What are the Greatest myths and lies we live daily ?????
Posted: 4/17/2008 6:30:39 PM
Greatest lies and myths: That this is 'reality'. That we have a working government. That the media isn't sex driven. That our lives are real. See: The Matrix. That we have free will. That 'affirmative action' is a good thing. That Canada is multi-cultural. That equality has, in some parts of North America, been relatively attained. That the government knows what it's doing. That voting does something.

That we don't live in the simulacrum.

Actually, the Matrix is loosely based on Baudrillard's Simulacra and Simulation. I reference the Matrix because it's easier for people to follow. I have read his theories and do tend to agree with them. Then again, post-modernism isn't for everyone.

But thanks for trying to slam my opinions, I'm glad we had this little chat.

Trying? LOL almost every single point you made about "myths that arn't true" has in fact truth in them. I went for the most obvious, you know, that you based your world view on a movie.

Considering Baudrillard has stated that Matrix has nothing to do with his work, I think you'll need to do better.

There was another thread on here about that exact garlic reference already.

Latest I've read is that garlic forms one compound when crushed and yet another when sliced -- the last one is good. Notive the little old italian & silicilians cooks do it this way. This is why a lot of garlic pills do nothing and garlic powder is downright acrid!

So do I now. My expensive swiss-made garlic press never gets used anymore. I favor a tiny mini cleaver.

slice it thin, stick in butter over super low heat for 20 mins without browning it -- then add a can of chicken noodle soup and your cold wont last as long. you can do half a head and with this method it will taste no stronger than 1-2 cloves.

different chemical compounds, I tell you. Its been in my local newspaper from some university.

Also monks grow asafoetida which makes garlic seem like sugar compared to this stuff!

garlic is high in sulfur -- joints need it to prevent arthritis (which MSM and chondroiton provide) and also keeps candida, a natural yeast in all of our bodies, in check. sugar, btw, flares up this yeast.

but the greatest myth -- that we can buy everything we see and it will bring us happiness. also that we can do it and be debt free

Hmmm...there is a something plants called Lenoleic ACid which gives rise to prostaglandin 1 & 3that decreases inflammation in the body .......Arachidonic acid raises inflammation in the joint and is found in animal based foods.

I think a post I wrote on a different topic could also fit here. If anyone would be so kind as to read this and tell me if it fits. It's still morning and my thinking process hasn't started yet lol.

I am proud to say I can live with out TV just fine. I can also live with a lack of internet.

Granted these are two very powerful tools in modern society that can provide not just entertainment but also provide and spread knowledge of our world, current events, answers to questions, bring up new questions and so on. The greatest achievement of man kind to me, has been the unity of many different peoples by the use of information. Never before have we been able share knowledge instantly across our globe using a network where even language isn't as large of a barrier as before.

The problem I see with TV and the internet [which go together like 2 peas in a pod], is that people are not going out and experiencing the world first hand to also aid them in making decisions. When someone gains/shares knowledge from few sources without much first hand experience, a mislead interpretation can be spawned. I am happy that the Discovery Channel, History Channel, TLC, Google, Wikipedia, and other resources that teach people about our world exist and are easily available for anyone to read/watch. You may even use books to support your point of view. That's good.

However when you come to an internet forum and share your point of view, I see an underlying flaw in most arguments. They lack experience. If anything, we should know by now that hearing a story, and seeing the story for yourself can have a drastic effect on your outcome of meaning as well as your grasp of understanding. In turn, you now have people with only 1/2 of a story and spreading it as gospel truth. This causes arguments and we all know how heated they can be. What if this argument wasn't on a dating websites forum? What if it was face-to-face...

A fine example of how misleading information can be if only gained from TV, Internet, Books is the thread about not eating meat. I see many opinions on both sides that have many good points but all too often do people quote from resources such as a PETA website or a book that is written by a vegan as to why people should not eat meat. They get biased information and preach it as unwaivering truth. Without getting into this debate here, the point is, if you really want to convince me that eating meat is bad, then tell me where I can go or what I can do so I can see for myself the problems with it. I have been to many dairy farms [first hand experience], as well as learned about the industry through resources on both sides of the argument. By doing this I get both sides to this story and, then I can make a truly educated decision on my personal diet.

I guess the point of my post is that as great as TV, the internet, and books are, people need to get out there in the world and learn through first hand experience. If this post didn't really make much sense, I'm sorry. I just woke up :p

good article.. I know a few relatives who claim such oversensitivity to garlic. This is cool:

Since the beginning of organized civilization, we people have relied on garlic for many benefits. We use it to season our foods and for health benefits. Research has clearly shown and widely publicized the many health benefits of garlic used daily, mostly in the raw form, to aid our bodies in healing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. In the dawn of the Great Pyramids the first workers’ strike was formed due to the slave masters reducing the rations of garlic to the slaves. Once the slaves received their full ration the pyramids were built and the rest lives on in history. In World War II when the shortage of antiseptic was nonexistent, a great many wounded received a poultice of mashed garlic on their wounds. The power of garlic is tremendous and so to aid you we have composed a list from numerous publications to heighten your awareness of this awe-inspiring healer.

http://lebanesebreeze.com/benefits.html

people hate its stink now but it was the cause of the first ever worker's strike. Does that six degree of seperartion theory apply to plants and objects, too?

Silly Stephanie, you're not supposed to eat the garlic, you are supposed to hang it around your neck. Also would you like to know what the best and safest insecticide is? There are actually two of them and here they are. Boric acid(powder) Pyrethrum(liquid or powder) You can look both of these up so I don't have to explain what they are. I will tell you how powdered insectisides work. When you use a powder, you need one of those hand held rubber bulb dusters and when you squeeze it the powder comes out. The trick is to do it ever so lightly and direct it into cracks and voids. If you can see it on the ground you probably did it too heavily. Now get this part. When the particles of dust pass through the narrow tip of the bulb duster they get an electrostatic charge just like when you rub a balloon on your head and it will stick to a wall. The powder does the same thing. When the insect walks over it, it actually jumps at its body surfaces and clings to it. The insect then tries to preen itself and ingests the powder thereby poisoning itself. Now tell me this isn't cool. DDT is long gone and they replaced it with Chlordane which is gone also. Boric acid and pyrethrum are still around and they are relatively safe and they work. Pyrethrum is made from mums and used to come from Mexico. I am not familiar with the Boric acids origin but I know my dad would use the liquid form as an eyewash. Dan

The idea that anyone, including the Church, intelligently, seriously believed that the Earth was Flat, is a complete myth.

That is a great myth. Oh wait, you said "intelligently" believed. Maybe I do agree.
But anyways, some of the christian theologians that taught that the earth was flat were Lactantius, Cosmas Indicopleustes, Theophilus of Antioch, Irenaeus, Tertullian, Methodius, Theodore of Mopsuestia, John Chrysostom, Cyril of Jerusalem, Ephraim Syrus, Athanasius of Alexandria, Diodorus of Tarsus, Epiphanius of Salamis, Hilary of Poitiers, and Severianus of Gabala.

Next you'll be saying the church never believed in geocentrism.

As for greatest myths and lies, I'd go with intelligent design, the law of attraction, psychic ability, and #1 would have to go to creationism.

yes quite agree, load of b*llocks. there's sex, food, football so it obviously comes around every 3 seconds.

oh and toilet and drink - every 5 seconds, no wrong again I think about sex on the toilet, 4 seconds, no food turns me on as well. 3 seconds.

Myth : Men look sexy in speedos

Myth : Size doesn't matter

Myth : Size matters (just to keep you poor buggers guessing)

Myth : Balding, beer-gutted, man-boobied, socks-and-sandals-wearing, triple-chinned, food-dribbled-down-the-front-of-their-threadbare-30-year-old-alumni-sweatshirt type of guys can land themselves a 20 year old svelt model for a girlfriend if they keep trying.
