| THINGS ALL MEN SHOULD KNOW HOW TO DO WELL Posted: 5/7/2008 6:25:02 AM | Sort of amusing, and a little condescending. If a man on this site knew how to do any number of things well, do you imagine it would make even one woman here more likely to take any initiative to meet him? When many women on this site presume that a given man probably doesn't have most of these (or similar) skills--and couldn't appreciate them if he did--what difference would it make if he had them? I could easily come up with a comparable list of skills that most women should have, but don't.
Cali found the list in Esquire Magazine, and thought it would be fun for us to recreate our own list. Keyword - FUN. Not man bashing, Fun!!! You could of course start your own list, and that would also be fun. You need to lighten up and stop looking for imaginary male bashers around every corner. Geesh, take a pamprin!

| THINGS ALL MEN SHOULD KNOW HOW TO DO WELL Posted: 5/7/2008 7:30:21 AM | Condescending? I took the idea from a MEN'S magazine, which had a list of 75 things listed from one man to another. Kind of like "Guy Prep School".
I've got to run, but if someone wants to start a "Thing Women Should Know How to do Well" thread, that would equal the playing field.

| THINGS ALL MEN SHOULD KNOW HOW TO DO WELL Posted: 5/7/2008 9:15:00 AM | Already being in agreement with most of what is already listed, I can add:
Change a tire. Change a diaper. Change the oil. Jump-start a car. Make/Change reservations. Write a letter. Soothe a headache. Entertain/Understand a child. Patch a flesh-wound. Throw a punch. Wash a dish. Camp! Give sincere praise/Take praise sincerely. Give/Take criticism equally well. Give a lecture/Take a lecture. Put together an outfit. Give AND receive a massage. Help someone in need.
I believe every adult, male and female, should know how to all of these things well!

| THINGS ALL MEN SHOULD KNOW HOW TO DO WELL Posted: 5/7/2008 2:03:40 PM | Tie a tie.
(Different day, different tie!)
Knowing how to stifle a belch would be nice, too. At least the effort. Not to say some women couldn't use practice in this area.
Shave.
(Best way to kill time before a date.)
For both men and women: learn how to buy groceries without calling home on your cell phone. That's not what "shopping by phone" is supposed to be. Figure out what you need before you leave the house. And if you can't find what you're looking for, improvise. Spaghetti sauce is not a life-altering decision.

And if you can't find what you're looking for, improvise. Spaghetti sauce is not a life-altering decision. This is true. Organizational skills=making a list. I once had to step around some nimrod who was reading the nutritional information to someone over the phone while in the frozen food section.

| THINGS ALL MEN SHOULD KNOW HOW TO DO WELL Posted: 5/7/2008 6:58:28 PM | | I read that issue of *Esquire*, and it seems to me that men of around my age and younger often didn't have a dad/uncle/father figure to kind of show them the ropes of life. And *Esquire*, rather than appealing to best in men, which was their former mission, now have to try to simply try to make MEN out of men. There are a lot of Lost Boys in our society, I think. I prefer shorter lists, personally. I would rather boil things down to essentials. If you learn a few things well, then you will have a foundation on which to build more skills. And as Napoleon Dynamite taught us, girls only want guys with skills. ;) | |

| THINGS ALL MEN SHOULD KNOW HOW TO DO WELL Posted: 5/7/2008 7:56:58 PM | I can do all of Jades' list well! Er ... um ... except that, "Put together an outfit" thing. I am the Master of fashion fox paws. I am like the straight guy with a queer eye. I am a maroon when it comes to color and an umbilical when it comes to fashion. I do know how to thank a woman who pays me a compliment though. Like when Janet said I might be handy to have on an Island because it is surrounded by water and I know water, and then said she would prefer a guy who is like ... 12 to 15 years my senior. Thanks Jan! All men should know how to respect the Ladies, treat them like the Queens they are and not take them for granted. Been there done that. Talk to them and listen. Even when Emeril is on. Write poems and songs and sonnets to them, if you have met them and dated several times. Nothing is worst than writing a poem to a lady you have not met. Just ask ... nevermind. Be real, even if you are a dork. It has worked for me ... ok, it has not worked so well. Give and . Chicks eat that sh*t up.

I once dated a guy who absolutely would NOT wash dishes. He lived solely off of paper plates. And yet he fancied himself a classy guy. Weird...................................

| THINGS ALL MEN SHOULD KNOW HOW TO DO WELL Posted: 5/7/2008 9:52:50 PM | Frame a house (ok, start with a shed & work your way up ...Thats how my kid ended up with a $5K playhouse..)
Plumb a house and/or wire it
Replace a roof
Build a deck
Run a BBQ without too much interference by the local Fire Dept
Rebuild a V8
Maintain a vehicle sucessfully for 100K miles
Cut a .004 light
Make bail
Cut bait
Cut the cheese
Drown kittens
Overthrow governments
Dictate terms of surrender
Castrate tigers
Deflower virgins
ok, that seems to be enough for one day..
& here's one women could do with mastering: The ability to hit the grocery store, get enough food to feed a family for 2 weeks & be out the door in under 15 minutes. Most guys can do it, why can't women? My bloody ex used to take longer than that just negoiating the bagel section of the bread aisle..

| THINGS ALL MEN SHOULD KNOW HOW TO DO WELL Posted: 5/7/2008 11:56:28 PM | Jade,
I think you're great, but a few of your items would get a guy's card pulled:
wash a dish put together an outfit change a diaper
Personally, I can do 2 of those 3 but shhhhssh!, don't tell anyone!!!!

| THINGS ALL MEN SHOULD KNOW HOW TO DO WELL Posted: 5/8/2008 10:28:09 AM | Man if changing a diaper would get you laid, I would be at hugh heffners' place every night.
I can color cordinate I just usually don't care what I leave the house in.
Wash a dish you have got to be kidding me. I try to only wash the pans, paper plates please. Unless a lady is over.
Shoot, I can sew a button, iron better than most women, and make a nice flower arrangement with wildflowers from the river. Not sure how any of these things make me less of a man.
The one thing men should know how to do well.... Be a positive influence in the lives of children they have brought into this world. nothing else really matters.
and the art of a gentle kiss, although this goes both ways

| THINGS ALL MEN SHOULD KNOW HOW TO DO WELL Posted: 5/8/2008 10:59:02 AM | | I don't think knowing how to sew a button, arrange flowers, iron a shirt, or any of the above makes you less than a man, nor did I see anywhere where it was suggested that it would. All we are doing is making a list of what a man in today's world should know how to do. This is to compliment the list that Esquire magazine came out with. This is in no way a knock on men, and if you don't know how to do anything of the things listed, it doesn't make you undesirable or less of a man. It's just a list. | |

Have a good paper plate management system so that no one has to do the dishes and the system does not damage the enviroment!

| THINGS ALL MEN SHOULD KNOW HOW TO DO WELL Posted: 5/8/2008 12:12:38 PM | barbe1963 - no worries I have thick skin. It was in response to a post a little further up this page tongue and cheek about losing your man card. Sarcasm doesn't always come out so well on a forum. LOL
There is plenty to knock about the average man. If you can't laugh at yourself then whats the point!
As long as I don't have to ask for directions we are cool!

[rant] I have encountered this kind of senseless b.s. in the past --mostly from the immature-types of men of any age...
Simply because there is something a woman would be ASSUMED to be better at does not mean it LESSENS a man to be skilled at it!
The low particular VALUE we place on traditionally female work and chores could only mean one thing: This skill-set is under-appreciated by a lot of men (and by some women, too). One can read its value in this society (and others) because of how LITTLE people are willing to PAY to have any of the female archetypal work hired out... (ie. child care, elder care, dish-washing, laundry, and other kinds of repetitive housework, etc...) Whereas the lion's share of so-called "men's work" is generally higher paying (do you really need a list???).
If not, then why is it generally considered an INSULT to be the object of feminine descriptors of a man, as well as being intended as insulting, by the "name-caller?"
Whew! [/rant]

| THINGS ALL MEN SHOULD KNOW HOW TO DO WELL Posted: 5/8/2008 12:28:36 PM | | Glad to hear you are not taking yourself seriously Sketch, others could learn from you. Ot: - I think every man should know how to balance his checkbook (every woman too). | |
|
| THINGS ALL MEN SHOULD KNOW HOW TO DO WELL Posted: 5/8/2008 12:54:25 PM | Part of being a man is learning how to do without -- to do without many things, including a woman. A man should be a man for himself, not to make himself more attractive to women. Therefore, I think a woman's list for what she thinks a man should know can be ignored. This is one more way that modern men let themselves be directed by women -- it starts with mommy, and with some guys it goes on for the rest of their lives.
One thing to learn, though, that EVERYONE will appreciate:
Be a man Not a kid Pee in the can Not on the lid
