http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/news/press-releases/archives/2002-releases/press02192002.html

"The U.S. level of private firearm ownership is much higher than in other developed nations and U.S. children aged 5 to 14 are far more likely to be murdered, commit suicide, and die from gun accidents than children in other developed countries. Indeed, for children aged 5 to 14 in the United States, death from firearms is the third leading cause of mortality, following only motor vehicle crashes and cancer."

But I guess those 5- to 14-year-olds are part of the drug trade, too, right?

lololol Funny how the link to the article is not active anymore. A commentary hardly qualifies fact. It's the forth, btw, not third, in homicide (but that includes without guns).

In accidents, i.e. non intentional injuries, the cdc says for 1-14 (can't find a further breakdown):

Cause of death Count % of children
Motor vehicle 4,550 46.2%
Drowning 2,102 17.4%
Fire/burn 482 10.6%
Suffocation 250 5.5%
Pedestrian, Other 145 3.2%
Other Land Transport 144 3.2%
Fall 98 2.2%
Poisoning 81 1.8%
Natural/ Environment 73 1.6%
Firearm 72 1.6%
Other Transport 68 1.5%
Struck by or Against 67 1.5%
Other Spec., classifiable 62 1.1%

In terms of suicide, I can get specific number for the US. If we look at homicides and suicides in the US, they are at 21 per 100,000. In Japan, suicides alone are 20 per 100,000. That's from the UN Demographic Yearbook.

This is a question asked a lot among firearms enthusiasts.

Many women, it seems, are turned off by the idea of firearms, or the date being into them. Additionally, most states in the United States have some form or other of licensing to carry a concealed handgun.

Some of us believe in being upfront about our lifestyle, while others figure it's a good idea to get a few dates under the belt before talking about it. I'm one of the former, as it seems to be a barrier these days and I like to get things like that out in the open.

Chances are you know someone who has a permit to carry a pistol, and the chances are even greater of passing people on the street each and every day who are legally carrying. We just don't advertise the fact, because it scares people.

We do this because we've decided to take responsibility for our own safety. Of course, safety courses and training are mandatory. Most people I know who have made the decision to carry firearms are better trained and practiced than most police officers.

Additionally, pistol wounds do less damage than a knife. Knife wound damage from your average pocket knife can be worse than a shotgun blast, depending on the cut.

My point is, the fear seems to be irrational, or simply due to ignorance of the machine.

Freud did say that an irrational fear of weapons is a sign of sexual and emotional retardation.

My questions are these:

1. If your date carries a pistol, or is into the shooting lifestyle, would you want to know before the first date?

2. What, to your mind, are the positives about your date taking responsibility for his own safety, and yours, by carrying a pistol legally?

3. What are the negatives of same?

Remember, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away. As well, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled years back that the police have no duty to protect you as an individual, but rather protect the State from the People, and that the People are responsible for their own welfare.

And please, if you choose to answer, please keep politics and propaganda to a minimum.
( italics and bold print mine)
Well we sure ignored THAT request!

The first question could have been answered with a simple "yes", "no" or "doesn't matter". OK you might elaborate BRIEFLY if you answered "doesn't matter.

The 2nd question, which connects to the 3rd question, begins with the phrase "what to YOUR mind"...
Not what to "the statistics I just read" not to "what cops say" , not to what is happening in Iraq.

OP, if you are a confident and competent gun owner, why in the world are you posting a topic that by now has probably caused your head to explode at least once?

The best way to make sure you don't spend time with a lady who will freak out because you own guns is to mention BEFORE that first date that you have an involvement with firearms and STATE how that involvement is positioned in your life.( i.e. that you are a collector, or a competition shooter, or a range instructor, a firearms dealer, a gunsmith, whatever...) If she replies " ugh! I hate guns!( or hunting, or shooting sports other than hunting) " then youare probably better served to pass her by and find a woman who doesn't hate guns.

jaywalkeryyc, don't let facts get in the way of your argument or anything.

I also propose we ban deer, because :

Deer collide with vehicles 1.5 million times every year - causing more than $1 billion in damage.

Well, based on your "research" how about we ban all motor vehicles??

Well, gosh darnit, you've got me there! Since almost everything is potentially lethal, we might as well just throw in the towel on trying to maintain a peaceful society and legalize everything from heroin to hand grenades.

My guess is that most women will find a man who builds his life around guns and shooting as she finds a man who builds his life around Harry Potter and Dungeons & Dragons.

In simplest terms, he's limited.

I am employed in government and I am always armed { licensed} , and I believe women feel safer with a person who is licensed to carry firearms , I have actually dated a female officer for about 8 yrs. . Do you know that Texas is the safest State to live in , because EVERYONE is licensed to carry firearms - the crime rate is extremely low , I am from R.I. the crime rate is very high .

I do not hide my views on gun ownership or my right to carry when meeting a woman. I don't find many women opposed to me owning, carrying, or using a firearm. and frankly most of the FEW that are opposed to it, do not interest me for other reasons.

Amazing... You forget that it was the AMERICANS that liberated you and yours from the grip of Germany...

Its the "Right to bear Guns" and those guns that allowed Americans to be Americans... instead of English subjects subserviant to a tyranical King....

I dont know, I think we've done pretty well.....

God created all men..... Smith and Wesson made them equal.

Get over it.... I suppose the next time your country gets occupied, you would prefer we just sit over here, drankin beer, chewin tobacco, and cleanin guns??? Dagnabit!

What is it with the British making fun of Americans with Guns??? Next time, stay occupied......

Personally, I'm not a fan of firearms. Way back when, my boyfriend was a firearm enthusiast, but not the carrying type. I don't really have a problem with guys who like them, I'd just rather it away from me. When I would visit him, he would disassemble his gun and put it away for me. I guess the same rule is for smoking. I don't mind if you smoke, just don't blow smoke in my face :)

Well, I didn't read through many replies, but I saw one that said a man that carries a gun isn't a man at all.

Let's do a little scenario for that person. Last week two guys showed up at my house looking for Welder. Evidently about 5 years ago he took something from them valuing approx. $50. We are still alittle unclear on how they found out where we lived (we specualte that Welder's brother told them). So the first time they show up they are just running their mouths to me and I was like 'well, he will be here in about an hour if you want to come back and work it out with him'. Two days later one of the guys shows up at 7:55 AM banging on my door and when I opened it he announced that he was coming in to take what was his plus some. I tried to shut the door and he pushed it back open...LUCKILY I have a Boxer that has become VERY protective since the baby has come home and he ripped his arm open from wrist to elbow. Neither time was Welder home. I have a baby in the house. I live out in BFE and most of the cops don't even know that our road EXISTS...much less where it is. Once the ambulance was called out for a neighbor and it took 45 minutes for them to get here b/c they didn't know where it was and had to keep calling and asking for directions.

So...if I wouldn't have had my dog in the house, there is no telling what this nutcase might have done. However, there is a gun in the house and I could have protected myself if I needed to.

Welder isn't into the whole shooting lifestyle, but he has received training, etc. I don't mind it...as a matter of fact I like it. Because then I know that if something crazy were to ever happen, my child and I are protected.

Hey I know this is supposed to be just about dating and firearms but you know I've got throw my two cents in. I'm from Alabama and I don't own any firearms.. but I do like them, respect them, and appreciate them, and have been meaning to get around to getting my CCW permit and a pistol some time. But the day that firearms or pistols are made illegal is the day I stockpile as many of them as I can get my hands on. And you can pry them out of my cold, lifeless fingers. Regardless of my personal views of those who dislike firearms, any woman who has a problem with firearms can please find someone else to date. Thankfully there are very few women around these parts who have any such phobia.

And another thing while I'm on the subject-- if I had a firearm on me and some fool tried to so much as rob a stick of gum from me, or worse yet had the daring to actually come onto my own land and attempt to rob me or otherwise destroy my property, yes I would pull out my firearm with intent to use it. That's MY PROPERTY. I worked hard to create or purchase every single thing that I own and there is no way I will stand there and allow someone to rob me of it. If some poor thief does not want to be killed or maimed in his profession then I suggest he stays well clear of anything I own or have interest in.

Just for the record I am atheist, and a progressive (i.e. "liberal"), interested in preserving the environment and such. As far as how I vote, typically I abstain as is my right, but if I were to vote it damn sure wouldn't be for any republican.

You know, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and I based my own previous posts on this thread based on mine..does't make me right, doesn' t make anyone wrong.

Now, with this ^^^ can I have a giggle? Honestly, someone admitting that they will defend their honour with a gun, based on a stick of chewing gum? Doesn't that give a lot of posters here a giggle?

Or, as a lot of posters have pooh-poohed, based on a dog defending them?

For the posters who are getting ugly about it, I'm still giggling....

I dare defend all of my rights--life, liberty, and property foremost--with lethal force if necessary. I am sorry to see that others don't value these rights quite as strongly.

And what part of his statements was 11th-hour-revisionist anything? Were it not for U.S. intervention, aide, and help, before and after our official entrance into the war, Britain would have fallen to the Third Reich, despite the bravery and fortitude of the British military and population. There can be no doubt of this. The U.S. does not deserve all the credit for the allied victory in WWII, for sure, but there is no doubt that the allied forces could not have won were it not for the efforts of the United States.

Well, let's not forget that it was the Soviet Union that broke the back of the Wehrmacht, but I know it's a popular delusion here in the US to think that the US won WW2 (and WW1, for that matter) . But of course that's utter bullshit. By the time the US got here, the war was already basically over.

SDB,

That is true. By the time the US got there the war was almost over and the Germans were winning.....by a LONG shot. However, you are right about the Soviet Union. The Germans just couldn't handle the Russian Winters.

ROFL... WTF ?? Where have you ever read "it was basically over" by the time the US got involved???? If I recall, Gen. Patton and his Tanks were instrumental in helping with that...... What books are you reading???
Im not saying that WE WON the war...
But I doubt it could have been done without us... and our Guns.... LOL!! But hey, we're all just a bunch of cowboys over here.... "dagnabit" We've never done anything good for anyone else....

I have to laugh about all this. In another thread they are talking about how American Men are being taken for granted by American women. And now in this thread.....the whole American population is being taken for granted. If it wasn't for America in WW1 and WW 2 all of Europe would be speaking German.

Personally, a woman who cares enough about her own safety and her own God-given liberty to carry legally a concealed handgun would be a HUGE plus for me. Having said that though, I have yet to meet one who does. To be honest, I doubt that women of that caliber (no pun intended) can be found on sites such as this...........

Positives are that we think in similar ways, a HUGE turn-on for me. It also means that I have someone to back me up now. Negatives? I can't think of any.

For once, Freud actually says something that I AGREE with! But then again, I regard anyone who cannot recognize RKBA as a God-given and constitutional right as a total retard anyway, and judging from the ignorant posts from some of the POF-ers on here who don't have a clue as to what it means to take personal responsibility and stand up and be counted when it comes to exercising our right to lawful self-defense......there are quite a few on here it would seem. Oops, sorry, you didn't want to make it a "political" debate......

O.P., you are totally correct on all counts though. The Court DID say that Police did NOT have a duty to protect (and I am a former COP myself)............if the NRA is a propaganda machine, well, at least THEY (NRA) speak the TRUTH. The "Brady Bunch", however spews forth so many lies and half-truths, that they would make Josef Goebbels look like Mother Theresa.

bassman [edit: and Smuggler1], the German army was retreating, its finest SS divisions were destroyed at Stalingrad and the Soviet army was on the offensive.

But being an obtuse American boar, I know you learned your reality-denying version.

[Second edit: as to what books I've been reading, I've been reading plenty and in plenty of languages, (I'm European) but the point is that I'm sure everyone else in the world who reads ww1-2 history knows how they ended and who won. WW1 ended largely due to strikes and revolutions; WW2 ended due to what the SA and the Soviet people did. The fact that the US sent weapons to England which was holed up in its island or France which was taken over in weeks didn't do shit. There was no one else Germany was fighting except the SU and the SU turned the tide after two years of bitter struggle. When the Americans landed a few hundred thousand soldiers at max in France and fought new recruits, that didn't do shit - the German army was out East and it was being killed out East.]
