| Philosophical Dilemma : Throw it away or fix it? Posted: 5/8/2008 9:55:42 AM | So Steven,
You say it simply comes down to what is CONVENIENT for you-- responsibility, damage to the environment to make MORE stuff, and landfills don't matter?
How NICE it would be to see everything so simply as you do. I must be thinking too much.

| Philosophical Dilemma : Throw it away or fix it? Posted: 5/12/2008 7:17:44 PM | James,
Being an amateur philosopher, I've always "thought" philosophical questions were subject to varying answers with each having it's own merit.
In this case however, I'll have to plead guilty at being in the Repair Industry. And there is a rather clear-cut answer to this question.
If the item is still currently available in a new state, and the cost of that item is less than the cost of repairing the old one, the old one is tossed in the scrap, and a new one takes its place. Now, anything is repairable. (If a Man, [or Woman] made it, it is indeed repairable.)
If the item was produced under tightly controlled manufacturing processes such as a printed circuit chip, a camera lens, etc. it's not likely repairable, and would have to be replaced despite the best efforts of the do-it-yourself person.
Some items that are no longer manufactured, or specialized pieces of equipment that were built as a one-time installation, (if still needed when broken down) will be repaired at most any expense. An electric generator used to produce electricity in a huge power plant for example is going to be repaired, and not thrown away. Or a specific component making up other pieces of an apparatus that was made to do a very specific task, operation, "thang", and so on is going to be Fixed.
Products "consumed" by the general public are typically not in the category of being economically repairable. Hence, you throw them away, and buy new.
Certain aspects of Art Work may be another twist to the plight. Even though they were produced by the hand(s) of mankind, most attempts to fix, or duplicate the original will suffer in some way, shape, or form. And the passion that existed when these works were produced may no longer live as well.
Throw it away, and buy a new one.
Or, if you're really full of energy. Design, construct, test, tweak, and build your very own weed trimmer! When it eventually fails due to wear, and tear... you will be the soul expert living as to how it works, and operates.
You'll be able to fix it yourself!
