Woke up in my clothes again this morning. Don't know exactly where I am. I should heed my doctor's warning, he does the best with me he can. Claims I suffer from delusion I'm so confident I'm sane. this cannot be an optical illusion but how do you explain shadows in the rain.
Sting.
I listen to the lyrics mostly but then I am a poet. Then tune and rhythm. to me the two are inseperable.

Posted: 6/10/2009 4:13:17 AM | Some songs, or pieces of music, can completely take me over and wrench different emotions from me if I allow them to. There are some pieces of music that are so intense that, even if I try, I can't fight an emotional response. I am completely at its mercy.
That can be quite useful as some music puts you in a great mood and is a great 'pick me up'. I'm thinking of pop music now. Mostly fluff and the lyrics mean almost nothing without the musical heartbeat.
Reading some of the lyrics some posters have quoted here... I can intellectually appreciate the written words, and perhaps I'd even be moved were the words quoted out loud, but without music the words have way less impact.
I think also that one's current emotional state influences the impact of the lyrics in a song, and that in turn increases the enjoyment of the musical or rhythmic side of the song.
What does Elton John sing about 'Sad songs'?
If someone else is suffering enough to write it down When every single word makes sense Then it's easier to have those songs around The kick inside is in the line that finally gets to you and it feels so good to hurt so bad And suffer just enough to sing the blues
Quite a naff song, and the words aren't all that deep either... but when I'm blue I'm like, "Yeah, right on Elton... you got it babe!"
Love songs... ugh... make me puke! However, if I'm feeling romanitically inclined and am suffering a temporary loss of sanity (comparitive to my usual insane state that is), love songs seems written 'just for me/us' and my heart beats as one with the corny bull being sung.
Break up songs... heartbreak... same effect.

Posted: 6/10/2009 4:51:03 PM | The opening to 'riff raff" reminds me of what i take as an old highlander war cry from bagpipes except its done with guitar then as what happens in a battle all hell breaks out with the most intense and powerful riffs ive ever heard. eventually the songs peters out to the war cry announcing the battle is over!!!
ac/dc then took the rocknblues world by force with 3 mass selling albums a casulty(lead singer dead) and fame with the ability to write there own version of history!!

| Whats rocks you in a song...., lyrics, tune, rhythm or all of them ?? Posted: 6/16/2009 12:54:40 AM | I think I live in a time warp, but for me the best music will always be the era that i grew up in...the 60's & 70's. I especially love all the soul and motown music from that era.
The passion of the lyrics and the soulfull voices still make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.....and add to that the fact that its still the best dance music in the world and it wins me every time

| Whats rocks you in a song...., lyrics, tune, rhythm or all of them ?? Posted: 7/7/2009 3:48:01 AM | What a great thread to read. I know for me, music is primarily a mood based decision to play, if I am in a good mood and upbeat, I might throw on something current like Black Eyed Peas - Boom Boom Pow. If I am feeling nostalgic, I put something on from the 80's. If I am feeling a little tired or down, throw on some Phil Collins. This is what I play for *me*
It also depends on gatherings as well, as I gather most would throw on some mood music for dinner parties, get togethers, late night drinks.
Lastly, one usually likes to put on that music for that special someone, for the purpose of pleasing, impressing, enticing that one.
Music can alter a mood to somewhat of a degree too, I ask how does one feel (this may be more one for us males) does one feel after EYE OF THE TIGER plays (from the first Rocky film) ???

A buzzard took monkey for a ride in the air The monkey thought that everything was on the square The buzzard tried to throw the monkey off his back But the monkey grabbed his neck and said-- Now listen, Jack
Straighten up and fly right Straighten up and fly right Straighten up and fly right Cool down, papa, don't you blow your top. Ain't no use in divin' What's the use in jivin' Straighten up and fly right Cool down, papa, don't you blow your top.
The buzzard told the monkey "You're chokin' me Release your hold and I'll set you free The monkey looked the buzzard right dead in the eye and said Your story's so touching but it sounds just like a lie
Straighten up and fly right Straighten up and stay right Straighten up and fly right Cool down, papa, don't you blow your top.
(instrumental interlude)
Straighten up and fly right Straighten up and stay right Straighten up and fly right Cool down, papa, don't you blow your top.

Posted: 7/7/2009 11:22:25 AM | | Great lyrics (preferably meaningful) with a good hook, sung with harmonies that make the hair on the back of your neck stand up, and an interesting chord progression do it for me. Examples: 10cc's "I'm Not In Love", World Party "She's The One", Blockheads "Sex and Drugs and Rock'n'Roll", Eagles "No More Coudy Days", Keith Urban's "Tonight I'm Gonna Cry", Doobie Brothers "China Grove", most of The Corrs material, and of course a song that has it all... John Lennon's "Imagine".

It was "Blowing in the Wind' ... well that was THE end for my sister and me . We were almost choking with layghter but fortunately could turn the tears into a sort of grief stricken fit . I will always think of my fearsome Aunt whenever I hear that song . I hope she got the answer she was hoping for .

The lyrics of Metric (just one song actually.. no not telling) The rhythm of the Ting Tings The memories of Floyd or AC/DC or the Angels (memories long gone but still influential) The humour of Lily Allen The minor key melancholy of Sarah Blascoe (sadness) The energy of Cat Empire The angst of Natalie Imbruglia The confusing weirdness but musical genius of Regina Spektor...
Music is so incredibly influential - put the right cd on and it will change you in a moment....

| Whats rocks you in a song...., lyrics, tune, rhythm or all of them ?? Posted: 11/10/2009 12:57:36 AM | *I'M MY OWN GRANPA.* Oh, many, many years ago When I was twenty-three I was married to a widow Who was pretty as can be This widow had a grown-up daughter Who had hair of red My father fell in love with her And soon the two were wed
This made my dad my son-in-law And changed my very life For my daughter was my mother 'Cause she was my father's wife To complicate the matter Though it really brought me joy I soon became the father Of a bouncing baby boy
This little baby then became A brother-in-law to Dad And so became my uncle Though it made me very sad For if he was my uncle Then that also made him brother Of the widow's grown-up daughter WHo of course is my step-mother
Chorus I'm my own grandpa I'm my own grandpa It sounds funny I know But it really is so Oh, I'm my own grandpa
My father's wife then had a son Who kept them on the run And he became my grandchild For he was my daughter's son My wife is now my mother's mother And it makes me blue Because although she is my wife She's my grandmother too
Now if my wife is my grandmother Then I'm her grandchild And every time I think of it It nearly drives me wild For now I have become The strangest case you ever saw As husband of my grandma I am my own grandpa
[chorus]

| Whats rocks you in a song...., lyrics, tune, rhythm or all of them ?? Posted: 11/10/2009 6:29:22 AM | More often that not a song gets my attention because of its obvious meaning expressed with beautifully simple lyrics
An example would be this excerpt from Dylan’s Jokerman
Well, the Book of Leviticus and Deuteronomy The law of the jungle and the sea are your only teachers In the smoke of the twilight on a milk-white steed Michelangeo indeed could've carved out your features Resting in the fields, far from the turbulent space Half asleep near the stars with a small dog licking your face.
Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune Bird fly high by the light of the moon Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman.

| Whats rocks you in a song...., lyrics, tune, rhythm or all of them ?? Posted: 11/10/2009 4:31:58 PM | It's a mood thing for me and there are too many to list. The music played at funerals is always interesting ( or maybe predicable) at my mothers we played Bette Middlers" The Rose" and as the coffin was sliding behind the curtain, Vera Lynne" Wish me luck as you wave me goodbye." Some were a little shocked but Mum would have loved it! I have told my kids I want Beatles "In my life" and "Monty Python "Always look on the bright side" | |

I love music and singing - some attracts me by the sound or rythm and others by the lyrics.
I am an old school Soul Music lover, motown, stax etc etc One of my favourite numbers is Summer Breeze by The Isley Brothers, it's like magic to my ears, best played very loud.

| Whats rocks you in a song...., lyrics, tune, rhythm or all of them ?? Posted: 11/11/2009 12:51:00 AM | In the last few years I've started to listen to a lot of world music - the rhythm and the music can be very special.
But whenever I need to think about something and make a decision - its Pink Floyd "Wish You Were Here". Only time I ever listen to it - its that special piece of music that puts everything into perspective.

| Whats rocks you in a song...., lyrics, tune, rhythm or all of them ?? Posted: 11/11/2009 1:13:52 AM | I taped a "live at the basement" gig off abc2... it was Lily Allen in a small studio with about 30 people sitting around.. and just a piano and acoustic guitar... Excellent!!
check it out, it should be available on the web site or the jjj video library..
... when you get past the "cute sweet" delivery there's some "spot on" observations and sentiments about the current times in her lyrics... honest, to the point...
everybody's at it, the fear, to name a few....
