Pentagon Study? Current Events in Iraq? Not so Fast...
SWJ Editors Note: Unfortunately this is not the first instance - nor will it be the last – of highly selective use of source quotes and excerpts as well as distortion of context by members of the “mainstream media” in reporting on recent events and trends in Iraq…

JOINT STUDY WITH ISD AT GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY
The Academy's joint project with the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy at Georgetown is nearing completion, following the fourth in a series of working dinners discussing the question of "Coalition Creation and Maintenance". The project is co chaired by Lee Hamilton and Hans Binnendijk, the latter of the National Defense University, and has been studying coalition experiences in the Gulf War, Kosovo, Afghanistan and the War on Terrorism. The project director is Andrew J. Pierre of the Institute. A final report and recommendations are planned for later this fall, with a public presentation and conference at Georgetown on November 20. http://www.academyofdiplomacy.org/publications/newsletter_archive/newsletter_issue_55.html .

Your link is from 2002... and why am I getting the feeling that the Academy is made up of a bunch of liberal think tanks... maybe I've just become so jaded by liberals in academia.

Where did this liberal tag that Americans use come from? The term "Liberal" has evolved through the years, previously to my knowledge Liberals were tolerant of other opinions, free thinkers yet not extremists in their views.. since the end of the Clinton Era I've noticed a huge shift to the left of the fiscally conservative Democrats, more socialized thinking, anti-Goverment, anti-establishment.. I miss the days of old fiscally conservative Democrats.

he retarded Bushbots are still in denial about the Moron King's abyssmal foreign policy. If you are that stupid and/or willfully ignorant, you are not smart enough to vote. Hell, you're not smart enough to reproduce. Do the world a favour. Sterilize yourself.
You said it brother. We can only hope.
Of course Jesse was right. Wake up. Look around you.
I still totally, totally think he's wrong about the Terrorists winning but that's just my opinion/perception.
You THINK? Based upon WHAT? You OPINION? Based upon WHAT? What about the FACTS that are all over the place smacking you in the face? Good grief. How can you be in such utter denial. Look at what 9/11 turned this country into. Illegal search and seizure? No problem. No more habeus corpus? Bogus military trials with no legal representation? No problem. Having the ability to spy on each and every American's phone calls and emails without probabe cause and without a warrant then having the balls to request total immunity for that little intrusion? No problem.
If nothing about it was illegal, why the hell ask for immunity? Piss away billions of dollars on an unwinnable (yes unwinnable and you can quote me on that) "war" in Iraq costing the lives of over 4000 American men an women? No problem. Getting on a plane these days requiring security (that doesn't even work half the time) reminiscent of a prison standdown? No problem. Permanent bases in the middle east further pissing off every Muslim on the globe thus creating MORE terrorists and not less which, of course is why 9/11 happened to begin with? No problem.
WTF are you thinking? BinLaden has brought this country to it's economic knees. While terrorists continue their suicide attacks, the rest of the Arab world is screwing us in the pocket book with their incestuous need for cash to build bigger highrises in Dubai. Oh, have you seen what our oil dollars are building over there these days? It makes Las Vegas look like your neighborhood kiddie park.
"In Germany, they came first for the Communists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist; And then they came for the trade unionists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist; And then they came for the Jews, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew; And then . . . they came for me . . . And by that time there was no one left to speak up."
Pastor Martin Niemöller
You got that story straight.
America - love it or leave it my ass. I'd love to meet some nitwit who spews that nonsense in REAL LIFE to my face. But no. They spew their anti-American gibberrish from behind the safety of their computer screen where it's completely safe to unleash their bile. This gene pool clearly needs some industrial strength chlorine.
The term "Liberal" has evolved through the years,
Yes indeed it has. Thanks to the "compassionate" conservatives (pardon me while I puke), the term has been made into a pejorative on par with calling a black man a n****r.

Sadly, it took a catastrophic event in 2001 to finally give us some counter-terrorism tools which are working btw.. hopefully the next administration doesn't screw things up by slashing everything that has been working to prevent another attack.. I would much rather have a few feathers ruffled in order to save thousands of innocent lives.. that's what is so wonderful about this country there are those of us who will sacrifice a little to save lives of thousands.

| Jesse Ventura; The Terrorists Are Winning! Posted: 5/7/2008 9:37:38 PM | | 18,000 Americans die EVERY year, six times as many as on 9/11, because they lack health insurance. Terrorism is NOT a real threat, never was. We had warnings, if we had a competent administration, we would likely have prevented 9/11 and 3 Trillion in wasted money and an additional 4,00 of our nation's finest! | |

I would much rather have a few feathers ruffled in order to save thousands of innocent lives... I guess ruffled feathers is your euphemism for loss of constitutional protections of liberty? Terrorism has existed long before the USA has. You have allowed a fear out of proportion with the given threat to make you lose some of the highest ideals this nation was founded upon. That is truly saddening.

finally give us some counter-terrorism tools which are working btw WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The FBI is guilty of "serious misuse" of the power to secretly obtain private information under the Patriot Act, a government audit said Friday.
The Justice Department's inspector general looked at the FBI's use of national security letters, in which agents demand personal and business information about individuals -- such as financial, phone, and Internet records -- without court orders.
The audit found the letters were issued without proper authority, cited incorrect statutes or obtained information they weren't supposed to.
As many as 22 percent of national security letters were not recorded, the audit said.
"We concluded that many of the problems we identified constituted serious misuse of the FBI's national security letter authorities," Inspector General Glenn A. Fine said in the report.
The audit said there were no indications that the FBI's use of the letters "constituted criminal misconduct."
The audit sparked a new stage in the ongoing battle over the Patriot Act, which was put into place after the September 11 attacks. Critics have slammed some of its provisions for intruding on civil liberties. The American Civil Liberties Union called on Congress to "act immediately to repeal these dangerous Patriot Act provisions."
The FBI has made as many as 56,000 requests a year for information using the letters since the Patriot Act was passed in October 2001, the audit found.
A single letter can contain multiple information requests, and multiple letters may target one individual.
The audit found that in 2004 and 2005, more than half of the targets of the national security letters were U.S. citizens.
Ruffling a few feather's?The very freedom's this country is founded upon is slowly being bled dry!
Posted: May 7, 2003 at 6:18 p.m. OAKLAND (KRON) -- Some teachers in Oakland are rallying behind two students who were interrogated by the Secret Service. That followed remarks the teenagers made about the President during a class discussion. The incident has many people angry.
For years the classroom has been the setting for the free expression of ideas, but two weeks ago certain ideas led to two students being taken out of class and grilled by the United States Secret Service.
It happened at Oakland High. The discussion was about the war in Iraq. That's when two students made comments about the President of the United States. While the exact wording is up for debate, the teacher didn't consider it mere criticism, but a direct threat and she called the Secret Service.
Teacher Cassie Lopez says, "They were so shaken up and afraid."
Now, other teachers are coming to the aid of the two students and crying foul.
"I would start with the teacher, she made a poor judgement," Lopez says.
Teacher Larry Felson says, "What we're concerned about is academic freedom and that students have the right to free expression in the classroom."
Even worse, they say, is the fact that the students were grilled by federal agents without legal counsel or their parents present, just the principal.
"When one of the students asked, 'do we have to talk now? Can we be silent? Can we get legal council?' they were told, 'we own you, you don't have any legal rights,'" Felson says.
"We don't want federal agents or police coming in our schools and interrogating our children at the whim of someone who has a hunch something might be wrong," Lopez says.
The union representing Oakland teachers requires that students be afforded legal counsel and parental guidance before they're interrogated by authorities. It's too late for the two involved in this incident, and teachers say it's something they'll carry with them for years.
"I tell you the looks on those childrens faces. I don't know if they'll say anything about anything ever again. Is that what we want? I don't think we want that," says Lopez.
Free speech?

| Jesse Ventura; The Terrorists Are Winning! Posted: 5/7/2008 10:20:20 PM | Another "good one"Boy investigated by FBI for researching school paper on Chesapeake Bay Bridge
Baltimore Sun
WELL, WE live in nervous times.
The terrorists arrive that awful Sept. 11 morning, and the nation spends the past two years trying to cope. The government investigates shadowy places where it never previously stuck its nose, and the civil libertarians shudder. Is Big Brother getting too snoopy? A 12-year-old kid at Boys' Latin researches a paper on the Bay Bridge, and suddenly the FBI's Joint Terrorist Task Force shows up in the headmaster's office.
You could laugh if you didn't know the jangled nerves that set off such a reaction.
This fall, Dorsey Boyle, a middle-school teacher at Boys' Latin, the venerable Lake Avenue private school, assigned his classes a series of research papers. The first, on some famous individual. Seventh-grader John McLean picked Abner Doubleday, the baseball legend. The second, on some famous structure. McLean picked the Bay Bridge.
"He went to the Internet to research as much as he could," Bruce McLean, John's dad, was saying last week. He laughed a little ruefully. "He wanted to know how it was built and financed, how much concrete and steel went into it. But he was having trouble getting information. So Mr. Boyle told him a couple of Web sites where he could ask questions."
One was a Bay Bridge Web site. The other, the Maryland Transportation Authority's.
Several days later, John's mom, Rosemary McLean, arrived at Boys' Latin at the end of the school day. Boyle spotted her on the parking lot.
"You're John McLean's mother, right?" he said.
"Yes."
"The infamous John McLean?" he asked. The words were a little surprising, but Boyle had a twinkle in his eye. "Are you here because of what happened?"
John plays on the seventh-grade football team. His mother thought maybe he'd been hurt at practice that day.
"I'm just here to pick him up," she said. "What's happened? What's he been doing?"
Just writing a little paper about a bridge, that's all - and getting red-flagged by the government because of the questions he was asking.
When the McLeans talked about it that evening, they still had very little information. As it happens, John McLean shares a name (though not the same spelling) with the Bruce Willis character in the terrorist movie Die Hard. Did some FBI investigator stumble into this and think it was a terrorist's taunting alias?
As it also happens, Bruce McLean, who works for Mercantile Trust, coaches baseball. "I put the kids through a pretty good regimen," he says. "I go back to the old Oriole way." Discipline, hard work. A friend, photographer Harry Connolly, gave Bruce McLean a nickname, which has been used in light-hearted e-mail messages: Saddam. Did the FBI add that comic moniker to their list of suspicions?
"But the truth is," says Bruce McLean, "we were laughing about the whole thing. In fact, I said to John, 'I have to talk to you.' He said, 'What did I do wrong?' I said, 'I want you to be perfectly honest with me, son. Do you know where Osama bin Laden is?' We made it a whole joke. Because you have to laugh at it."
In an uptight time, laughter helps.
When the Boys' Latin middle school headmaster, Rick Brocato, went to school the previous morning, he had an unexpected visitor: Jim Drotar of the FBI's Joint Terrorist Task Force.
"We need verification," Drotar said. "About someone who claims he's a student here. It's about the Chesapeake Bay Bridge."
Brocato, relaxing on a couch in his office the other day, laughed about it. "I knew some of the boys were investigating bridges," he said. "The FBI had initials, but not a name. The initials were J.M." (The FBI had no tie-in to the Bruce Willis character, or any "Saddam" suspicions.)
"Somewhere in his questioning," said Brocato, "John had mentioned Boys' Latin. And the FBI guy said, 'All I need to know is, is he a student here?' He said terrorists can impersonate people to get information. I assured him John McLean was a student, and he was doing a paper on the bridge. He said, 'You need to know, students need to identify themselves.' They're very sensitive about bridges and tunnels."
All of this leaves one question: How did the FBI stumble onto the information? Are there agents who spend their days monitoring millions of private messages?
"In today's environment," says Baltimore FBI spokesman Barry Maddox, "we take all leads very seriously. We had to make sure this was a legitimate school project. The kinds of questions he was asking about the bridge, we have to have a sense of caution.
"But, no, we don't sit around monitoring e-mails. This was based on a referral from the Transportation Authority. They're the ones who red-flagged it, based on the questions they were getting. We followed up. We have enough work without checking e-mails."
In a nervous time, the mistaken identity's merely a rueful little laugh.

| Jesse Ventura; The Terrorists Are Winning! Posted: 5/8/2008 2:20:05 AM | Fear is the sickness that has overtaken this nation with the absurd results illustrated in the bridge story. It's absolute insanity. But the administration dishes out its regular portion of fear whenever it needs a smokescreen for something else it's doing in the background. That will all end in November if we can just survive it.
And they say BinLaden isn't winning. Whew. Talk about denial.
|
| Jesse Ventura; The Terrorists Are Winning! Posted: 5/8/2008 4:51:58 AM |
That will all end in November if we can just survive it. It may change its shoes after the election, but you're dreaming if you think it will end any time soon. It will probably get worse, before it gets better. If it gets better. Ventura is wrong - the 'terrorists' aren't winning ...they won. The American economy is stuck down the crapper, and there is no plunger in sight. Our way of life has been forever altered. Our society has been changed. Rights and freedoms once enjoyed are going, going and gone. To borrow a phrase from your leader: 'Mission Accomplished'.
|
| |
| Jesse Ventura; The Terrorists Are Winning! Posted: 5/8/2008 5:56:26 AM | | One such plunger would be impeachment. Both theP and VP have done far more serious offenses than Clinton ever did. . . But,for some reason the Ds in power have lacked the spine to use it! Oh well, at least we are approaching the end of this error. | |
|
| Jesse Ventura; The Terrorists Are Winning! Posted: 5/8/2008 1:50:38 PM | | Agreed. They just don't have the stomach for it. But even if they did, they'd be accused of "politics". Sometimes you just can't win for losing. But I'd amend the constitution to include "gross incompetence" as grounds for impeachment. Bush would be the book definition. | |
|
| Jesse Ventura; The Terrorists Are Winning! Posted: 5/8/2008 2:31:26 PM | . I would amend the constitution to include a 4th branch, one of the people at a county level so we know where they live. Wanna see the proverbial shit hit the fan?
Katrina was a litmus test and rehearsal for taking away the guns, weavers,(mother and kid), waco,(several mothers and kids and men), murrah, (even more mothers kids and men), were the litmus test for 911, 3000 people. All litmus escalating tests to bring the people closer to begging for governemnt protection and of course to accomplish that we need martial law and a totalitarian police state.
Todays test is the unconstitutional search and seizure by alabama, tennessee, and arkansas, called operation sudden impact.
The present militarization of our police, the use of private armies, the establishment of the american gestapo, HLS, and the institution of th epatriot act which the government gave themselves the authority to "pre-emptively" determine crime. In other words guilty until proven innocent and no tools in law to prove yourself innocent, you just go along for the ride till THEY say its over or whatever___________ fill in th efuture blank.
Where is the Citizen Militia when you need them eh? (oh thats right we felt they were no longer needed)
If the day should EVER come that we give up our arms this country will fall in less than one term.
Needless to say the terrorists are winning since we are giving up our freedoms and begging for it no less. .
|
| Jesse Ventura; The Terrorists Are Winning! Posted: 5/8/2008 4:22:00 PM | Wow... they are really quickly gearing up for this...
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) along with other government institutions are currently conducting an 8-day anti-terror and disaster exercise from May 1st through May 8th called National Level Exercise 2-08 in the United States.
According to the press releases from both FEMA and U.S. Northern Command, drills are slated to take place in Oregon, Washington State and in the Washington DC or mid-Atlantic area.
And a bit more secretively.
Reports from the Des Moines Register and the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier indicating that a FEMA exercise is taking place in Waterloo, Iowa. According to these reports, the federal government has leased out the entire National Cattle Congress fairgrounds until May 25th for an exercise.
Apparently even the Governor doesn't know about it...?
|
| |
| Jesse Ventura; The Terrorists Are Winning! Posted: 5/10/2008 2:59:32 PM | . Since they monitor everything we do, what they need to see is a HUGE surge in the purchase of weapons everytime they pull this crap. Not like we need to many more since there are already 290 million "known" personally owned weapons in the hands of civilians right this moment.
Thats only the known weapons! LOL
If they ever take the weapons away from a large group the declaration of independence authorizes civilians and in fact makes it our duty to protect our constitution from the despots.
Of course we cannot protect it from people who are idiots and willingly hand them over.
Katrina was a limus test for weapons confiscation and they pissed literally everyone off over that one.
Not to fear though they will do it again in a few years . It always begs the question however; just where is that line? .

| Jesse Ventura; The Terrorists Are Winning! Posted: 5/10/2008 5:56:29 PM |
I believe that the terrorists are losing. In fact they lost the minute those planes hit the Twin Towers. The greatest nation the world has ever known then made it their business to ensure that they loose. HUH?
WHAT terrorists you're talking about is debatable since nothing has been proven to the public asking questions. As if ruled by despots, people who question ANYTHING are ignored, silenced or written off as "crazies" by the ever trustworthy media and those who couldn't muster a friggin counter-thought if their own lives depended on it. "The great nation the world has ever known", has lost it's credibility and respect and is becoming more suspect of self-serving interests. OCCUPATION.
The only thing that's winning here is the "ideology " perpetrated by our leaders who insist we send our boys to die fighting invisible terrorists. WHY are we in IRAQ if the so called terrorists who manned the planes .. uh .. were Saudis? Where is Osama Bin Laden? (dead or partying it up with the rich corporate cats in Dubay maybe). Maybe we need to take a good. long look at what's going wrong within our own borders.
