Question about lawn mowers...

no need to spend a fortune on a lawn mover, just run to k-mart or wal-mart and get one with about 4 horses. i think they are around $150. for about $50 more you can get a self propelled, and a mulching blade, add about $20.

I got mine at Sears and it has a Honda motor. Starts on one pull and self propelled. I have actually done burn outs because it takes off so fast.. lol

One thing I will note that my lawn motor mechanic told me is....... Replace your gas in your can every 30 days. Never let it go longer.. the gas gets old from oxidation and ruins your motor. You can dump the gas in your car because your car will use it up right away.

Question about lawn mowers...

I have diligently avoided lawn mowing since I graduated High School when it was my job around the neighborhood.
I can't believe back then, I used to get 50 cents to mow a lawn !
Absolutely, self propelled is the way to go.

Here's a trick.
If you've got a big open space of lawn you can get the self propelled mower to do it by itself.
Take 3 or 4 stakes and a long piece of rope.
Drive the stakes close together, into the ground in the middle of the open space. Attach one end of the rope to one of the stakes and the other to the lawn mower on one side of the lawn. Now, start the mower and stand back and watch it go round and round as the rope winds around the stakes. You stand and watch and the mower cuts the grass by itself.
Naturally, you don't leave it unattended.
My parents hated it when I did that, they thought I was somehow cheating.

Smart-blonde and Yevgeny you guys are right on about the old gasoline! I had never even really thought about that until last winter when I couldn't get the snow blower started and one of the guys at work told me to put fresh gas in it. What a difference it made!

Last night I finished cutting the front yard. I got the thing started finally but for some reason it seemed to be running really fast and the whole thing was vibrating so much I think I bruised my hands just holding the handle. I have no idea why it was shaking so much and then as I was pushing it the screw came off the handle so it kept folding down when I tried to push it!

I can only imagine what my neighbors must think when they see me out there!
I'm going to try to go to Sears and probably Walmart next weekend to see what they have and hopefully I won't have to try to cut it again before I get a new one!

Nipoleon.....I can just see it now. I would try your advice, the stake would break, and all of a sudden I would have an out of control lawn mower that I would have to chase around the yard lol..

Don't forget to look at John Deere....you can even finace through your local dealer and then can make a choice from either the self propell or rider and contrary to what some may say same price that they sell them for at Lowes or Home Depot . Yes I work for John Deere Lol but love our product ... Good luck alwaysme2

Sears has always offered a quality mower ~ It could be several brands but made exclusivly for Sears ~ You get a quality product, service after the sale ~ parts back up for years ~ good warranty ~ and credit options ~ never buy the best and never buy the cheapest.

There are many good brands ~ Toro, lawnboy , John Deer and there is many others as well.

for a lady ~ 20 to 22 inch would be my suggestion ~ they get heavier after that, even if they pull themself ~ It's alot to handle. ~ 20 " it the strongest of the two usally ~ the blade in shorter and stiffer ~ and offers the same HP engine ~ making it a mowing mama ~ jamama ~ but you are 2'' short each pass. So 10 passes you are short one pass but not a winded. something to consider ,

hope it helped ~ dance

and always store the mower with a full tank to cut down on condensation in the tank, a little water in the float bowl means it usually won't start. if you go for a self propelled make sure you check how it engages, I have a great mower but the self propelled part is a handle you have to squeeze and hold...it will wear your hand out! my old craftsman had one you engaged and it stayed engaged until you let go of the deadman that kept it running...

Sheep make great natural lawn mowers too. Or you could just do what I do and pour gasoline on the grass and then burn it every few months.

I do want a gas one and the one I have now is a mulcher type. It's just so hard to start and push! I have a few little hills that I have to go up and down.

ok hon, I would get a Honda self propelled type with a mulching blade. One pull, one start every time, stay away from Briggs and Stratton unless you want a frozen shoulder!

sheep and goats mow a little too close ~ horses , mule and ass are best ~ if you want to keep grass. ~

Just Jim ~right ~ the Honda motor is nice ~ little more advanced design ~ quiter ~ easy pull start ~ strong ~ smooth running ~ dependable. dance

Self propelled mowers are a little more expensive, but definately worth the investment. SInce you have hills and a decent size yard you should probably get a rear wheel drive mower, it will make it easier to manuver over the hills. Electric start is nice, but is often way more expensive. Most mowers will be fairly easy to start, and guarantee to start within a few pulls. Honda and Cub Cadet have nice features to them. If you don't like ot bag Hondas offer a dual blade system which cuts the grass into a finer mulch. Cadets are easy to use and less costly. You should be able to get a rear wheel drive self propelled for under 300 bucks. Toros have nice features, but often don't last as long anymore. The best thing to look for is gunna be something that is comfortable for you to use, they all are similar but have different ways of going about things. Honda has two different styles of how the self propel works, as does toro, you're probably just gunna have to test them out at the stores and see which one feels more comfortable.

Your mower might just need a spring tune-up:
clean gas; oil change; new spark plug; sharpened blades; clean rusty spots and conectors, etc.
My Sears model has been serving me fine for 8 years, but it never hurts to check with Consumer Reports.
Lawn mowers always go on sale for Father's Day.

PS. Maybe avoid it altogether and hire a neighbourhood kid to do it for you.

PPS. Let the neighbourhood kids and dogs play on it, you won't have any grass left to worry about.

Blimey ! I'm amazed no one has pointed out the obvious ! This is clearly a very cleverly disguised code between women here. Surely it's obvious that the thing to do is spend the money on hair, nails and clothes, then find a man and have him cut the lawn?

Gentlemen Landscapers: If you need any more evidence, look here,

And girls if you have one that you use and like ...please let me know!

It's a conspiracy to swap men and their power tools !

You want a Briggs & Stratton 4-cycle engine.

Sears carries a few decent self-propelled mowers in the $300 to $400 range.

DO NOT get the optional added warrantee... its a rip-off. Just change the oil once a year ... keep it out of the rain and the mower should be fine for 10 years. (the spark plug might need to be changed once in 10 years...)

Put a little "StaBil" in the gas if its going to sit for more than a month.

Whoo hooo!

I didn't get the extended warranty but I made sure that he told me everything I needed to do to in order to keep in run smoothly and in tip-top shape.

Here is the info on it......It's a craftsman from Sears....

Sorry to let you down checkinearly. A lot of women will get their hair and nails done and STILL cut their own grass ;)

Although the swapping men and power tools might not be a bad idea! I remember not to long ago I saw in ad in the paper that said.." I will rent you my husband for a weekend to do all of your handyman services" lol...I almost called this women to ask if I could rent him to paint my kitchen, clean out the garage and change the burnt out fluorescent lights in my basement !

Not a bad marketing idea on their part if you ask me! The name of the company was "The husband and Wife handyman service"

I have a self-propelled mower, and a self-propelled vacuum. What a country!

Got the mower from a guy that repairs them. Worked just fine for several years, but now the lever is broke, so it doesn't self-propel. Probably a cheap fix, but I can use the exercise.

you want at least a 5 hp motor, briggs engine if possible, i like troybuilt, or even a yard machine from walmart is a good bet if price is issue, self proppelled and can get mulcher blade for any mower they sell, as far as gas goes, i have seen posts to keep tank full, to cut down on condensation, ok,, but the average yard will use about 1/2 to 3/4 tank, you can refill it, or run it totally out even better for storage, long term over winter, use a product called stabil, it keeps the gas good for use over the winter and helps protect the engine.

Hmmm....
goat, sheep, mule, ass, horse...

Hey, I used to have an ass mow my lawn!!! Yes, worked fairly well, except he was such an idiot every time he'd mow over an old shoe or rope or whatever he could find to tangle up in the blades....

Of course, I'm divorcing the ass.

Maybe I'll try a goat next time!

Toys are more fun when shared

Absolutely - except for power tools - I don't share those well.

I've got about 2 1/2 acreas of green to mow and I use an old hand me down mulching mower that is not self propelled. I look forward to getting out there and mowing - even the hills - because it gives me a lot of exercise. I call it my beast because it'll go over most anything and I have a great time tackling tall weeds & such. Of course, if there was to be a hot man out there without a shirt mowing my lawn, I wouldn't object.

Hope the new mower works out for you OP. What a great idea to post that here!

Take a look at Snapper, Craftsman, and Toro. All have smaller selfpropelled home owner models.

Hey girl I had an electric mower that I also banished, but to a friend so he could do mean things to it. I got tired of spicing my power cord and uwrapping it from my trees...lol.So I got one of those people powered mowers, the kind where the faster you push the faster you mow. It has a bag that is too easy to empty,no cords to cut...lol,no noise, easy to sharpen and the bonus is it only cost me $80.00. I also have a huge yard and I find my new mower does a great job,I love it and I'm not flirting with electrocution anymore...
