Nasty eye infections and whatever are supposed to be exreamly rare. My opticion (who is old with gray hair) said that in his whole profesion he has never met anyone who had got a really bad eye infection from wearing contacts.

If you're not using disposable ones just make sure you always clean them properly and pour boiling water over the case to steralise it once or twice a week.

If been wearing non disposable contacts for around two years now and I haven't had any problems.

Sorry to have dug this up but....... I'm waiting for my contacts at the moment. daily disposables, but have since been told by several people that there are many differant types of these available. My main use for them will be for just a few hours when I go out in the evenings, I have no problems with wearing my specs the rest of the time. I'd like to go for the cheapest but also safest option. Has any of you bought them on line? Or does , once you have your perscription, still stick with the highstreet optician?

wow I've posted a thread that didnt mention dateing or sex!

I dont know about contact lenses. I dont need specs but if I ever did I dont think I could put something in my eye, I feel sick at the thought of it. Good on you for being braver than me. And stick to your local optician. Anyone in Chiswick go to my Dad and Uncle for all your speccy requirements please

I buy them online. As long as you get your eyes tested and a contact lens check every year there is no difference in the lenses your optician will give you and the online ones.
They are often the same brands however they are more expensive through your optician, I pay half the price I used to for my contacts.

Do they do polaroid contact lenses yet, or do you have to wear sunglasses andcontacts on those rare days when the sun comes out?

Edit: I only need glasses to see distant objects clearly, so mostly only wear them for driving/riding. The lenses are polaroid, anti-glare, toughened etc.

If I still had to wear sunglasses to avoid being dazzled when driving towards the sun, contacts wouldn't be a benefit.

I would quite like t be able to wear trendy sunglasses. It wouldnt bother me that I had contacts in as well. I must admit when I first tried the contacts it was like magic being able to see without glasses stuck on the end of my nose so I can imagine the pure joy people must have when they have laser surgery. However am I right in thinking that laser surgery is only used for people who have had long term eyesight problems not for just eyesight problems that develop with age?

I wear contact lenses whenever I leave the house as I like the look and the ease of not having glasses on.

I prefer glasses when indoors, as I find that contact lenses aren't as comfortable if using a PC all day, and staring at the screen can make your eyes quite dry. Apart from that, it's contact lenses all the way for me.

I use the daily disposable ones and have done for a few years, you can wear your glasses all day if you don't fancy wearing them, or wear them all day if you do. I've tried some new extra moisture ones, that I'll be moving to on my next refill as they seemed easier to put in.

Sunglasses and lenses is the same as having perfect eyesight, it's so much easier being able to go and buy a normal pair of sunglasses than it is to get a prescription pair, plus the cost of having prescrption lenses is ridiculous considering how much you use them.

I still am not that confident on them though to wear monthly ones, I occasionally get problems putting them in where they don't feel quite right even though I checked right way round etc, because I tend to have loads spare I just throw that one away and then next one will go in prefectly. If I was to move to monthly ones, that's quite an expensive piece to throw away. Having the same prescription in both eyes also really helps to make them easier, as no worrying about which lens goes in which eye etc.

The only issues I've ever had, or heard of are around drink and lenses, I've had many many occasions where I've fallen asleep in them, but this isn't too bad as you just take them out, leave your eyes a couple of hours to get their moisure back, then put the next set in. My friend did try and remove his lens once, even though he wasn't wearing it and ended up at the hospital, so keep your fingers away when hammered.

Eye surgery is very expensive, especially if your eyesight is anything other than just a little bit off, and also not always successful. You also end up having to wear glasses when you get older anyway, but just normal reading glasses. Think I'll leave that to people who can't wear lenses.

look after your contacts, soothing moisturising eyedrops can help once you take them out, i used to get painful dry eyes every now and then, but the benefits outweighed the cons,

i don't worry anymore because i had laser eye surgery a year and a half ago and i'm now up to 20/20 vision. but yes, contacts are fantastic, my life was so much better with them, i still wore my glasses but mainly at night after they had been in all day, i had the ones you took out overnight, but lasted a month.

i've never had an eye infection off contacts before, but did manage to "loose" a lens up my eyeball, after a few minutes of fishing about i managed to get it back.

cheers

Oh well I must be one of the few then because I used to wear the ones you could sleep in and I developed a corneal ulcer, excrutiatingly painful and potentially blinding. Google it and read some of the horror stories. I had to have 10 days off work and travel to nearest large hospital every other day. The optician shouted at me and said 'do you know how many cases like this I have to treat every week!' Luckily it healed quite quickly but I havent worn lenses since.

I wear daily disposables. I've been wearing lenses since I was 16 (I'm now 41), the only problem I ever had was when I tried monthly extended wear ones and ended up with a corneal ulcer. Apparently you're much more likely to get one if you wear extended wear lenses, so watch out for that. It involved an overnight stay in hospital, in fact. But these daily disposables are great, it costs me £22 a month for a fresh pair every day.

I couldnt bear to put them in my eyes,i think i'd end up blinking loads and not getting the lenses in.

My ex wore coloured lenses and occasionally she ended up with sore eyes but i think half of that was the amount of mascara she had on

i'm not confessing all my misdemeanors on an open forum.
but i've had no problems with them (soft) for over 25 years.
when i was persuaded to try long wear lenses i found my eyelids flicked them out in a few blinks, they are thicker.
for quite some time now i only wear one at a time (they call this mono vision) it may sound odd but it means i can focus on both short and long distance so i can drive to the shops and still read the small writing on the tins.
when you put a single lens in it takes around 20-30 minutes to fully adjust.
i can never remember which eye has one in thats how comfortable it is.
plus points (for me)no heavy frames, nothing to fall off, no misting up and unlike glasses (which i've never had) no changes for minor differences this is because of the distance between your eye and the lens of glasses, which magnifies the difference.

as for laser i wouldn't do it.
there are many reasons but unlike lenses it's not like you can do anything about it if it's not for you in some way.
as i understand it once done you cannot go back to lenses, i've also read that some people are only getting one eye done now.

some people simply cannot get on with lenses, but there is only one way to find out if you're one of them.
when i went for mine i was given a pair and sent for a walkabout to see if i had any problems, i've never looked back so to speak.
as for infections, i've had a red eye on a couple of occasions (but i had that before i got them as well) i just left the lens out till it was ok again, then carried on as before.

i would say dont buy into all the scare stories, dont forget some people are allergic to water?
so give em a try, if it works for you you'll be wishing you'd done it a long time ago, if it dont you'll no doubt wish you had never heard of them.
one thing i would advise is that when you first start you make sure you get checked often. if there is going to be a problem (which "you" may not notice) it is going to show up fairly soon.
mine are not long wear by the way.

BUT....... I don't know what it is, some form of squeamishness or whatever, I just don't like the idea of having to wear contact lenses.

Yeah I feel the same - I always blink when poked in the eye so i dont know how i would put em in

On another note i have a mate that came home from the pub drunk, took his contacts out to go to sleep, left them in a glass of water, then woke up in the middle of the night dehydrated and accidentally drank the water and swallowed the contacts...

So use specs, theyre much safer...lol.

I have been wearing a contact lense in my right eye for 3 years now with no problems, my left one is broke lol. Just make sure you wash your hands before you put them in. And I recommend disposables that you throw away at the end of the day. The reusable ones are apparently the ones where you risk infection most, only what I heard.

I've got astigmatism too but daily soft extra moisture lenses work fine, I only wear them when I want to for leisure not for work as I can't be bothered! This way I don't pay regular monthly fees, just buy 90 pairs every so often. I keep solution with me in case my eyes dry out whilst out and about.

I did have one lens fiasco last year when I went on the worst date ever, with an arrogant man I hadn't talked to for very long on impulse. It turned out he smoked, he blew smoke in my eyes and my lenses started irritating me so I fled to the loo to remove them. After some time he came thumping on the door to enquire if I was all right. I was not. One of the lenses had broken in my eye - just torn, when I was trying to fish it out. I really couldn't get the rest out and had to drive home with one eye shut and washed out my eye desperate to get the bits I could still feel out, cursing that prat. The panda bear look around one eye didn't impress my date - I could tell - so we mutually agreed it was a mistake and we never spoke again!

I wear extended wear lenses, I even sleep in them, and only take them out to throw them away and put a new pair in. As long as you are careful with hygiene you will be fine, I have been.

I wouldnt go back to glasses unless I had to.

Hi the cats pyjamas!

Contacts, where to begin?

First of all you need an up to date sight test and a contact lens consultation. In the consultation the optician/contact lens optician will tell you what type of lens' are suitable for you. This depends on your prescription, health of the eye, amount of tears you produce and what you want to wear them for. There are lots of different types from daily lens to monthly ones. Different lens have different wearing times due to what they are made of.

Once the optician advises you of a lens stick to this lens and don’t change until speaking to them.

The infections that people get are due to poor hygiene. If you wear lenses how you are meant to you shouldn't have much of an issue. Most contact lens are NOT an alternative to specs! You need to give your eyes a break from contact lens regularly each day (depending on the lens you have).

Keep up to date with check up's both sight test and contact lens checks.

I'm not saying which one but I work for an optician so I know the deal. As for internet contact lens. Yes they are cheap. However my advice would be to join a contact lens scheme at an optician of your choice. You usually get all checkups free of charge as well as the backup of a high st store. Internet site just want your money and don’t care about your eyes. Most opticians charge for checkups if you’re not in a scheme and you’re looking around £20-£25 for each one. If you have any problems you’re looking at least two visits.....so join the scheme save your money and your eyes.

I used to wear soft daily disposables every day.....got to the stage where my eyes were so dry by the end of the day I could't wait to take them out.

I now wear varifocal specs all day at work and my contacts for nights out or vain moments

I only want/need to wear them when I am out for an evening I am happy with my specs for the rest of the time. And it seems that everyone agrees that disposables are the way to go like my optician recomended. So now I got my eyes sorted out all I got to do is lose a few stone and magicaly become 20 yrs younger and apparently I might stand a chance of getting a fella as was suggested by lovley chap on POF.

Internet contact lenses are cheap but they are exactly the same as the ones the opticians sell often for double the price. I can still get a contact lens check up with my optician, I would pay £15 for it, but I would also pay £63 every six months as opposed to paying £33 when I buy the lenses online. For exactly the same type of lenses.

There are some internet contact lens sellers that won't sell you the lenses until they have a copy of an up to date prescription from you. My optician only asks me to get a contact lens check every 12 months and did so even when I was on a contact lens scheme. I've been buying contact lenses online for 2 years now and only go to my optician for my glasses and I've never had any problems with my eyes.

Sight tests are free on the NHS in Scotland so I don't pay for my sight test. Staying with the contact lens scheme with my optician didn't save me money, over the course of a year it cost me considerably more even counting the fact that I pay for my contact lens check. I wouldn't advise someone that has never worn lenses before to buy off the internet but I've been wearing contacts for over 20 years and all I was doing in the end was paying the optician more money for lenses I could buy myself.

At long last Ive received my contact lenses and how feaky are these. They are" mono vision" which apparently means they are like my reading glasses in one eye and my distance glasses in the other. Close up is fine at the moment but seeing further away is very weird the opticition assures me I will get used to it. Has anyone else used these kind of lenses? I love not having my glasses on but I'm not entirely convinced I will get used to the strange vision.
