I think they do it because they are lazy, plain and simple, they cant be bothered to keep switching lanes. That or its an ego thing, and they dont want everyone overtaking them.
I don't 'hog' the middle lane, but I do use it a lot. It has nothing to do with laziness, I drive a car with traction control, ABS etc, run flat tyres and all the safety features you could ask for, so 70mph is a bloody ridiculous speed. I usually try for about 80-85mph on cruise control. The REASON I use the middle lane mostly, unless the first lane is reasonably clear, is that lane changing is what causes the accidents!!!
I get people all the time who just indicate then pull out in front without even looking to see what's coming up behind them, I fail to see how this is 'safer'
I also get very annoyed at people who drive at inconsistent speeds........why?? it just makes life harder for everyone. God I love the M6 toll road!!!!!!!

IMO lots of people on the road shouldn't have liscence's.

Where's the fun in just sitting in one lane and simply going along at a constant speed.... like a motorway zombie.
I think that changing lanes and speeds keeps you alert and aware of what is going on around you and so makes you a much safer motorway user.

Getting in people's way and them slamming on brakes when flashed, don't want to cause many accidents do you? Please, for the sake of proper drivers, use the A roads.
My mate is Hampshire Traffic and he patrols the m-ways of Hampshire most days and says the main reason given by middle lane hogs when they are stopped is that they feel safer there. Explain that logic. He also says that they would rather see someone using proper lane discipline and driving at 80mph than just sitting in Lane Two at 70mph causing bunching and irritation to other drivers.
4Dexter is spot on concerning changing lanes keeping you alert, I was always taught the mirrors are as or more important than what's in front on a motorway.
The thing is, there is a Driving Lane and two Overtaking Lanes, no such thing as a slow or fast lane.
Dunno why I am getting so upset about it anymore anyhow, we don't get the problem anywhere near as much here, and then it's usually a car with GB plates LOL.

I agree with this to a point, in my previous post I mentioned looking at what's coming BEHIND you, which I always do, with mirrors, then a quick look at my blindspot too!
Howver, the lane changing thing all depends on the amount of traffic. I ALWAYS pull back into the left lane if it's reasonably free, but I simply do not see the point of darting in and out of traffic every few hundred yards.
I do not need lane changes to keep me awake, and frankly, if I'm that tired I pull over to a service area.
It's all about doing what's sensible.

| The Mentality of the Middle Lane Hogger.................Please!!!!!!!!! Posted: 5/8/2008 2:47:07 AM | You have to laugh at the mentality of those who think two wrongs make a right!
On the one hand we have the middle lane hog who expects everyone to go around him, so that he doesn't have to make any lane changes and can pootle along on mental autopilot "for the sake of the environment" (that's a good one, never heard it before!) regardless of inconvenience to others, and considers himself above reproach when he slams on his anchors because a motorist flashes his lights!
On the other hand we have the self-righteous who consider it fair game to pass on the inside regardless of the additional danger to themselves and others, and compound the danger by allowing their attention to be diverted by pointless rude gestures and aggressive driving tactics!

Hopefully, between those two extremes we have the more common driver who drives defensively, and simply accepts the poor driving skills of others as merely another hazard to be negotiated as safely as possible!

I am aware undertaking is breaking the law but so is 'not keeping to the left'.
I do not like Jeremy Clarke; but maybe he got a point when he proposed that we should be allowed to overtake on any lane... like the Yanks. (Never thought I would suggest anything good from the Yanks. )

Clarkson is right on most things, but certainly not that.
Can I just get something clear, I don't "hog" the middle lane in the day time, it's purely a night time excercise. I DO move over for Lorries wishing to overtake, if they indicate properly. I DO move over for emergency vehicles. It's merely a case of, if the road is clear, I use the middle lane. It means I rarely have to overtake.

I get road rage with them and often feel if i did get out to slap them i shouldnt be punished for it, they pushed me into it! lol

Self righteous ! Thank you ! :o)
I agree completely, I shouldnt do it . Its rrrrrrrroad rrrrrrage !
I should point out that I dont undertake lightly, but if the Lane One is clear then why should we not use it ? If some mindless inconsiderate tw*t is sitting at 65 in lane two oblivious to whats around him , and I cant get into lane three because its a 90 mph train, then what am I supposed to do ... sit there in lane two behind the clod and be just as bad as he , happy that he is slowing me down ?
Incidentally - It costs this government - you and I - around 16 million pounds a mile to build a two lane highway, and around 20 million to build a three lane ... so thats 4 million of yours and my pounds that Middle Lane Owners Club member is costing us all .... per mile !
... so thats OK then ....

Crikey! I'm going to go into business building roads then. Obviously the most lucrative trade around

Civil Engineering is indeed lucrative, but only because of volume. The main contractors work on around 8-15% profit margins for most government work.
And the materials involved per mile! ........around 10,000 cubic metres of type 1 MOT, 4 miles of armco fitted onto C35 concrete pads (at a cost of around £110 per cubic metre) at 3m centres... around 2500 cubic metres of hot rolled tar, signage (nowadays, computer controlled and variable), road markings (rumble strips etc)
How much of that £16million do you think is in materials alone!!!

I hope I'm not driving the same stretch of motorway on the day the "clod" suddenly remembers the need to leave the motorway at the next exit, doesn't bother checking the nearside mirror (cos let's face it, most middle lane owners are pretty much on mental cruise control at the best of times), or you're tucked in his NS blindspot at that exact moment, and he pulls over not expecting to be overtaken on that side... Another of those temporarily closed motorways methinks!
Course, I've no doubt that (assuming it's not fatal) you'd hold the clod completely responsible, and consider your actions totally justified!
