Smart is sexy in my book...
Join the club.
Regardless of how hot the photo is, if the profile is short, vague, me-too, unpunctuated, un-spell-checked, grammatically challenged, upper-case and/or emoticon abused, then a tingling in the spine, or anywhere else, I do not get.
I noticed one or two femme posters who are consistently & sexily (not necessarily sexually) droll, but unfortunately they're more than the 10km radius from the epicentre of my comfort zone (I'd give anything to be not so lazy).

i have always wondered where the idea of cutting a whole heap of letters out of words text messages came from and Hagars has just answered it for me, they know that it isn't important because the human brain will still understand what it is saying anyway. So looks like i have been the ignorant one all this time.

hahaha....yes, smart is sexy! There's a lot of attraction generated by an intelligent and insightful conversation that sometimes may only happen after a few meetings and each person is comfortable. So, judging a book by its cover may not allow that discovery of "smarts". If a profile hasn't been carefully edited though, it may be dismissed for lack of "smarts". Personally, I know I'm not perfect and don't expect anyone else to be....but definitely have a pet hate of "definately"!!! Have you seen how many times that incorrectly spelt word comes up in profiles and conversations?

Yes it's defin ... er ...defin.... er stuff it , it's a dilemma .And we all use that word meaning that a thing is for sure so much . I used to be quite confident spelling it , now i'm so hesitant that .... see there's good to be found in every dilemma ..... that I've discovered all sorts of ways of not spelling .. of not posting ever using that word .. so in the long run i've expanded my vocabulary !! WooHoo!

Confidence with an audience and the ability to be an effective communicator. Are these not the cornerstone of communications with one or more people, whether verbal, written or otherwise ?

as in street speech we don't speak "the kings english" any more...

while I try, myself, to be the best speller and grammarian I can be at the time... and use a dictionary book thingy before posting a word that looks insanely wrong for some reason... it's usually because it's spelled wrongly..mistakes seem to be part of web forum posts and I don't take other peoples gaffes to heart...

where a misspelt word causes a confused meaning there may be a need for someone to ask for clarification... though that's not often....

usually the meaning is clear with or without spelling errors....

While I do not condemn someone for having a few careless spelling mistakes, I am a bit of a stickler for grammar. How something reads can vary greatly with a misplaced comma (or lack of, as I am finding more and more profiles completely forget about those little dashes and dots)

The other thing that sh1ts me right up the wall is the lack of proper words in profiles. Often I can't even make out what the author is even trying to say. While I love the fact I'm Australian, and drop Aussie slang around, I can't get my head around this Ghetto Rot that pervades peoples profiles.

For example
Yo, I'm 24 I lyke hangin wif mah homiez and havin a gud tyme. Msg me if U wna chat

The last thing that made me go WTF??..... ^^^^^^^^^ This is it.

Can anybody be expected to be attracted to someone who writes like they have a mental disability?

Here we see natural selection in progress. Nick finds a nice girl who can express herself in writing adequately and they breed a new generation of literate children. The 'Homie' finds a gud Ghetto stud who doesn't mind about spelling and grammar, or perhaps is equally contemptuous, and they breed a new generation of illiterates. Then in a few years they all get on PoF (I'll be still here probably) and complain about it on a new thread

I think "literacy snobbishness" cuts both ways. I've seen people get bagged for speaking/writing well, every bit as much as I've seen people get bagged for speaking/writing badly. In some circles, if you happen to have a pretty good mastery of language and enjoy playing with words then you could well be perceived as 'socially inferior' and ostracised, which, as far as I am concerned, is still within the definition of snobbishness.

Clearly people can possess quite a formidable IQ without necessarily being able to express themselves. And this is without exploring other forms of intelligence.

Can someone please relieve the Toy's obvious boredom and participate in some sort of debate? For a self tagged smart ar.., I mean smart person, you would think he could be more subtle about expressing himself.

Well I think if literacy can't handle a bit of artistic license we'd better start burning books, plenty of the most popular aren't entirely grammatically sound or correctly punctuated.
As an artform, the written word is designed to inspire imagery.

When we look at gangsta/sms talk on the web and frown, it's really about the communicator's intentions of elicited imagery. We think, but hang on, why do I want to imagine myself as a violent abusive person or that I'm using a mobile phone here?
It's not about literacy. It's about what's up with that twat.

I agree

Some of the posters on here have amazing rhetoric, and although their writing is grammatically incorrect, it is full of imagery and an absolute pleasure to read.

What I have found, particularly on dating sites, is that although someone can express themselves in writing eloquently, it doesn't all ways mean that they can do the same in person, which has surprised me on a few occasions. So as far as an e-mail from the opposite sex is concerned .... I wouldn't be too quick to judge based on their literacy standards.

But, have to admit ... the e-mails I receive in English, with incorrect spelling and without punctuation, are more likely to get a reply from me than those written in correct msn language with punctuation ....

So as far as the OP is concerned ... No ... I am not a literacy snob .... but I love "words" and enjoy watching what people can do with them .... especially on here.....

The last time I checked the language wasnt dead, evolution has however been through a bit of a step change in the last 10yrs since the mobile revolution, I have no problem with this. I do however think that a lot of this could be blamed on phonetic teaching methods where the spelling is not as important as the sound (mind you it fits the mobile/txt style)

It is important to to remember that the use of complex linguistic multi syllabic descriptors are great for "blowing your ar$e" at the conference or here on Pof when you are attempting to show how up yourself you are, but will just alienate your from a less "literate" but non the less intelligent or valuable part of the society.

Puffery and pomposity were developed as a tool of the snob to belittle the proletariat and to maintain a sense of elitism.

The art of communication is to clearly pass a message to the receiver, the art of being a good communicator is to do so at the level where your message is not misunderstood.....

As for getting a message on here, I tend to focus on the content as to value, if its not rude or invasive, but forthcoming and portrays pleasant traits then its coooool

Keep smiling

To be educated is a difficult term, in what kind of education are you seeking. I am university educated and am currently comleting my masters, I know of people completing their doctorate, but I do not see them as educated! To me education comes with lifes experiences and to understand the world of others. For me the biggest turn off when communicating with someone is ignorance. I like to think of myself as well educated, not because I have studied at university, but because I have travelled, I have experienced what people in other countries have experienced, I have not stayed in my four star hotel but have lived in villages and communities with the people. I have interest in others and love to learn about other cultures and people, and for me the best way is to emerse yourself amongst them. To understand poverty, illness, hardship and the true sense of family is education.

I used to think I was a literacy snob, I used to cringe at the email that arrived with countless spelling mistakes, but my travels and meeting new people both here in Australia and overseas has made me overlook this. There are many different forms of English, and that is what we need to accept. There is our own Aboriginal English, many of our migrants have their own form and mixing now with mainly Africans and Jamicans I am learning an entire new English. I have teenagers that constantly use text speak. I think instead of maybe looking down at people that dont use "c0rrect" english, we need to think about what is correct english and are we imposing our values onto someone else. Even the education department is changing some of its ideas about English and Grammar, students are being assessed in text speak in exams, books are being brought out in Aboriginal English. New words and spellings are being added to the dictionary on daily basis, we too need to move with the times of a changing society, everything is changing, including our language.

Likewise, a limited vocabulary doesn't hint at membership of the dullard club, it screams paid up subscriber.

How can anyone seriously say otherwise?

This is not factual...... In fact it's'''' free'''' being a dullard.. we are even given a really big hat.. (for nothing) that has a huge''' D '''on it...

The art of communication is to clearly pass a message to the receiver, the art of being a good communicator is to do so at the level where your message is not misunderstood.....

Now don't have a heart attack... but I agree with you..

My son loves words.. the dictionary might be.. one of his favourite books..(in fact before his daughter was born.. he informed me.. we would only speak proper english.. no shortened words/slang.. .. I said nothing.. b/c things can change once someone actually has a child.. but I thought I hope she dosent get beat up in the playground for saying.. excuse me.. I need to use the lavatory.....) Im not even allowed to use the shortened word for her name..
He used to live with a mutual.. older... mate.. and they... would learn a new word every week.... I think it had to have at least 9 letters in it.. and must be used in context everyday for a week..... Id quote 1 of the words.. but I don't know how to pronounce/nor spell one..
I tried to explain to my son.. why I don't use big words.. re the whole.. it's a lingo to connect...communicate.. and get the message across... If I have to keep explaining what a word means.. Im making someone feel smaller within themselves.. and that to me.. causes my soul pain..
I speak street.. and theres where.. I mostly am.. and do the most good in my life.. if I could ever ..even be considered.. being of any use..

To be educated is a difficult term, in what kind of education are you seeking. I am university educated and am currently comleting my masters, I know of people completing their doctorate, but I do not see them as educated!

Yep some are completely clueless..

For me the biggest turn off when communicating with someone is ignorance

again I agree.. but would add.. in my experience arrogance.. is the quality that screams to me consistently.. unintelligent.. for various reasons.. it closes the mind/heart/soul.. and can disregard.. options/potentials and latteral problem solving..

I have interest in others and love to learn about other cultures and people, and for me the best way is to emerse yourself amongst them. To understand poverty, illness, hardship and the true sense of family is education.

arrrhhh but this is the path of wisdom...... (I like you.. already.. you seem like you will use your education to make the world a better place)..

but my travels and meeting new people both here in Australia and overseas has made me overlook this. There are many different forms of English, and that is what we need to accept.

Yes .. throughtout my life.. It seems I have dated/or had friends.. who are first generation..aussies.. so alot of their parents... knew no or little english...
To use big words.. was to belittle them.. rather than.. speak at a verbage..they could comprehend/context..
I actually admire... people who learn English as a 2nd lingo.. It can be quite complicated in various word meanings....context..etc..

as for gramma? ... the world just needs to use more fooking dots.........
its all about dots.. we would all unite...be happier with more...dots...

Yes it is in but, there is a particular thread in here and some others where without the “complex linguistic multi syllabic descriptors” phew, that was a mouthful … lets call them (lmsd's) the imagery would be totally lost as would be the message …. So I guess when someone is trying to “get their message across” sometimes the higher the standard of rhetoric the better the message is received. It just depends on what the message being sent is trying to convey as to whether or not (lmsd's) are helpful.

I think it is a wonderful gift to have the ability to write a picture …. and am glad some of the posters on here don't hold back.

And I totally agree soulmate … Bring on the dots!!!

Gadzooks, wow, I nearly fell off my chair in amazement, this means a great deal to me and I will cherish this moment for ever :sarcasm:

......but really "Whakanui ana mātau i te tangata pono.Tipuna wahine, kaumātua"

perhaps more Aussies would be better served learning the culture of their adopted homeland rather than buggering off to become so worldly

Yes Gramma more dots, this is to indicate rambling.....for me its because I studdertype and it gives me time for my fingers to catch up to my brain...lol

I think you've all gone off on a tangent. The ability to communicate is not the same as literacy.

This is true... drum roll.. 'your right'... .....
And I do respect.. and admire your obvious passion/love.. for literature..
although in context...of online literacy/communication.. re: the Q... being a snob.. might bring it into... not being a tangent..
and I actually believe.. certain people have certain..interests/passions.. to help keep some things alive.. throughout the ages..
my passion is real plants... I still have baby strawberry plants from ..my grandmas garden.. from when I was a child..... a real plant..
art... for eg.. I have no interest in art.. although i have artist friends ..who I admire greatly for their talent..
I myself own art... by inheritance.../choice..to keep it..... But not for the art itself.. but rather..
To preserve it.. and I dearly respect.. old things....(although Im thinking maybe someone with a passion in art..might know how to preserve it better than I.. b/c the last person who stored it for me.. had no such conviction and it was severly damaged..
that hurts the soul.. (maybe like someone who adores literacy... might cringe at say.. dots for eg)or textspeak..etc..
I respect that someone over 100 years ago saw a scene/painted it... and part of them lives on through it..
and old furniture.. crafted/passionately... someones/life/time/moments..
things of old.. seem to have been made with more passion/integrity..
and I think that's worthy of respect...
also I am the keeper of all the family hand me downs.. cause I won't be tempted to sell it.. but I hold it to pass onto my son/grandaughter.. etc..
although my son informs me.. he much prefers modern... than a red cedar table..
and I donot expect him nor my grandchild to adopt my view on it.. but rather point out the loving carving.. the uniqueness of red cedar.. and if they' don't get it'..
then they can sell it...

So for those that love the great's.. the poets.. the evolving of the written word...
I only hope that they teach it..passionately../lovingly..like a mentor.. to those who show an interest.. or rather'''' inspire''''''' and cultivate... an interest..... to pass the love/respect of literature on..
going back to my dunces corner and readjusting my hat..

peace
