How many other people feel guilty about leaving your pet behind?

I do I do! I have an American Boxer, my son has a Red Nose Pit. They are the sweetest dogs I have had the pleasure to have in my life. I am working on my house in Ga. So I leave for weeks at a time, going back and forth to fla and ga. When I get home I am just sick because I know they missed me they look so sad, and I missed them and thought of them the whole time I was away.

The dogs love us like a fat kid loves cake. They know the true meaning of unconditional love. No matter what they forgive us and love us, are happy to see us, don't hold grudges. AND.. they don't break our hearts, move out in the middle of the night, or move out and take our stuff lol

I work full days and have a hellish commute. I DO feel guilty when I leave them on the weekends or go out at night, but they have a darn good life (both are rescued) and get lots of attention when I'm home. It's interesting to see the dichotomy between animal lovers and those who don't get it!

I thought I stated pretty clearly why I feel guilty don coyote. Also, I play with him any chance I get and I dont need to take him for walks, I have a doggy door with a fenced in backyard so he takes himself for walks. lol

blueeye(s), I apologize if someone has already posted this advice, but here's my $0.02:

Watch a few episodes of the Dog Whisperer (on either the Discovery Channel or Animal Planet) and you'll understand what DonQ was trying to tell you. Dogs live in the now. And, they proper stimulation, not just the "exercise" readily available in your backyard. Your dog may be lonely when you're gone (and there are several very good solutions to this problem available to you). But when you're back he's simply HAPPY! Seriously, though, go watch a few episodes of the Dog Whisperer... and if that is too "ethereal/pop psych" for you, try some episodes of "It's the Dog or Me" -- a UK program broadcast on Animal Planet. The trainer on that show also has a very good understanding of dogs, IMO.)

You don't mention any behavioral problems your dog may have, so if he doesn't have any (i.e excessive/obsessive barking, chewing, or other obsessive fixations) he's probably pretty well-adjusted overall. A doggy companion may be the thing to consider if you're still feeling the guilt.

Good luck.

locario, I have seen Dog Whisperer and I do know what you are talking about, and no, he doesn't have any behavioral problems. He is actually a very mellow dog and affectionate. Thanks for the advice though.

I don't feel bad. I even have a dog with seperation anxiety who has chewed through two doorways... she has relapses from time to time but is now about 12 and has a buddy so it's not so bad for her. I bring my younger dog to work with me frequently, but don't feel bad leaving her at home. Her job is to take care of the house while I'm out. We get our together time, but she's perfectly fine on her own.

I do feel kind of bad going on vacations. I miss having my dog with me and that sort of thing... but not when I'm going to be out for the night or something.

I want to get a dog (that don't shed) but living alone my job doesn't easily allow time for a pet. So until I get me a honey that does all the woman's work and can help with a dog I guess I'm SOL. I need a dog so I have a good reason to go for a walk.

guilt about pets

one thing i'll say is that cats aren't always so self-sufficient. i actually try to take my cat with me occasionally when i go camping, & it seems she enjoys it, but it's hard to tell whether it's worth it to her for the car ride & some of the hiding-beneath-the-sleeping-bag..

i know that dogs seem needier - well they're more work for sure - but a lot of cats are needy, too. mine follows me around quite a bit, especially if i've been gone for a day or two...

i'm just certain to know that her life with me is thousands of times better than her life before i got her (from the humane society).

p.s. i think it's good that you do feel a certain amount of guilt - shows you care.
