I think looking for what good any living thing is isn't fruitful - living things exist because they fill a niche and if something better suited to fill that niche comes along, they'd better find another niche. As for mosquitoes inoculating us to diseases, most diseases can't live within a mosquito, one that can malaria, kills more people than any other communicable disease on the planet.

I have also heard that they have tried to cure cancer victims by creating Malaria in them. Don't quote me on this but it was tried as an alternative treatment for some terminal cases in Mexico or something. I agree cowboy, that more harm "seems" to have been caused by mosquito bites. Maybe, however, they were trying to unwittingly drive us out of the suez canal for instance to save the rain forests??? I think you get the idea. Every thing is here for some reason or another. This is why it is sad to see anything go extinct. It may have been the animal, insect or plant that held the clue to cure some dreaded disease like AIDS or something..

You see quietcowboy, you actually agree with what I stated a while back that the Earth may not be moving at all. It may in fact be the center of the entire cosmos. The experts would never agree because it would mean that all their fancy titles and accolades were all for nothing. but this is not the case at all. Where do you think someone like Stephen Hawkins comes from. He is just a thinker that has a very good education to back (or on the other hand, distort) his way of thinking. Having a blank mind as I am often accused of having can be of some use. I can look at things from a different perspective not already knowing the answers. Wouldn't it be interesting if all our minds were wiped clean of all astronomy, math, theories etc.and we had to start from scratch and then see if the outcome was the same. Just like that fellow that lives near me in Florida said when I asked him how can he live without light(has no electricity). He said without hesitation"Because its free." And it is free. If you don't mind going into your house(cave) when it gets dark and staying there until it gets light. Another fellow told me the blackberries were now ripe for the pickings in the swamps and fields. I already knew it but I asked him how he knew. Without hesitation he said because the yellow flies are out. (Big horse flies to me, and nice big juicy blackberries). My whole point here is what Einstein said about there being a genius in us all. We just have to find it. And we have to think like a child. Daniel

We are entirely singular beings and no matter how close we can be to one another, we know only what our senses tell us about eachother. I can't sense people when they're far away with my natural abilities.

Do we have any idea how much our commonly used waves would be distorted over x amount of light years? Would there be any distortion at all?

Although the chances of our specific form of life happenning is quite small, the chance of some life forming somewhere is guaranteed (law of large numbers) -- Liken it to winning the lottery, eventually somebody somewhere will hit the winning combination.

The real wrench to your post is the issue of time. We have only been listening for beacons for less than a century, so we are listening for civilizations that might have developed radio technology exactly 'x' millions of years ago (time it takes for the radio waves to hit us.) Assume, if you will, the sheer probability of us receiving those transmissions at the precise moment in our respective developments is about 10mil to 1 (100 years of observation : 1bil years of proposed civilization anywhere.) Just like the lottery, it can be done -- but we gotta get real lucky.

Without a knowing how life began, I think any odds someone puts on the likely hood of it occurring more than once is a wild arse guess. In a lottery with long odds sometimes there is one winner and sometimes there are multiple winners. Which drawing is life a part of?

Hymn KaptDan on your wrap up there.
I've only just picked up on this thread, so forgive me for echoing past points...
On the subject of the Heavens...the big bang theory makes sense to me, for the following reasons: Whats happening now, is a combination of kinetic energy (as a result of the aftermath of the BB)... and mass attraction/centrifugal force (example the solar system dynamics)...when it comes to the inevitable collapse/contraction, this will be so because all the kinetic energy is used up...a LOT of energy folks!..a LONG long time...
On the subject of survival, Extra-terrestial style...My firm view is that, we have evolved to this planet, with all ins uniqueness...its just too hostile for our fragile bodies, out of atmosphere ; As much as we try to protect ourselves, we will come a cropper sooner, rather than later!...This dudes gunner wait for the next asteriod!

Went camping last week KaptDan. I think the midges were trying to eat me alive, so I was arguing with the Wife...She says its an allergic reaction...I say No, its the critters nasty things they are injecting (or dirty teeth) What do you think?

so far, we are!! unless we (the ppl) happen to catch one of these/ aliens.
it is not proven by science, through , earth. that has been announced publically.

altho it is very possible, there cld very well be "other life-forms"
remember in the (1930's?) was it. when the airwaves put on the marshans are coming?? and every-one freaked-out.

the roswell incident, regarding the captivity of these aliens, cld be why, we are left, in-the-dark./ for now, anyways. the 1930's scared/ BIG TIME!!

First of all midges don't bite. You were being bitten by the no-see-ums that are not unlike crabs. They have showers and always remember--A little blue ointment is the crab's disappointment. The Big Bang theory if you consider that the Earth was the center of the bang and is not moving at all. Every thing else is moving around Earth. Even Quiet Kowboy agreed with me on this. Evolution is cool also as long as you understand that Divine Intervention explains the missing link.

Everything IS moving away from the earth, but at different relative velocities -- therefore the earth cannot possibly be the center if one assumes that the universe is expanding uniformly. (think of a wheel -- if we are the hub, everything will move away from us at the same rate -- if we are on a spoke, things on the opposite side of the hub will move away faster than things on our side....)

OK KaptDan'

I accept what you say about the midges...
On the subject of the BB...GUYS!!!...Everything (ALL MASS) is moving away from the VERY POINT of BB ........To Quote A Metaphor...
"We are a piece of shit flying off a stick of dynamite...after the Explosion! We are not at the centre! everything that is around us is company..OK we are a special piece of shit ...But; A flying piece of shit we are!

..."We are the Centre"

The universe is infinate, we would be too egotistical to think that we are alone... perhaps you are not looking in the right dimension?

The universe could be an expanding globule in a massive double helix for all I know.

Are we alone in the universe? The available anecdotal evidence suggests otherwise. Radio waves? My information suggest they rely heavily on mental telepathy. They don't need radio waves. I wouldn't wait for radio signals all that long :). If you want to know what our government is hiding about E.T.s do what I did. Do an FOIA request to all security elements of our government. You will get back (literally) reams of paper and 80% of it is blacked out. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what that means.

yes and no....

individually, each person is alone because each person lives in a single area of space and time at any single moment.
hence each are responsible for their own choices and lives.

however collectively, we share a larger space and a larger period of time.
hence we are effected by each others actions, sometimes negatively, such as contributing to the green house effect, or sometimes positively, etc.
hence every action by one affects others.

Post #30 sums up part of what I think might be the answer. In part:

SETI (and the Drake Equation), is challenged by an idea called the Fermi Paradox.

The Fermi Paradox is the apparent contradiction between the high probability of ET's existence and the lack of contact with them. If they exist, where are they? Enrico Fermi assumed the existence of only one ET civilization capable of interstellar travel (at a speed lower than the speed of light). He assumed that this civilization would be interested in the conquest of the Galaxy and that it progressed by jumps, colonizing a planet during a few hundred or thousands years, then sending tens of vessels towards new conquests. Those new colonists wait another few hundred years, and send out their own dozen or so ships out to the next nearest systems to colonize. The problem is that after only a few million years, the whole of the Galaxy is colonized and under the influence of this extraterrestrial civilization (the low rate of travel being largely compensated by the exponential increase of the vessels number). Simulations of an expansion show that it is possible for one civilization to colonize the whole galaxy in about 10 million years, a short time compared to the age of the Galaxy (10-15 billion years old). If that's all it takes, it would be easy to do at least 500 times.

The first civilization inclined to do so, would have, given the age of the galaxy, long before the beginnings of life on Earth. You'd of thought they'd of claimed this planet before humans ever evolved - seems like a nice enough planet to live on. Well, I mean, it was, until we all showed up.

I think it would be naive to say that there is nothing out there, because there is so much out there. But, I think it's become clear that we're all we've got in our little corner of the universe. So, why are we wasting time and valuable fuel exploring places like Mars? I guess it's because it's there and because we can.

Everything in steps. When the first sea going rafts were built, did anyone try to cross an ocean? We have to learn how to traven in space. Secondly, Mars is a place that we can actually land people and colonize (potentially). It has the best atmosphere, temperature, gravity, distance to relative to us, etc. Studying Mars will result in a tremendous amount of knowledge.

Are we alone in space and time? I don't think so. I tend to think that life is abundant throughout the universe. Saying that, life in other places may have flowered into things beyond our wildest dreams, but I think it's out there. I like to think that the whole universe is "seeded" with life, it just needs the right conditions to sprout. Of course I could be wrong. ;)

I once heard that if aliens were to pick up our signals, they'd be receiving our older stuff first, like the "Lucy and Desi Show". Hmm, can you imagine what they'd perceive our society to be like based on the "Honeymooners"???

Anyway, as has been pointed out, even if we could hear from them, the signal would be thousands if not millions of years old. Considering the fact that looking up at the stars is really looking back in time (seeing as the stars we are looking at could very well be dead since it would take thousands of years for the light from most stars to reach us), even if we did pick up an alien transmission, chances are it's so old as to be archaic and useless, or that alien society is long extinct.

Plus you have the very real problem of intergalactic travel. Even if you could travel at the speed of light (which is impossible according to most physicists), it would take thousands of years just to reach the nearest solar system.

I'm a reformed Trekkie (guilty), so I'm well aware of the idea of warping space, etc. But I think we ought to worry about our own planet, here and now, rather than waiting on Mr. Spock to turn up and beam us off this rock.
