| So why do women find sci-fi unattractive Posted: 4/29/2008 8:20:41 AM |
So I guess my question is, why? I would think that anyone who was an interest in this would be someone who is intelligent, and imaginative. Are those not attractive characteristics?
Personally, I'm a bookworm and scifi is one of my two favorite genres. I also love to watch scifi on tv and in the movies. I am not, however, such a big fan that I've joined StarFleet or attempted to learn to speak a made-up language.
I think most of the old flak (dude, we have our own channel now- scifi is practically mainstream *wink*), is associated with the perceived, extreme dorkiness of being a trekkie. Some people hear "scifi fan" or read that you use a bot metaphor throughout your profile and might be afraid that you can't have a conversation or interest without scifi. Like most have said, it isn't always the interest itself, but the degree to which you are devoted to it.
That said, I hope you don't pull back from it just to look more generically attractive on here. It's you and you want to find someone who's really into you - whether that's because of or inspite of your scifi passion.
Now, to your 2nd question .... People who have interests in scifi are not, no, not inherently intelligent and imaginative. In fact, some might make the argument that scifi provides them with a creative interest because they do not posess a great deal of creativity themselves. I don't necessarily ascribe to that, but while I enjoy talking about certain shows or books with other scifi fans, I don't believe it's a marker of intelligence and creativity to be interested in scifi.
3rd question: Yes, I find intelligence and creativity to be attractive. ;)

| So why do women find sci-fi unattractive Posted: 4/29/2008 8:34:53 AM | Well hopefully a person isn't glued to the TV regardless of what they are watching. :)
There is a certain bit of irony, while my profile has a certain goofy bot theme going, and trully it was meant to be more of a goofy theme, and while I enjoy sci-fi, it certainly isn't the end all be all. I have many other interests, and I'm wondering if maybe my profile doesn't come across as such.
Hmmmm, well anyways this thread isn't about me, but sci-fi in general. I'm glad to see many old generalizations are falling to the wayside!

| So why do women find sci-fi unattractive Posted: 4/29/2008 9:15:03 AM | | Personally i cannot stand Sci-Fi, buttttttt,,,,if i met a man who was into it well then hey,,,whatever floats his boat! Definitely is not a deal breaker. I just dont share that particular interest. On the flip side, im a HUGE horror fan. I dont expect every man i meet to dig it like i do. It happens to be MY interest, and if he likes it too, then all's the better. | |

| So why do women find sci-fi unattractive Posted: 4/29/2008 9:31:09 AM | | think stereotypes - men who enjoy sci fi can tend to be to introverted and awkward with no true connection to the real world and TOO imaginative without a realistic base . This is of course the stereotype and not necessarily the truth but when i see sci fi on interest that is what unconsciously dominates my mind on the impression i get of that person :P | |

| So why do women find sci-fi unattractive Posted: 4/29/2008 10:40:20 AM | | There are a lot of bad tips out there about the opposite sex. And there's always exceptions to every rule. Do you want to have hoards of women, or find one special one? Maybe you'll find your sci-fi she-geek that is the girl of your dreams? They are out there. I've met them. | |

| So why do women find sci-fi unattractive Posted: 4/29/2008 11:01:45 AM | ^^^ How about ten green dancing... bananas (that kind of look like penises)?
I actually think that sci-fi is cool...so, I would not hold it against anyone.

| So why do women find sci-fi unattractive Posted: 4/29/2008 11:08:23 AM | Actually, I find that guys who are into SF tend to be great conversationalists - the "what if" nature of the genre provides for some interesting topics - which is VERY attractive.
Of course, I am a confirmed SF geek myself (note my user name) so I am definitely biased in favour anyone who shares this interest with me.

why do women find sci-fi unattractive
same reason why men don't like being dragged to chick flicks i imagine.
we're all wired differently and what's good for one person isn't for another. there are women out there that do quite enjoy sci-fi. but then there are women like me that have no interest in it what so ever... that doesn't mean i'm going to judge someone for their love of sci-fi... just means it's not my bag.

| So why do women find sci-fi unattractive Posted: 4/29/2008 6:14:47 PM | I actually would find it enlightening to meet a man who is into sci-fi. That is a rare occurence where I'm living right now. I'm a huge book worm and was brought up on sci-fi, but hardly anyones knows I enjoy it. I think it is fun to meet new people with different interests. If we all had the same interests, it would just be boring.
If I had to meet anyone from Star Trek, it would def. be Brent Spiner "Data". Even thought he was andorid, he was sexy as hell. I would program him anyday of the week. One of the few pasty men I find attractive.
I grew up reading, "The Hobbit", "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and many more. These are books that I escaped in and truely enjoyed. I may not come off as a geek, but I'm def. one at heart. Believe me women like us exist, it just may not be written in bold ink.

| So why do women find sci-fi unattractive Posted: 4/29/2008 7:49:24 PM | Not all women...
I am a huge sci-fi fan. When they took the X-Files off the air I no longer had use for TV. It was really the only show I watched. lol
Most of my movie and book collection are Sci-Fi... I also like mystery and horror.

| So why do women find sci-fi unattractive Posted: 4/29/2008 7:51:08 PM | | My ex wife used to have to be home to watch Sliders and the Xfiles. The girlfriend after that used to take the phone off the hook to watch Star Trek TNG every week. | |

| So why do women find sci-fi unattractive Posted: 4/30/2008 10:00:43 AM | | That is so not true OP, I know more then a few women that like sci-fi. I think they my be a little harder to find then guys that like sci-fi but there out there. I myself like NASCAR and to a lot of women on here that puts me out of the running but its all for the best cause I want to find someone that likes me for me not some made up version of me:) Point being don't worry about what everybody says and just keep looking there are plenty of women out there that are into sci-fi. | |

| So why do women find sci-fi unattractive Posted: 4/30/2008 3:53:49 PM | So i really am still uncertain about what exactly is so wrong with someone pursuing their passion? ie...going to a convention in a costume... I mean most of American gets to dress up on holloween...why so wrong with going to a convention in costume? | |

| So why do women find sci-fi unattractive Posted: 5/3/2008 7:24:40 AM | <----Has been to ComicCon and several Sci-fi/Fantasy conventions in her youth....
Watched the original Star Trek until TNG came out... can't watch the original anymore because I finally realized that Captain Kirk's acting really bugged me!
Watched DS9 a lot and wore a Bajoran (sp?) ear cuff for the longest time... ...I have debated the religious symbolism of Babylon5 with my friends.
I am currently back-to-back episode watching season 4 of The X-Files.
I am re-reading Snow Crash for the second time...
<--- *Salivating over the idea of Peter Jackson making The Hobbit! <--- Has gone as an elf for Halloween... I think I donned those same ears at the next Star Trek convention in Pasadena that year. Can't really remember because it WASN'T a big deal for me to put them on.
Off topic: <--- Dresses head-to-toe for Renaissance Faires.
On topic: Yup. Sci-fi is geeky! Ewwww!!!

| So why do women find sci-fi unattractive Posted: 5/3/2008 8:56:16 AM | Not all women find it unattractive. I happen to love the genre myself. A disclaimer, though: If someone starts speaking Klingon or Elvish or anything of the sort to me, that might be taking it a bit too far in my book (and YES - it has happened).
However, I will take a Klingon-speaking, dressing-up-for-conventions-type gentleman any day over one that watches "reality" television.

| So why do women find sci-fi unattractive Posted: 5/3/2008 12:09:21 PM | Oh, yeah... When I went back to school and could finally have a non-business-like out-going message (I was self-employed before), I changed it every other day for a while.
One of them was: "Speak Friend and Enter... What is the Elvish word for Friend?"

| So why do women find sci-fi unattractive Posted: 5/5/2008 6:42:18 PM | | I don't find it unattractive AT ALL. Stargate SG-1 all the way! lol. Seriously though, it's not unattractive unless you wear spok ears and can not get out of the Twilight Zone your all good! | |
