All about bacon...

A farmer had five female pigs and, as times were hard, he had
determined to take them to the county fair and sell them. While at
the fair, he met another farmer who owned five male pigs. After
talking a bit, they decided to mate the pigs and split everything
50/50. The farmers lived sixty miles away from one another and so
they agreed to drive thirty miles and find a field in which to mate
their pigs. The first morning, the farmer with the female pigs got
up at 5 AM, loaded the pigs into the family station wagon, which was
the only vehicle they had, and drove the thirty miles.

While the pigs were mating, he asked the other farmer, "How will I
know if they are pregnant?" The other farmer replied, "If they're
in the grass grazing in the morning, then they're pregnant, if
they're in the mud, then they're not." The next morning they were
rolling in the mud, so he hosed them off, loaded them again into the
family station wagon and proceeded to try again.

This continued each morning the following week until one morning the
farmer was so tired that he couldn't get out of bed. He called to
his wife, "Honey, please look outside and tell me if the pigs are in
the mud or in the field." "Neither," yelled his wife, "they're in
the station wagon and one of them is honking the horn."

I know, I know...it was bad.
Better give me some more good bacon recipes or I will keep coming up with this stuff...

Thanks!

Question for those of you who bake bacon. How long and at what temperature? I have ants that LOVE bacon so unless I learn to bake it, I'll never be having it until next winter again! If I get a teensy weensy splatter of bacon grease, the ants will come So far so good this year, but with this weekend's heat, that's not going to last for long.
So heeelllp please Linda

Hormel all Natural Choice Bacon, I love it! I like my bacon limp, lol.
Fry it until just brown, place 2 slices on top a slice of bread & cheese, Velveeta is best, broil it
until cheese just starts to brown.

I'll fry a pound, drain it well. Then place in a single layer on a cookie sheet, freeze it. Then place it in a freezer bag and just pull out a few slices when needed. Takes like 20 sec. in the microwave.

I have a book here that says how to bake Bacon:
Place bacon on a rack in a shallow pan. Bake uncovered, in 400 oven for 10 to 12 minutes.
I'll try it tomorrow, I HAVE BACON! lol.

I placed the bacon on cooling racks on a large cookie sheet. Took 16 minutes to bake in my oven.

If you have it, use your Foreman grill to cook it. All the grease just drips off and you're left with nice crisp bacon

IMHO the best bacon recipes that showcases bacon has already been posted in one of the earlier threads.

It involved packing the bacon in brown sugar fresh cracked pepper then oven baking it. Was out of this galaxy! Kudos to whomever first posted it.

I bake my bacon at 400 for about 15 minutes. Sometimes on Sunday when Im doing a really big breakfast, I'll sprinkle it with brown sugar before baking. Makes it sweet and with the salt from the bacon, its one of those sweet/savory dishes from " she who must not be named".....LOL

I love grilling prawns wrapped in bacon on the grill. The problem I always had was getting the bacon done enough without grilling the prawns to death. I tried pre-cooking the bacon a bit first once, but then wrapping the prawns was a nightmare.

So, on a whim, I tried the turkey bacon. It worked like a charm. Whereas the turkey bacon doesn't have all the country charms an flavour of the real thing, it's great for this application.

I recently saw on TV that if you buy bulk packages of bacon and, you know that you aren't going to use it all up in the time that it might take for the expiration date to kick in, do the following to preserve the bacon:

Take each slice and roll it up in a pinwheel and place each slice into a freezer-type ziploc bag and place into the freezer.

Whenever you need bacon to cook, just take out the frozen individual bacon and fry or bake or microwave as you normally would.

Isn't that a great idea?

I usually cook up the package. Use what I need, then toll them in paper towels in to threes (which is what I tend to eat with a meal) and in to a ziploc baggy and in the freezer. It keeps for a fair amount of time.

I happened to come across this recipe while looking for appetizer ideas. I'm going to try it but I just picture greasy, soggy bread (but it's not)...seems a little odd but it does sound good. Anyone else ever try it? I did see a picture and they were really neat looking.

BACON-WRAPPED BREADSTICKS APPETIZER

1/2 pound thin-sliced bacon
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 box (4.4 ounces) garlic breadsticks

PREPARATION:
Preheat oven to 425 F. Place a metal baking rack inside a shallow 10 x 15-inch baking tray.
Slice each bacon strip in half lengthwise and sprinkle one side with grated Parmesan cheese.
Wrap the bacon strips spirally around each breadstick and place on horizontal to the wires on the baking rack so they don't fall through.

Bake 12 to 15 minutes, until bacon is cooked. Sprinkle hot bacon-wrapped breadsticks with additional Parmesan cheese. Let cool before serving.

Yield: about 8 appetizer servings

It said they could be made the day before and about 30 seconds in the microwave heats them and makes the bacon crispy.

EDIT: Here is the link to the recipe...if you want to check out the picture.

Hi Naughtical - I saw this done by Paula Deen on one of her shows - so I tried it for a family dinner, I think it was Christmas. What a disppointment! Don't know if I did it wrong, but was just awful - I'm actually trying to remember what I think went wrong, but it sure wasn't like hers! Anyway, here's the link to her recipe, it uses sesame seed breadsticks:

You definitely have to make them and let me know how they come out for you!

Hi Debbie...thanks!
The recipes are similar. The pictures look good...just a weird concept.
I'll play around and make a couple and see what I think, I'll post my results when I do.

Captain - Grilling works on gas too. I have a large flat pan with holes in it designed for grilling fish and such and it works quite well on bacon. It's really nice on a spring morning to be able to take your coffee out and cook and eat your breakfast on the patio.

Now being only one of me I repackage and freeze almost all the meat I buy in single servings. Bacon does quite well. I may sound like a pig packageing 5 or 6 pieces per serving but I cut my bacon in half first so in reality it is only 3 standard slices.
