Have to agree with using the hemp seeds, though I've never tried them as an additive for food ... one of the most under - utilized plants on the planet ... if people would move past the fact that hemp is a plant from which marijuana is taken and really utilize it in the many ways it can be used, it would astound people ... and probably put a dent in this downward spiral in our economy ...
I completely agree with this statement. I think society is far behind in utilizing this plant as efficiently as it can be used. In just the past few years it has started to pop up in more mainstream products, although it can still be very difficult to find.
Also am curious about aloe vera juice. Funny you mentioned this. Before i saw your post today i was in the grocery store and saw some aloe vera juice in the ethnic section. I have used the plant for medicinal purposes, but have never thought of ingesting it. Is it all the same or should you look for a certain kind? Does it taste gross on it's own, or is it best suited for things like smoothies? YOur recipe sounds good, just unsure of the av juice....lol. Think i need to google....

| Healthy smoothies Posted: 4/29/2008 8:07:35 PM | I've been on the aloe vera juice for years ... it has a rather bland taste on its own ... when I take it as a stand alone drink, I like to mix it with ginger ale ... 1/2 & 1/2 ... of course, you can play with the mix ... don't know that the brand name really matters ... I buy mine at Sam's Wholesale Club ... about $5 a gallon ... there are many other places at which you can purchase it, though ... I highly recommend it ... it's as good for internal use as for external ...

| Healthy smoothies Posted: 5/1/2008 2:59:06 AM | Fruit juice is too much sugar, eat your fruit. Dont drink it. Sugar is the enemy.
morning smoothie recipe:
1/2 cup of frozen berries, your choice 1 tbsp. ground flaxseed meal 2 scoops vanilla Nitrean (any high quality protein powder will work) water and ice in the blender
evening smoothie: 1 tbsp. natural peanut butter 2 scoops chocolate Nitrean water and ice in the blender
That's it, keep it simple and get some good protein supplements.

| Healthy smoothies Posted: 8/5/2008 11:48:32 AM | Couple of handfuls of frozen mixed fruit
1 banana
1 kiwi fruit
Cranberry Juice
Most wholesale supermarkets sell large bags of mixed frozen fruit, which is an ideal base for cold smoothies, perfect for breakfast!

| Healthy smoothies Posted: 8/7/2008 11:36:28 AM | My favorite recipe is this:
1 cup orange juice 1 banana 1 cup frozen strawberries 1/2 cup frozen blueberries frozen peaches if desired
This is the best since there is no dairy. It is ice cold from the frozen fruit and gives you all your servings of fruit you need each day. You should not combine fruit and dairy together because they digest at different rates. Fruit takes only one hour to digest and proteins take up to 4 hours.
I eat about an hour later a couple of eggs with sauteed broccoli or asparagus in it. Delicious.
Keep it clean and simple. Your body will thank you greatly!

| Healthy smoothies Posted: 8/23/2008 7:38:45 AM | I've been doing smoothies for breakfast. This is such a departure for the norm for me because 1) I use to hate eating breakfast (breakfast foods typically make me nauseous) and 2) I love vegetables but I'm not a big fan of fruit or sweet things...especially very sweet things. However, I love my morning smoothies now and I'm getting more fruit in my diet than ever before.
Unless I am baking, I typically only do rough measures of how I make things. So, the measurements I'm about to give are rough. The following produces roughly 1 serving
1.5 cup frozen fruit 2 huge tablespoons of coconut milk (mmmmmm...so tastey) 1 scoop/serving Protein powder (optional) 1 tbl spoon Honey (another option for those avoiding sugar is White Stevia) *1/4 water
Put everything in the blender except the water and blend. Add water a little at a time to get the consistency you want.
I buy local in season, fresh fruit, cube it, vacuum seal and freeze. Also the 1.5 cups of fruit I use is typically composed of 2 different fruits. I have done a one fruits moothy with peaches and it tasted fantastic especially with the coconut milk. Right now my favorite fruits are cherries, peaches and strawberries. Bananas give the smoother a nice thick texture of course but I'm not a huge fan of bananas.
Coconut milk is excellent for you, especially if you are having weight issues (low or high). I won't babble on about the health benefits. I'm sure you guys have heard of google. Look it up.
The protein powder is optional but I found it gives it a different and in some ways more pleasant texture, taste and consistency. It's also my way of getting protein in first thing in the morning. Some powders get all clumpy and weird if thrown in the blender directly. In that case add the protein powder to the water and then add to the blender
I love putting honey in my shakes however white Stevia is an excellent substitute for honey. A lot of people have never heard of white stevia but it is natural, very nutrient rich and good for you. It is an herb and is perfect for those who for whatever reason are avoiding honey (e.g. vegans, diabetics). White Stevia is 200-300 times more sweet than sugar so go very very easy on this stuff. It is powerful. It also has been reported to reduce cravings for sweet and fatty foods. You really should google white stevia too. The uses and health benefits are crazy wonderful and diverse.
Read the label though if you buy white stevia because some companies cut it with malto-dextrin and other crap. Get the pure stuff and the highest quality you can find.

| My breakfast for the past 10 years... Posted: 8/24/2008 10:10:19 AM | ...well, not EVERY morning. I do go out and indulge in a nice traditional cholesterol-fest breakfast once or twice a month (eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, hash browns, etc.) usually at some greasy spoon. But 95% of the time, I have a banana-oatmeal smoothie.
3 bananas, peeled and broken in halves 1 portion of oatmeal (soak 1lb of raw oats in boiling water, covered, for at least 30 minutes) 1 portion of yogurt (from a 1 quart container) 1.5 cup chocolate soymilk 1 scoop chocolate whey protein
I make 7 servings on Sunday night for the whole week. Each serving will fill a 1-quart reusable Ziploc plastic container (about $3 for 2 at Wallyworld) and will keep for at least 2 weeks in the fridge.
Love being able to drink my breakfast and be out the door in under 5 minutes!

| My breakfast for the past 10 years... Posted: 8/24/2008 10:47:46 AM | a yummy one(won't be great for the "organic types")
8oz carb down chocolate milk one scoop chocolate whey protein powder one frozen banana splenda to taste
(about 250 cals with 18 grams protein) the milk has 5 gms fat. not sure of carb breakdown

| My breakfast for the past 10 years... Posted: 9/3/2008 5:42:28 PM | I've been playing with the ingredients in my smoothies and I've discovered that I actually like bananas more than I thought. I've found if I put in frozen bananas I have no need to put in any sweetners like honey or stevia.
I also like to layer the smoothie in a glass with granola. My son loves this. One layer of granola...one layer of smoothie...one layer granola...etc.

| My breakfast for the past 10 years... Posted: 9/3/2008 6:00:15 PM | | My all time favorite, leftover from childhood, is simply orange juice, an egg, and some vanilla in a blender - it just tastes delicious! But after reading some of the neat smoothies recipes here I think I'll be experimenting! I really like the ones with oatmeal and granola... | |

| My breakfast for the past 10 years... You can mix this into all sorts of smoothies and it will make a very rich drink with low calories. One of my favorites is:
2T PB2 1C Light Vanillia Soy Milk 1 Frozen banana 1tbs vanillia extract (pure) crushed ice

| My breakfast for the past 10 years... Posted: 9/5/2008 7:49:54 AM | | Whey protein(vanilla), low carb milk (1 cup), 2 tablespoons of pine nuts, ice cubes. Carbs 4G, 200 calories, 48g protein. Fills me up, and great right before bed. Sometimes I will add flax seeds or Flaxseed oil, and 3 raw eggs. Depends on how hungry I am. Damn, now I need to go make one..lol | |

| My breakfast for the past 10 years... Posted: 9/7/2008 3:12:13 PM | My morning shakes:
2 Scoops Chocolate Dymatize Elite Whey Protein Half a cup of Quick Oats 1 Banana 1 Tablespoon Natural Peanut Butter 1 Cup Skim Milk 1 Cup Water Ice
Blend until smooth
Most people would want to cut the amounts in half and remove the water from it. Putting oats in a shake isn`t for everyone either so just doing a protein powder, banana, milk and natural peanut butter shake tastes pretty good.

| Healthy smoothies Posted: 11/3/2008 4:49:41 PM | | hi... fruit is best eaten with other fruits vs veggies or animal products, starches etc.. the high sugar content ferments items that need a longer digestion process.. fruit wants to digests in about an hr where milk and other products are no where near as fast... fruits can be combined with greens to make really excellent tasting smoothies which pack a huge mineral boost... acid fruits can be combined with raw nuts for variety and yet the digestion is not compromised... cooked fruit is highly acid forming and it is in a state of acidosis that the body tends to develop ailments... google raw smoothies and or Frederic Patenaude.. his website will send you a raw recipe a day, often smoothies.. blessings, warmly Mona | |

| Healthy smoothies Posted: 11/3/2008 7:23:19 PM | I don't know about the food combining thing, as there are smart people on both sides of that issue.
I find that a great basis for smoothies is the juice of a young coconut. It's non dairy and has many health benefits which you can research. A suggestion:
Juice of one young coconut 1 thick slice of fresh pineapple, cored and trimmed 1 cup of goat's milk yogurt 1 scoop protein powder
If your ingredients are chilled, there's no need for ice, and it's sweet enough to not need sweetener. Even the food combining crowd should warm to the lauric acid in the coconut, enzymes in the pineapple and probiotics in the yogurt helping to break down and digest the protein powder. It's like a healthy piƱa colada.
Avocado smoothies w/powdered greens are a great alternate to this. I sweeten them with Stevia, and they're delicious and filling.

| Healthy smoothies Posted: 12/1/2008 5:55:27 PM | I had weight loss surgery (lap band) about 11 months ago. The restriction in the morning makes it difficult for me to eat first thing. So, I started making smoothies (better than drinking Boost or Carnation Instant Breakfast). I basically use:
frozen fruit (about 1/2 cup) 1/2 cup of yogurt Crystal Light Sunrise (saves on the extra calories of orange juice; I use other flavors based on the fruit I'm using) 3 scoops of Soy Protein Powder Splenda and Vanilla to taste
This works great for me as I get about half my protein requirements (30 grams) in one meal. I'm also covering my fruit and calcium requirements too.

| Healthy smoothies Posted: 12/1/2008 8:47:55 PM | Lots of great suggestions. Throw in some real chocolate. Cacao Beans.....they're an excellent anti-oxidant. I don't love the taste so I can only down a "chocolate" smoothie with bananas & vanilla yogurt.
My all time favorite smoothie remains:
Coconut Milk (you can freeze this in an ice cube tray the night befor)-2 cubes 1/2 Banana Pineapple juice (1 cup)
It's like drinking a Pina Colada first thing in the morning ;)

| Healthy smoothies Posted: 12/2/2008 3:00:52 AM | Quick and easy smoothie.
225 ml Plain Yoghurt 130 ml Milk 130 ml Can of Mango Pieces 4 Teaspoons of Sugar (optional)
Drain the syrup juice from the can of mango and add the fruit and all other ingredients into a food processor. You can add some ice cubes before you blend everything if you want to cool down quickly after the gym.

Damn that sounds good!
Can you use other flavored juices as well as OJ? I've been using milk in my smoothies and did not realize about the digesting rates. Since I routinely keep Bananorange juice and that 5Alive pomegranate flavored juice on hand, I wondered if I could incorporate those into my smoothies.
