
But... let it be official... here is one USA citizen who totally acknowledges and understands that America is hated by some. Who knows truly how many...but, at the very least, some. For those who profess their hatred and disdain for America, just be thankful/count your blessings that you do not live here. As for me, I am extremely grateful/blessed that I do live here. Different strokes for different folks.

And yes, if we see atrocities happening ANYWHERE in the world, we will beat up the bullies. That's what we do.
So when's the invasion of China? Don't forget N. Korea, Pakistan, Cuba (I know, I know, we'll get it right this time!) Congo (Hell, most of Africa), the entire Middle East.....
And why did we wait until 5 years ago to begin this crusade to rid the world of evil-doers? By that logic, we should have invaded 2/3 of the world starting a long time ago.
|
| Global View of the United States Posted: 4/9/2008 12:06:00 PM | 50 percent to israel??????hmmm......so they do get about 2 billion dollars from us a year, are you counting the 3 BILLION we give to egypt?
israel owns us? what planet are you living on? take that shrapnel out of your brain over at the VA......they stand alone at the moment, with the us pressuring them to make peace, a peacenik government, hamas and hezbollah more than fully re-armed and reinforcing their underground bunkers, they have to be ready for simultaneous armed insurrections right now in gaza, syria/lebanon and now iran getting their centrifuges online. yes, iran, sitting on the second largest oil reserves in the world needs nuclear power, right, lefties? and obama as president will hand israel over on a silver platter when the time comes. can you read, or view some good sources from that secluded hospital room you must be in? note i said good, meaning soros uncorrupted.
50 percent was quoted. NOT 1/3. are you telling me aipac gives more than the clintons take, or obama take in their egomainical presidential campaigns? not likely.
|
| Global View of the United States Posted: 4/9/2008 12:08:03 PM | Your figures are way off, Trapper, google it. 1/3 of the US foreign aid budget goes to Israel, and that's NOT counting an additional $7+ billion in loan gaurantees on their behalf, nor military hardware.
No wonder AIPAC is the largest contributor to political campaigns in this country, eh?
|
| Global View of the United States Posted: 4/9/2008 12:21:49 PM | So, 1/3 goes to Israel. So what? Is it not the right of any Nation to give to another whatever amount they see fit? Is Global opinion based on that? I don't know.
This is becoming a tit for tat. If American had not been in WWI or WWII, would most of the globe be under dictatorship? How quickly some forget. America depends on other Nations.. other Nations depend on America. It is so intertwined, that to say we are hated and we need to clean up our business is to look into a mirror for those casting the stones.
We are not asleep. Not any more so than people of other Nations.
|
| Global View of the United States Posted: 4/9/2008 12:32:28 PM |
So, 1/3 goes to Israel. So what? Is it not the right of any Nation to give to another whatever amount they see fit?
The problem I have with foreign aid or ANY kind of wealth redistribution scheme is that the government doesn't have ANY money to give to anyone. It only has the money it takes from it's citizens BY FORCE or the threat of FORCE. What if I don't want my money going there?
In any event, I was just disputing Trapperjohn's figures
|
| Global View of the United States Posted: 4/9/2008 12:38:08 PM | So supporting the bullies of Israel is ok? A nation has to weigh up the pro's amd con's of giving so much aide. Might keep Israel in luxury and let them throw their weight aorund.
But doesnt help the palestinians or make firends for America in the region. But hey maybe the usa wants the area destabilised.
If WWI had been left alone the problems of WWII wouldnt have happened.

| Global View of the United States Posted: 4/9/2008 12:43:01 PM | this isn't rocket science people, look at the greatest man in american history for the answers.
"I am for free commerce with all nations, political connection with none, and little or no diplomatic establishment. And I am not for linking ourselves by new treaties with the quarrels of Europe, entering that field of slaughter to preserve their balance, or joining in the confederacy of Kings to war against the principles of liberty." --Thomas Jefferson to Elbridge Gerry, 1799. ME 10:77
"I have ever deemed it fundamental for the United States never to take active part in the quarrels of Europe. Their political interests are entirely distinct from ours. Their mutual jealousies, their balance of power, their complicated alliances, their forms and principles of government, are all foreign to us. They are nations of eternal war. All their energies are expended in the destruction of the labor, property and lives of their people." --Thomas Jefferson to James Monroe, 1823. ME: 15:436
"I sincerely join... in abjuring all political connection with every foreign power; and though I cordially wish well to the progress of liberty in all nations, and would forever give it the weight of our countenance, yet they are not to be touched without contamination from their other bad principles. Commerce with all nations, alliance with none, should be our motto." --Thomas Jefferson to Thomas Lomax, 1799. ME 10:124
"We have a perfect horror at everything like connecting ourselves with the politics of Europe." --Thomas Jefferson to William Short, 1801. ME 10:285
"Peace, commerce and honest friendship with all nations--entangling alliances with none, I deem [one of] the essential principles of our government, and consequently [one of] those which ought to shape its administration." --Thomas Jefferson: 1st Inaugural Address, 1801. ME 3:321
