The following is from Matthew Henry's commentary on the bible :-

The wine which was thus miraculously provided was of the best and richest kind, which was acknowledged by the governor of the feast; and that it was really so, and not his fancy, is certain, because he knew not whence it was, v. 9, 10. 1. It was certain that this was wine. The governor knew this when he drank it, though he knew not whence it was; the servants knew whence it was, but had not yet tasted it. If the taster had seen the drawing of it, or the drawers had had the tasting of it, something might have been imputed to fancy; but now no room is left for suspicion. 2. That it was the best wine. Note, Christ's works commend themselves even to those that know not their author. The products of miracles were always the best in their kind. This wine had a stronger body, and better flavour, than ordinary. This the governor of the feast takes notice of to the bridegroom, with an air of pleasantness, as uncommon. (1.) The common method was otherwise. Good wine is brought out to the best advantage at the beginning of a feast, when the guests have their heads clear and their appetites fresh, and can relish it, and will commend it; but when they have well drank, when their heads are confused, and their appetites palled, good wine is but thrown away upon them, worse will serve then. See the vanity of all the pleasures of sense; they soon surfeit, but never satisfy; the longer they are enjoyed, the less pleasant they grow. (2.) This bridegroom obliged his friends with a reserve of the best wine for the grace-cup: Thou hast kept the good wine until now; not knowing to whom they were indebted for this good wine, he returns the thanks of the table to the bridegroom.

..@Funn1.. The bottles you speak of in regards to new wine, is better translated animal skins...New wine is not necessarily without alcohol, it may have less alcohol content because it has yet not finsihed fermenting. Intially the fermentation is quite rapid in the first few days then slowly ferments and ages. Thats why people preferred the old wine - aged not the higher alcohol content..

Matt 9:17 Nor do men put new wine into old skins, otherwise the skins burst and the wine is poured out, and the skins will be destroyed; but they put new wine into new skins, and both are preserved together.

And if you still insist on new wine being alcohol free, why not scripture interpret scripure about new wine??

Acts 2:13 Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine. But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words. For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.

Still think that new wine was grape juice

In Jesus' time on earth, animal skins were used as we do beverage bottles to day for storing and carrying. Because used, old wine skins (bottles) had lost their elasticity, being less flexible, every one knew the truism of Jesus' statement. If new wine were put in an old skin, the chemical activity and expansion of the new wine would cause the old skin to swell, crack and rupture, spilling the valuable wine. Not only that, a perfectly good old wine skin, useful for old wine, would be ruined.

Everything in moderation. Yes alcohol is good for you and accepted by most religions. In Muslim countries opium and hashish is ok as it is their main produce, probably used medicinally. Any doctor will tell you that Marijuana, hashish and opium are better for you than alcohol. Opium was actually sold as a homeopathic remedy in health food stores until the Canadian government put a ban on it recently! I was told it is good for helping people get over addiction to alcohol and Tylenol 3's!
The muslims are so strict they recently tried to ban belly dancing in Egypt! Mobs have been burning down taverns where the women dance! Now there is a law in place where she cannot show their bellies!

Drinking alcohol breaks your spiritual communication to your higher power.

Conscious contact with your Spiritual force is paramount. Alcohol drinking is therefore a bad thing, kinda like what Christians call a Sin.

Yes it is a sin so to speak.

FilmmakeMike: I do not believe one or two glasses of wine breaks spiritual communication to your higher power. If anything, you may lose inhibitions and become closer....lol The most important thing in spiritual connection is to love the people around you and create heaven on earth. Christians, which include anyone who believe in Jesus do not believe alcohol is a sin as they serve it at communion and at dinners in their homes as Jesus did!

mr Funn1....its not a case of feeding the hungry, which plenty of Christians do...but getting ya theology and exegesis correct...you tend towards eisegesis, which means to read one's own interpretation into a given text. In general, exegesis presumes an attempt to view the text objectively, while eisegesis is more subjective.

Hey, the general understanding of the passages Ent_Man and I have explained to you are the general consensus of the majority of Christians and theologians. None of what you have posted makes any common sense in both a worldly or spiritual frame. DO you really think that people sat around at a feast or celebration drinking grape juice. I think not, the grape juice would not last anyway, no preseveratives..of course the alcohol in there would keep it from going off..

Yes you use the bible, but distort the meaning..Even a non-beleiver can see through the fallacies you present as "truth". Its best not to be a teacher until you can rightly handle the word of God..

1 Samuel 2:3
Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.

Be careful my friend.

I think they were doing unto one another.. One thinks Jesus drank only grape juice the other says it was wine...I think Oracle made more sense than Funn1..Whats a Christian -other? The only choice you have in the profile. There is not one for just Christian like there is for say Jewish or New Age, but then New Age is all other..

I'll be hated for this one, but here it goes!!!!!!!!!

You can not sin, if mentally you lack the understanding of the sin! There is no way a negative judgement would be brought upon a down syndrome person who drank a beer, or for that matter shot their dad, they WOULD NOT KNOW BETTER. They don't have the capabilities to make decisions based on RIGHT or WRONG. Stay with me! If what you do in your non disabled life is OK in your own eyes, then you don't know any better either, & would not be judged negatively for not knowing. Unfortunately we non disabled have it hard. My body is my temple, & when i drink till drunk, i am hurting my own temple, & I, I AM SINNING! If someone else in the deepest of their soul(spiritually) felt it ok to drink they cannot be held accountable for lack of understanding. As long as you do what your conscience(holy spirit, holy ghost, angel, whatever YOU call it.) truly tells you, it cannot be a sin. I am a drinker, I am a smoker, I am a SINNER. Only because deep down inside my soul, I know it's wrong for ME, it's wrong for ME to drink & smoke. Only you know if it's wrong for you! Just remember, on judgement day(when you judge yourself), you will be facing your creator, you won't be able to lie in his presence, so don't lie to yourself & society now!

P.S. I was raised LDS(mormon), although i am no longer following any specific denomination, a lot of my religious upbringing still leads me, i have strict beliefs for myself. It would have been an easier ride had i been brought up to BELIEVE atheism(barring my holy ghost led me the same). us all!

...

The Original as I understand it is not drinking till drunk, but whether alcohol is a sin. Eating food is not sin, whereas gluttony would be considered a sin..

Some religions believe that drinking alcohol is a sin. Therefore, they use grape juice instead of wine for communion. My former church believes that over consumption of alcohol, or drunkiness is a sin. I believe that frequent drunkiness is a disease, or addiction.

It depends on your point of view. Gluttony is another matter.
