| Your first car ever... Posted: 5/3/2008 5:29:19 AM | My first car was a 1968 Ford Custom 500 that my (ex) father in law bought for me when I was a newlywed of 17 in 1975. It was a four door sedan with a 302 v8. My father in law was a Chevy mechanic for 30+ years and this was the first Ford he ever bought. The car was blue but had sat under a walnut tree for some time. We (my ex and I) tried rubbing out the oxidized paint but the car ended up looking like Joe Friday's tie dyed police cruiser I named it "Old Paint" and it really was a strong runner. One time I was racing back from the Oregon coast and the car blew the freeze plugs (OK, I was kid and being reckless) and the most fortunate thing was the motor was NOT damaged. I loved that car very much and owned it for several years, but when gas hit seventy something cents, I sold it and bought a 1968 Toyota corolla that I named Yoyo. I hated that little go cart so much after the first week (no power, toyoglide automatic) that I went to see the buyer of Old Paint and do a straight trade. The very sad thing? The guy got drunk and had totalled Old Paint :( | |

| Your first car ever... Posted: 5/6/2008 9:23:25 PM | My first car was Brutus, which to this day I still have some friends call me. It was a 1976 Red Diesel Mercedes 300 SD with the vanity plate Brutus. It was my parents old car which they gave me and the thing was a tank. Yeah the passenger window no longer rolled down, the passenger footwell flooded, and you had to turn off the air to merge on the interstate but it was a cool car.
If I had crazy money, I would buy one and have someone like Chip Foose fix it up.
|
| Your first car ever... Posted: 5/16/2008 1:14:28 PM | Mine was a 1973 dodge dart. I wish I still had this car today. I broke the frame in half hitting a jump at 65 mph . This is why I laugh when people buy there kids a new car for there first ride. | |

| Your first car ever... Posted: 5/16/2008 2:35:19 PM | ^^^Hey...you're not kidding. Even girls do some stupid stuff with their first car.
My girlfriend and I could have sworn those wooden planks we put across that ditch were strong enough to hold a car...oops!

| Your first car ever... Posted: 5/22/2008 6:16:32 AM | OK - it was about 1978, and I picked up a 1970 Ford LTD for $300. What a boat of a car! The doors opened up longer than many of todays cars are wide!
I was living up in New England, and winter driving was not kind to cars. There was rust everywhere including a small hole in the rear floor boards. The fuel gauge was broken and I ran out of gas on more than one occasion. Underneath the dash I had an FM converter for the AM radio, a CB radio, 8-track player and police/fire scanner.
The back seat was quite spacious! The seat pulled out and there was a pretty decent assortment of party goods tucked underneath.
Ahh... to be young and stupid again.
(I sold it after 9 months of driving it for $50)
Got good stories for the 2nd and 3rd cars...

| Your first car ever... Posted: 5/22/2008 8:21:42 AM | My first ever car was a 1974 metalflake brown Ford Maverick. 3 speed automatic inline six cylinder. It was my mom's that she gave me after she got a thunderbird. I loved that car. sort of. :)
My favorite car so far was the 2001 dodge neon R/T (arrest me red) that I drove off the lot new. The five speed was fun to play with, it had a 5 disc in dash cd changer and a sunroof. I fondly remember one trip when I was blasting through parts of Montana at 116 mph +
My current car is a dodge magnum that is fun even though it has the lowest of the low end baby six cylinders in it. The rear end gearing is set up @ 3.90 from the factory and when I save up some scratch I'm going to drop a 5.7 or 6.1 hemi and 5-6speed manual in it. The car handles beautifully in corners and drives extremely well.
With the price of gas.... I don't know if adding a hemi is such a great idea but I like speed.

| Your first car ever... Posted: 5/22/2008 9:27:20 AM | ....well, if I must.
I moved to Fort Lauderdale from N.J. in 1973. I just graduated HS. I just got my N.J. License before I got here, and my Dad didn't want me to be in a small car...in case I got into an accident. He got me a REAT TANK of a Car. It was a 1962 Caddy Fleetwood 4dr....what a BOAT! It was Tan and I remember that it had a bad transmission and it got 2.5 mpg!!! Thank GOD that gas was .36 cents a gallon!!!
My second car was a 1966 Caddy Coupe Deville. Still a Land Yacht...but better gas milage!!! I bought it for $500.00 and I had it painted "Midnight Blue Metallic Mist". Then I found 2 girls sitting on it at BCC and they set thier Coke Soda cans on my Hood and left two rings in my NEW PAINT!
I just sold my favorite car last Febuary. Mr. Linclon was a 1942 Linclon Continential Ccbriolet Convertible. There were only 136 built because of PEARL HARBOR. Mr. Lincoln was #9 and I think that he was built in August 1941.
TMI...I know, but you asked!
Chow for now, Ted | |

| Your first car ever... Posted: 5/22/2008 6:30:50 PM | Ted: In this case, there is no such thing as TMI. I find the stories very interesting. I feel kinda sad about Mr. Lincoln, I bet he was a really cool car. Too bad you can't post pictures on the forums.
Thanks, everyone. Hope to hear about a lot more cars...the more info, the better.
Got good stories for the 2nd and 3rd cars... Waiting on them, Rick.

| Your first car ever... Posted: 5/24/2008 5:28:54 PM | My first car was in 1976 and it was a 1977 Mercury Comet. I had it about a month. My dad was a car dealer so from then on, the cars kept changing. I picked out that one and loved it. The only one I ever named is the one I have now.. my Honda Civic. It's my Black Pearl! | |

| Your first car ever... Posted: 5/26/2008 11:49:21 PM | I dunno, maybe I'm missing something here, but the only way I can find to post is to hit reply to someone else's post.
Anyway. My first car was what was left of a '92 Mercury Grand Marquis, bought my senior year in HS (2003 (I'm a youngin'))for $150 (not a typo). I bought it from my high school shop teacher, to whom it was donated and he was going to use for in class instruction. I had "my" car taken away for other reasons from my dad, but thats another story. "The Beast" or "Batmobile" had no power steering (broken) no A/C, no exhaust (ended after the cats), crashed/crushed driverside front fender, front and back doors, peeling clearcoat, leather interior (it was only Michigan) . Drove her for a few months, then I blew up the trans (my fault) have you ever pulled a trans out of a car in December in Michigan in a garage? Let me tell you. It's really, really cold. Had her for a total of 2 years. I ended up fixing the power steering and A/C when I moved to Florida. Rust to all hell. Damn salt! I really miss that car. My grandma really hated it, I was living with her at the time. I had to "sell" her to the junkyard when my grandma gave $1500 for a "new" car.... I think thats the gist of it.

| Your first car ever... Posted: 5/29/2008 3:39:28 PM | Oh the memories! Mine was a 1955 Ford Crown Victoria with a 292 cu.in. V-8 and dual exhaust. Real cool! That was when I was 15 years old. The only driver's license I had was what was called a restricted license that let me drive only during daylight hours and only with a licensed adult in the front seat next to me. It also let me operate a motorcycle (day or night) I bought it from a friend's step-dad. He said I could have it for $35.00 but only if I carried off the 11 extra wheels and tires that littered his back yard. So I gave him the $35.00, loaded the extra wheels and tires into the trunk, backseat and front seat and drove it home. the trash guys liked picking up those junk tires on pick up day.lol
It did not even have a hood on it. Well my motorcycle gave up on me, so I had to drive this thing to school and to work and hope I did not get stopped! The guys at school used to mess with the spark plug wires on me. I'd go out to start it up and it would back fire and shoot flames out of the carburetor. So I knew they switched the wires to the wrong cylinders. Even had the coil wire tied in a nice bow around my steering wheel one day It happened so often that I memorized the firing order to put them back on the right spark plugs! A year or so later, right after I was orphaned and on my own, I was stopped for noisy mufflers. I sure was glad that only a few days earlier, I turned 16 and had my regular license! I got a warning ticket and had to spend $6.88 each for 2 new mufflers at good olé Sears Roebuck! And maybe 99 cents for the 4 new clamps. Yep, only $6.88 ea! Why I remember that price is beyond me. Finally one night driving home from work, I turned into the driveway and the old engine just gave up. It froze...locked up. But she got me home before she died..sob.
Never did get a hood for that car.

| Your first car ever... Posted: 5/29/2008 8:23:54 PM | My first car was a 1968 vw wagon. It cost me a whoppin 50 bucks, but the insurance cost me 500.
The wire for the starter would always fall off. So I made it a habit to aim it in a downhill direction whenever I would park it. Let the brake go... roll a bit and pop that clutch.
It was ugly, had no ac, and the exhaust leaked to the inside. So I had to drive everywhere with the windows open all year round.
It gets cold in NJ in the winter.(and the heat didn't work either)

| Your first car ever... Posted: 6/1/2008 10:14:17 AM | My first car was a 1972 Volkswagon bug - i had it painted blue ( Gator Blue ) and my tag was LBS105 - my friends called it "little blue sambo" but i always said it stood for me weighing 105 lbs. Wish i weighed that now... | |

| Your first car ever... Posted: 6/1/2008 6:55:12 PM | | My first car that I bought was a cherry red 1970 PLYMOUTH ROAD RUNNER...BEEP BEEP . I was that hottest car in town and one of the fastest after making some changes. An I bought it for $2500.00 brand new only 8 miles on it and gas was only .50 cents a gallon. After a few years I went for more of a family car and got an Olsmobile Cutlass Supreme. | |

| Your first car ever... Posted: 6/24/2008 11:10:42 AM | | My first car was a 1962 VW Bug I painted "AntiEstablish Mint Green." I bought it in 1968 for $700. At the time there were gas wars going on and it gas averaged a mere 20 cents a gallon. (Can you believe that - gas wars to see who could sell the most gas!!) Like Wanna Dance, my girlfriends & I would cram into it on Friday nights and go to Steak N Shake on 34th St. in St. Pete. Everyone would donate a quarter, we'd fill the tank for $2 and cruise all night long. The front running board bolts eventually rusted out and that gave me "wings." I have many wonderful memories in that car from trips to the beach, my "senior trip" after high school graduation, and learning to "clutch dance." To be 16 and own this great little car was a dream come true! | |

| Your first car ever... Posted: 6/25/2008 7:23:05 AM | Great story, Josie!
Sounds like you had the same car as my older brother (tho his was a 66 model).....since I was the mechanical one in the family we made a bargain that if I kept it runing, he'd take me along to the 'big kids' parties, as I wasn't old enough to drive yet.
Clean, simple times back then...nice to have those memories isn't it?
|
| Your first car ever... Posted: 6/25/2008 9:54:19 AM | My first car was an MG Midget....dark green ....it was sooooo much fun. My friends and I would let the top down on weekends and head out to the beaches with our long strait hair blowing in the wind....ahhhh those were the days... | |

| Your first car ever... Posted: 6/25/2008 11:29:54 AM | Hi Mine was a 1955 Buick Special. It wasn't a kid's car but it was lovingly cared for by the previous owner. I remember going up to Route 2 in Gardner Mass. and getting it up to 105 mph. Fastest I have ever driven. Quite a smooth ride. I wish I kept a list of all the cars I had. I remember selling a gorgeous 1952 Cadillac for $40. that is probably still on the road today. What a mistake that was.
My sister's first new car was a 1972 VW Beatle. She drove it for a year or two until one day it made a loud screeching noise. She pulled into a gas station and they couldn't figure it out. So it was towed to a dealer. They asked how often she changed the oil she said, "never". Every time I had the oil checked it says full. Long story short, the tube where you check the oil had a crimp in it. That is why the gauge always said "full". The engine had finally seized up. VW replaced it for free provided that she was willing to let them have the engine. They then shipped her engine around the United States bragging to all their dealers that it ran for two years with NO OIL in it. Joe

| Your first car ever... Posted: 6/25/2008 6:34:26 PM | | You're right Nightwing - those days were simpler and the memories sweeter. Mechanically, my VW was fixed by family and friends. The heat from the engine was what provide the heat in the interior. A lever opened and closed the heater flaps. My lever broke and my brother used a coat hanger to hold the heater vents closed that were under the back of the car. It was great during the winter, but come that next summer I thought I'd die! We crawled under there and pulled out the coat hanger wire. I thought - I'm a mechanic! How young and silly I was. | |

| Your first car ever... Posted: 7/24/2008 10:21:58 AM | 1972 Plymouth Duster, 318 modified to 360, modified AT, A/C. Purchased in 1985 for $500. Gas was average 89 CENTS.
The little old lady who owned it before me made it a "Sleeper" so she could blow the doors off of teenagers at redlights, yet still get decent mileage when she went into overdrive.
I repainted if Jamaican Medium Bue Metallic, painted the twin hood scoops Chrome with some Testors model paint (worked GREAT!) and spiffed up the chrome...it looked AWESOME!!
Got busted for 165 in a 45 and slowed WAY down....it eventually died to a flat front tire on a Tennessee mountain road during a rainstorm, went off-roading the HARD way. Its last resting place was the Three Rivers junkyard with it's front bumper pushed 3' higher than stock...lol
|
| Your first car ever... Posted: 7/27/2008 6:05:22 PM | Bigshrek: What a cool car...bet you wish you still had it. I remember them well from my teenage years.
Hey...gas is finally going down a little. I'm quite sure we'll never see 89 cents a gallon again but it is finally moving down from the 4.00 mark.

| Your first car ever... Posted: 7/28/2008 12:30:28 AM | | First car I ever owned was a Plymouth Fury. Dont know the year but my friend Glenn sold it to me for $300 in 1983. Trouble was, I didnt yet have a drivers license. He said he would help me out and teach me to drive and get the license. He was eager to sell it so he could afford a rickety pick up truck that had a hole in it apparently (Ruined my black velvet Gunne Sax skirt with satin trim). It sat in his yeard for a bit then his landlord had it towed. He had been warned but never told me about it. And he thought it was my fault. But he knew that I had no clue about cars or registration and insurance so that kind of put a damper on the friendship. I was out $300 and I thought he took advantage of me. Jerk. | |

| Your first car ever... Posted: 7/28/2008 12:41:01 AM | | It was a Blue 1969 VW Beetle. I loved the stick shift so I recently bought a Pontiac Solstice to recreate the experience and I have to tell ya, I'm loving it. In fact, it is better. If I'm having a bad day, all I have to do is drive that car with the top down and people smile, people wave, people roll down their windows and talk to me as I drive around. It's fun on wheels. | |

| Your first car ever... Posted: 7/29/2008 2:36:44 AM | | My first car was a 1966 Oldsmobile F85, it was a fairly good size boat of an auto. My girlfriend loved it because she always wanted me to drive all over town picking up all her no money friends who didn't work & then drive them around at the expence of my paycheck. I got wise to this quick & would show up at her house with no shoes & no wallet, then i could say , "Oh, gee, i didn't think we were going to go anywhere so i didn't wear any shoes & by gosh, i forgot my wallet". One night there were a few of us who had gone to the carnival or some dumbass lame thing we had available to do out in the country, the girlfriend was acting up so i was headding to her house to drop her off, to which she protested, her drunk friend decided to do her a favor & slam the shift lever into reverse while i was doing 45mph, ( i think she was trying for park ). The following summer i had a newer car & girlfriend. | |

| Your first car ever... Posted: 7/29/2008 9:01:20 AM | First car was a '69 Camaro. My stepdad use to tell me I was blowing 2,500 dollars on a paint job, which was exactly like Buddy Tarkerton's (can't believe I remember his name) in that old Stephen King movie, Christine. It was silver with black rally stripes down the hood. Had a 350 with a four barrel and burned rubber all day. Had air shocks, sixties on the back(they were considered wide back then) and a rumbling dual exhaust.
Still remember the first time I filled the gas tank. Was shocked when I saw it cost ten bucks. Oh man, would love to fill my tank for $10 these days!
