Afternoon, out of the rain
Posted: 5/30/2008 10:16:26 AM
Morning broke with a fresh grin. The sun streamed through the windows and as Black stretched sinuously between the sheets he reached over to touch her. She was gone.

Quickly sitting up, “honey”. Nothing. Silence. In mere seconds his mood was pitch black, as much in fear as in anger. “Baby are you inside?”. The quiet was deafening.

Instinctively his skills kicked in, in detached systematic progression, he searched the inside of the house. The house appeared clean, to the eye everything looked untouched, but there was something off.

He walked over to the table. A bottle of wine, two half filled glasses and his briefcase rested on it. Over the back of one of the chairs, a silk scarf was draped casually. Her scarf. He picked it up and held it to his face, her scent enveloped him completely. His heart started to pound, although it did not reflect in his face. Too many years of training prevented that from happening, and signs of emotion equaled death. He looked at the glasses of wine, they looked innocent enough. As he tried to ponder the previous night, for the life of him he couldn’t seem to remember past them sharing a shower and making love. They had both been so impatient for each other. The passion between the heated and intense. Afterwards he had lit a fire and she mentioned something about having a glass of wine…the wine. He picked up the bottle and corked it. He looked at his briefcase. Sitting down he pulled it to the edge of the table in front of him and opened it. The inside looked normal too, but as Black ran his fingertips along the interior felt lining he knew, instantly that along with his lover, the diamonds were gone too.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Gus sat and waited at the edge of the property, he had not anticipated that it would be so pretty out here. The scent of lavender permeated the evening air. He almost felt sorry that what needed to be done had to take place here. “Darla would probably like it” he thought. He had been waiting since 2pm earlier that day, had watched the woman getting ready, obviously for Black. She was a looker, Black had as good taste in women as he did in wine.

The Black BMW drove up, he saw Black get out and embrace his lover. It would only be a matter of time. He had already laced the wine that had been sitting uncorked, obviously to breathe while the woman had showered. Now all he had to do was sit and wait. Patience was the name of the game.

Patience! He cursed himself silently, then grinned. A ciggarette was lit, and plumes of smoke were slowly, almost artisticly exhaled. Patience. The raven haired beauty was his love, touched to the depths of his very soul! Carelessly, she had discarded love for that ....Black.

Gus spat. Cursed silently the two of them, and his own idealisms. Patience. It was what he was trained for. Watching intently, the two playful at park, with picnic. The glasses were retreived from the basket..the wine uncorked...

Smiling, revenge soon to be revisited.

Smash!

The stupid useless prick! He dropped the F..bottle! Look at the two of them! Sopping over each other like a couple o' school kids! Man, oh man! Patience...patience...gus walked away...

Thanks TNT, for the backstory. Tropical most excellent piece of work up there.
i think Gus is with Wanda, Grey is with Darla, Black is with a raven haired beauty, and tan is with a crazy wife we haven't introduced. I'm thinking we should get past the first chapter befor we introduce any more twists. We have yet to introduce the bad guys, or their puppet master.
If there is anyone else out there who has something that feel would fit, feel free to add a scene or two.
I apologize for neglecting the story, and give thanks to you for carrying it on!

Bolt upright! Awakened!

Beads of perspiration upon the brow, and soaked upon the bed sheets, Gus awakened from the nightmare. The neon sign's irritating buzz was a welcome respite from that dreamed.

Meagre was the room, simple, as reflected both his tastes and the transient nature of that on his mind. He lit a ciggarrette. It was not the first cheap hotel stayed at, but if the job went well, it would be the last. The buzz of the neon sign, offered austre comfort.

Gus smoothed back the grey short cropped hair, wet with perspiration. Absent mindedly, the stubble on his chin was stroked: reflecting on past loves long ago. Raven haired that One, unseen in years...greyed perhaps, but vivid in memory. Wanda. Red haired vixen, but untrustworthy...she was a fox to be warry of.

Darla unmet, although rather infamous of reputation.....just who WAS this woman? Legions of concern clouded the mind.The more people included in the operation, the greater chance for failure. Under pressure, the weak became always rats, scurrying as cockroaches caught in the light, to perceived safety of Dycks Annonymous.....D.A.

Reflections were given, as to the job at hand. Unknown by other than code names of Tan, Black and Gray: were they capable of the task, he wondered. Was he, himself, capable? Self doubt was squashed emphatically, brutally extinguised in the ash recepticle....he was trained for such purpose. Doubts borne of paranoia needled further to poke the glowing embers in mind...are they trained? Are they trained...as well....Gus picked up the glock from the night table.

The neon sign buzzed approval. Gus carefully caressed the glock: carefully, methodicaly, compulsively...submitting to sleep was tantamount to nightmare's invitation...

["] . . . . .as Black ran his fingertips along the interior felt lining he knew, instantly that along with his lover, the diamonds were gone too. ["]

He takes his cell phone out, and calls. There is no answer, her voicemail picks up

his head turns up, and his eyes look forward in the direction of the wiondow, but he's not looking, he's thinking. Who had knowledge of the diamonds, and who had knowledge that he was with someone, and where he lived. He has never mentioned her on his side of business, the only one's who he talks to regularly about anything are Tan, and Grey. Noone else that he comes in contact with has any reason to know. On her side who has she spoken with. He thinks 'I'm sure she speaks of us to the few people in the office where she works' None of them would know anything about what i do, they know me as an architect, and her as their boss, and a interior designer. Have we let on at all, has anyone taken an undue interest? Any busy bodies she's mentioned? There haven't been any unusual cars following either of us, she would have said something.
Tapping his fingers on the table, he considers everyone he's encountered in the past few days.The waitress, and bartender at the restaraunt downtown. No they only knopw eachother from frequenting the restaraunt through the past couple years.
There isn't anyone around here that knows them, that would have a reason to suspect anything.
He thinks of his own business, there's Tan, There's Grey, There's Gus that fat **stard, if he has anything to do with this i'll hang him, and burn his bar down.

The house phone rings, He turns and walks to the hall table, and picks up

Black - "Hello"

Gus - "Hey James, I got your wife, and your diamonds. "

Black - " what is it you want with them, we've been working together for a long time Gus, what's going on, is it money?"

Gus - "You know I've been running that shytty little strip club for over 14 years, and I think it's time that i take my share and get on to bigger and better things"

Black - "Look fat azz, wtf does Carrie have to do with that? You could have taken the diamonds and been gone, how effing stupid are you, you know I'm going to kll you right?"

Gus - "You are in position to talk to me in that tone, yeah i could've walked away with the diamonds, but i also know that you have built up quite a savings from all the jobs that you pulled, and I'll give you back your girl when you bring me six hundred thousand cash"

Black - "When, where"

Gus - "How long is it going to take you?"

Black - "When, where"

Gus - "Downtown on the corner with all the new foo foo cofee places, in an hour and a half"

Black - with the situation in somewhat order, starts to pay attention to the noises he hears in the phone. He listens for Carries voice, any muffled sounds, anything. He hears a background hush, and the sound of wind, the sounds he hears when he walks out his back door. He looks out the back window, to see what is going on, and sees the limbs of the trees being blown, and the tide coming in on the beach. "How will I reach you?"

Gus - "Just call me on my phone, I'll expect to hear from you soon"

Black - hangs up the receiver, and grabs his gym bag sitting on the floor behindthe couch. He walks to the hallway and, takes hold of the picture, lifting it off the wall. He opens the safe behind and takes out several fol of cash, putting them in his gym bag.
He runs up stairs and puts on a pair of jeans, and boots. He runs back down the stairs taking a black wind jacket from the closet by the door, retrieving his keys, from the hall table, and the gym bag, adn walks out the door.

The car is seen taking a left at the end of the drive. He keeps his speed down, so as not to raise any dust. He drives slowly down the road and even slower approaching several rows of trees, on the other side of a thick forest, that was only an acre thick. If he figured right Gus was out here, and would be heading to his car about now to head into town.
Black drove almost to the end of the brush befor getting to the edge of the clearing where the rows of maples started. He parked, grabbing his gym bag, and weapon from behind his back.
He ran softly to the edge of the clearing to see if he could spot anything, there it was Gus Crown Victoria, about sixty yards away. and pulled in between a row of trees,
'He must have parked there, and watched us all night' Black thinks to himself
Scanning the rows of trees he finally sees Gus emerge from the far end of the woods, with a pistol in one hand, and the other holding Carrie's arm. He stays in wait for Gus to walk until he can get a clearer shot. As Gus walks, he doesn't look back, and James makes up the difference in distance quickly moving within twenty yards of them.
Hmm, first words and he'll grab her and she'll be a human shield.
He takes a few steps, and begins to jog lightly towards them.
He gets within ten yards, and he steps on a twig. The noise alerts Gus but, not enough to frighten him, he looks back over his shoulder to see whats going on. Black still in stride, holds up the bag, and yells "Gus I brought your money" while taking aim, and putting two shots in his chest. Carrie falls to the ground at the sound of the shots fired, Black runs up to them looks at Gus then quickly over to Carrie, and picks her up from the ground and takes her in his arms

Black - "Grey this is Black, Gus has just passed away"

Thank God that idiot Gus is outta the way, thinks Knuckles. Smiling to himself, there would be one less to share the take with.

Now he would be free to express unhindered desires, for that red haired fox Wanda...

Grey - " Understood. What about knuckles? Call me on the land line. I don't trust these cell phones."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He stepped out of the car, tie askew, although perfect double windsor knotted. Eyes cold steel blue, reflecting idealisms tempered by the harsh realities of experience. It had been along time since the inaugral graduation parade of Cadet Steeves.
It was another homicide scene.
Detective Steeves nodded to the Sergeant. Passed golden tape, perimeter suggested to keep paid news gossipers at bay, baying like hounds for the scraps off the butcher table. The body was that of the ill famed Gus. Steeves let his mind drift to that known of the deceased...small time thug, running a strip bar...record of small time offences for drug running, possession, traficking...just another lost of life....
"He's been shot, maybe twice".
"What?" replies Steeves, absent mindedly, thoughts interupted.
"Shot, Sir. Twice." says the constable.
"ya. Full report by tommorow."
Steeves walks away. The blaring sounds of sirens and human voices excited become a backdrop for the drama of his thoughts. Gus was small time...what of that Black......James Black aka 'Diamond Jimmy': suspected in that diamond heist, mastermind. Notorious reputation, although the DA could make nothing stick...He lit a ciggarette.
Knuckles was involved somehow, with that red haired...what was her name again?
He exhaled the smoke. Children played on the swings. He looked back to the crime scene. The coroner and police at their duty...what irony.
Wanda...that was her name...and what of that Darla? Tan, was another one. Grey, they'd picked up on his cell phone communications. He was another unsavoury character, record as long as your arm, and then some. It was all connected somehow....Steeves considered at length his next step...
Carrie falls to the ground at the sound of the shots fired, Black runs up to them looks at Gus then quickly over to Carrie, and picks her up from the ground and takes her in his arms
Black - "Grey this is Black, Gus has just passed away"
Carrie looked up at Black, her almond shaped eyes were wide, even though he could see her fear, her gaze was steadfast. He did not doubt for a second that she trusted and loved him...A stray leaf haphazardly stuck in her hair and a smudge of dirt marred her nose. “Baby, I know you lead an exciting life, but don’t you think this is a little overkill?”
Black laughed. He knew the weight of the situation did not escape her, but this was one of the reasons why he loved this woman. Her sense of humor; it came out at the most unexpected times and her knack for lightening intense moments with a witty quip made her especially precious to him. He kissed her on her dirt smudged nose, and squeezed her to him tighter. “Are you ok, Honey?”
"Yeah, I’m ok but, can you tell me who this guy is?" She indicated the now stiffening Gus. "I know you told me that the less I know the better, and I understand your reasoning, however whatever it is that you’re working on seems to have found its way into our home and that makes me a tad uncomfortable. That guy came from out of no where. He gave me a whopper of an egg on the top of my head, by the way. James, I need to understand, he seemed to know you and he knew my name."
“Sweetheart, when the time is right, I’ll be able to tell you everything. I just can’t tell you everything yet, as much for your protection as for mine. I will say this, not everything is going as planned. That guy there on the ground was one of the informants. He wasn’t a very trustworthy character, but the mission needed some of the information he had access to. I need you to be safe and clearly you are not safe here. Baby I’m sorry, I didn’t want you to get anywhere near this. I hate to rush you babe, but I need to move you to a safer place and reach a land line”.
'We gota get outta here!" Knuckles exclaims. "The f cops 'll be all over this!"
"Ya." retorts Black. "Go to that room of yours, and wait for my call. I gotta call Grey on the land line."
Gently, Black removed the smudge from Carrie's nose, with a soft caress. She was an amazing woman. "Come with me, quickly."
'Where?" She asks. "Shall I call a cab...."
"No! That can be traced! Just walk with me and be cool."
They looked upon each other simultaneously, and smiled. She WAS cool...one of the many reasons he loved her, Black reflected while walking with her. Black gave her a gentle kiss on her cheek...
Raindrops softly implore awakening at the window pane. Steeves complies. Many things occupy his mind, not the least of is the homicide investigation. Priority first is coffee: instant of course, boiled on the hot plate of the rooming house, considered home. Home is where the hearth is? he mused. He lit a ciggarette.
Sometimes it was just difficult to face the day: hyphocrsy abounding in false ideals, efforts spent not only unappreciated, but thwarted outright, for shallow personal agendas. Morning ablutions completed, dressed, he straightened his frame to greet another day. Preoccupied with the case, Steeves was oblivious to other patrons on shared public transit.
Steeves arrived at the precinct. The desk sergeant gave greeting nonchalant, but looked up. That was unusual.
"Chief wants ta' see ya."
"ya, OK." WTF does HE want?
"Steeves." The portly man greeted. "Come in, and close the door."
The detective closes the door, and waits, curious. He is invited to sit down, and does so. The weighted man pin striped leans across the desk, with hands folded, attempting to appear authoritive.
"Steeves" the small man begins. "You haven't got the faintest clue about what's going on here. You are dismissed. Give me your badge and service weapon. You are herewith releived of duty."
"Uh, huh." silence erupts, deafening tensions cascading off the walls. Unheard, but tangible.
Shouted silence continues for a few moments, and Steeves rises. The portly man follows suit, awkwardly.
"Look, Steeves. Just take an early pension, and get outta' here, OK?"
Pinstriped offers a hand, perhaps it was the intent to grasp. Steeves looks upon that tool of the serpent, gazes in eye. Perspiration breaks out upon the brow of the small man dressed to be large. Straightening frame, gaze never faltered , but with disgust intensified, he turns and walks out.
Knuckles walked away, briskly. The beauty of the lined maples were lost upon him. They served as cover.
That Black is one smart dude, he thought. Ditchin' the cars like that....must be traceable or something. He hurried on, stoppin at a convenience store for a six pack, before ariving at his room.
Leather jacket removed and tossed, the night table was cleaned with one grand sweep of the hand, contents to cohort comfortable with the rest of the rubbish, floor bound. He cracked open the first bud, and reflected. A ciggarette was lit.
It wouldn't hurt to call Wanda, he mused...after all, he was just waiting for Black's calll...
Knuckles picked up the phone, and waited....cheap hotel switchboard operators...he cursed. ......He waited. ..... growing impatient, he popped the top off another can of Bud, and drank freely.
In fantasy, he began to think of Wanda...red haired, tough, intelligent...probably most gentle too. Dreams began to impose themselves on realities, alcohol fuelled, and visions of red haired mermaids seeking existence only to please him, lured him to...
"yeah." The gruff voice interupted.
"WTF??..ah..What takes so F long! " The awoken stammered. "Get me the local operator! Now!"
F desk clerks...think they own the joint...he mused. He rewarded himself with another beer, self congratulating his wit, and circumstance in general. The dialed number met with success after connection to land lines, the phone wrang at the other end. Answered to, was the unmistakable voice of Wanda. Self contented delusions well fuelled, prompted Knuckles to respond "Hi Baby."
"Who is this!??!! Gus? I thought I told you never to call me!!??
"ah,..... It's Knuckles..."
"Knuckles!?? WTF do YOU want? Never mind. I'm busy, right now."
....click...
She didn't know about Gus yet: he didn't get a chance to tell her. What an awesome woman!
Pacified with dreams and alcohol, Knuckles laid down...absent mindedly swatting a cockroach. Yes, he chuckled. When it came to swatting cockroaches, he simply ruled..
The phone rings on the black rotary dial phone that sat on the shelf under the bar.
Black - "Hey Jeff, I guess what you were telling me was right. Didn't think he'd come straight after us, but he did this morning. You need to come out here so that we can get him out of here. I need to make arrangements for my family, and find out everything that he might have told anyone else about us"
Thank God that idiot Gus is outta the way, thinks Knuckles. Smiling to himself, there would be one less to share the take with.
Knuckles hangs up the phone, and looks around the bar. It was closed, and empty this time of the morning. Looks like it's going to be empty by one more now. He looks down at his seltzer water, maybe she'll get over him now. Had to happen, he thinks to himself. Had to happen on way or another.
He takes his keys out of his pocket, looks around the bar, ducks under the bar and heads towards the door. He reaches over flips the light switch, and walks out the door.
(The door is heard locking, as the camera faces the door)
Been a demon chasing the detective since he was a child. Gus, and Knuckles were from a group about ten years older than himself, black, and, tan, but they knew eachother. Grey was another story, they all knew him too. He wanted to hate these guys, but, for the most part they provided him with something other than the usual, drug dealing bullshyt he had gotten used too. These guys, kept themselves, their families, and aqcuantancies out of trouble. All except for a few like Gus, now someone thought he was no longer needed. Probably didn't go down like that, he just didn't have the information to put it together. Steeves looked out, at the patrolman, at the cop cars, at the riverside, at the sidewalk where the body was, at the reporters;, at the joggers, who found this guy on a highly used jogging path but no one saw who did this, he looked out at the world, that was all looking in on him and his childhood friends. Where does this stop, what the hell have they started here, how do we keep this quiet?
Notorious reputation, although the DA could make nothing stick...He lit a ciggarette.
Knuckles was involved somehow, with that red haired...what was her name again?
Scene begins where Jeff aka Knuckles pulls up to the edge of the tree line, where Jimmy and Carrie, are calming themselves, and Jimmy is preparing himself, and thinking over the options of the rest of the day in his head.
Jimmy sees Jeff, and waves him over to where they, and the other vehicle are. Seen is Jeff's car driving over the grass, as it pulls up next to them.
Jeff's leans over to his passenger side window, already rolled down, and asks - "are you guys,alright?"
Jimmy - "yeah, we're fine"
Jeff - "finally lost his mind! . . . what do you need me to do?"
Jimmy - "you bring what I asked?"
Jeff -"Yeah"
Jimmy - "then, we'll be fine"
The scene jumps to the two men in blue jeans, tshirts, and sunglasses, carrying a green canvas tarp from the edge of the park to the side walk, and then dumping Gus out onto the sidewalk.
Jeff - "there's no blood, they ain't going to buy this"
Jimmy reaches in his pants, takes out his silenced weapon and shoots gus in the leg
Jimmy - "that's as good as it gets"
'We gota get outta here!" Knuckles exclaims. "The f cops 'll be all over this!"
"Ya." retorts Black. "Go to that room of yours, and wait for my call. I gotta call Grey on the land line."
They left the park in Jeff's car. As Jimmy drove, he picked up his cellphone and mad a call. Afterward he turned to Carrie, and said
Jimmy - "Baby, I'm going to drop you off at the house so you can clean up. I'm going to need you to be ready half an hour after I drop you off. Jeff, and I are going to take his, and Gus's car to a place downtown. You have to come pick me up."
Jimmy to Jeff - "I'm going to give you the money for a cab, and you're going to wait til i get ahold of you"
<div class='quote'>Knuckles walked away, briskly. The beauty of the lined maples were lost upon him. They served as cover
he jumped in Gus's car and followed black down the gravel road.
The two men are seen standing in front of a white garage, walking toward the street.
Jimmy to Jeff - "Take the rest of the day, and rest. Don't do anythin stupid, just sleep"
Jimmy gets in his car, driven by Carrie, while Knuckles gets into a yellow cab parked behind them.
Black to Grey - "Sean, yeah this is James. That fat turd from the bar showed up at my house this morning. He tried to take the diamonds, the only thing that held him back was even more greed. He took Carrie, and held as ransom. He no longer exists."
Sean - "Yes, i thought i recognized his clothes from the news, being repoted as a mugging incident. No witnesses. Never suspected him, been with us along time. You think the old guys are going to look out for their own, more like eat your own. So what else do we know"
James - "From what I can tell he wanted the diamonds for himself. Doesn't sound like he ever talked to the new goofs at his club, or their boss. The idiot would probably still be alive, and half way around the world if he had left her out of it, hell i'd still be in bed."
Sean - "Bad choices on his part. What's going on with knuckle's. What impression are you getting?"
James - "If he doesn't get to drunk, and lose his mind, he'll be fine. Has always been pretty straight up. I think he wanted Geuster's girl Wanda. I don't think he had anything todo with this. He had given me a small heads up that i didn't pay enough attention too."
Sean - "Wanda?"
James - "Yeah, I think he's on our side"
Grey in his living room darkened, only the light on the end table is lit.
Grey - "Darla, this is Sean. Gus had an incident earlier this morning . . . . I want you to keep an ear out, and let me know what happens around there."
Darla - "an incident?"
Sean - "yeah love, he won't be coming back"
Sean looking down into his whiskey glass, then taking a drink.
Sean - "He wanted to go into business on his own, he tried to cross us, and was stopped"
Darla - "Wanda is going to freak out, she'll be out of her mind . . ."
Sean - "No choice in the matter, he took Jimmy's wife hostage"
Darla - "oh my God, is she alright. How's Jimmy"
Sean - "Jimmy's fine, he got to them in time. She's fine, probably a little shaken up, but no injuries. Look i think Jeff is interested in Wanda."
Darla - "Yeah, I can tell"
Sean - "Well, keep him off her until she's over this, and keep me informed. I'm coming by later. Your coming to stay with me this weekend?"
Darla - "What time you coming around?"
Sean - "after the news repot"
Darla - "ok see you then"
Sean - "This weekend?"
Darla - "already packed"
The scene at the bar as Grey walks in. The 7 oclock news, on the local channel repeats the 5;30 news.
A man behind a desk reports" a elderly man, appearing to be in his fifties was found at Roosevelt Memorial Park this afternonn, the police report that the man was mugged, and shot to death this afternoon. No witness's were available for comment"
Grey walks by Knuckle's who is cleaning glasses at the bar, he says "hello" and keeps walking.
As he
s walking he see's at the table on the right hand side of the room, a group of four men in their twenties talking to a waitress, and drinking rather heavily as it appears from the empty glasses on the table. He continues walking passed the stage, to the rear of the bar. Darla comes out from the back, she looks at him as he walks right by and into the men's laboratory. She continues on her way to the bar where she sits , and begins to speak with Knuckle's. Grey walks out of the bathroom, speaking with one of the dancer's, she takes his arm and they walk to the bar taking a seat several stools down from Darla and Knuckles.
Grey - "Whiskey, and seven and seven for the lady"
Knuckles - "You got it"
Grey glances at Darla, and turns to the young dancer on his right hand side. Their drinks are delivered, and Grey passes the seven, and seven to the girl, and picks up his whiskey. They toast, and he sips his drink as he looks around the room, to see what is going on. The group at the right hand side of the bar, is calling over a dancer, as one of them is pointing in Grey's direction as he speaks to the man on his right. The group keeps their heads down, except to call over the dancer. Grey turns back to the bar, he glances at Knuckles, who nods in affirmation that those are the guys. He turns back to the girl on his right, and kisses her on the lips.
Black I know that you must have a million questions baby. I will answer them all . . . when i get the chance, but for now I've got to focus. You should get some sleep, you've had a pretty stressful day.
i(flashback to the precinct that morning)
Steeves descended the worn marble stairs. The desk sergeant looked up, and spoke to wish him well, with a sincerity unmistakably seen in eye. Other personell greeted him as befitted their aquaintance, rank structure, or both. In his mind Steeves knew he would return, and he chuckled to himself.
Walking briskly along the sidewalk to the corner diner, where he customarily enjoyed his morning repast before reporting for duty, Rose the waitress expressed surprise at seeing him again. Steeves winked at her.
'Just coffee, Rosie.'
Rose smiled, and brought him a cup. Although she was curious about his unusual presence at this time, she said nothing. She had served him his usual: one egg over easy with one slice of toast at his expected time but a half hour before. Something was up, she thought. He thanked her, and gave her two bucks, in keeping with his custom of generousity.
Steeves reflected on the situation: out of the precinct temporarily, without the 'badge', that situation would be resolved in a couple of weeks 'through internal affairs. He chuckled. The homicide: that was the focus. Gus was dead, not surprising...but that Black: James Black....cared for his family and friends, obviously intelligent, compassionate for his sweetheart Carrie.....
It would be necessarry to contact Mr. James Black, he mused. The first step would be to find out his cell phone number, if he had one. Second, he would have to gather as much information as he could about the illustrious James aka 'Jimmy' Black, and his cohorts as well. A familiar number was dialed from the diner payphone, to a less than formal greeting.
'Steeves. I need information on a James Black, aka 'Jimmy' dob..." whispered the detective into the mouthpiece.
'Yeah. Ok.'Replied the voice. 'Talk later.'
"Black lifts his phone to his ear......."
'Yes?' Says Black.
'James Black? My name is Steeves. We need to talk.'
There is silence for a few moments..........
'We need to talk, now or later.' Steeves replied cooly.
Steeves smiled. The tone of Black's voice suggested confidence, a person used to being in command. There was something about this guy that was different from the usual dealings with persons he'd met in the line of duty: informants, who'd sell their own Mothers for the next score, uniformed imbeciles that stuck a badge through their chest without fear of piercing their non existent heart, and the hollow eyed soul less individuals for whom material satisfaction , had become symbolic of fleeting success.
'Do you know who I am?' Continued Steeves.
James Black was an unusual individual, according to his sources. Apparrently, he was at a bar uptown. Knuckles was serving bar, and Grey was there with some woman named Darla......
Silence continued to the backdrop of Steeve's thoughts....
James turned into the Alley just befor dawn. Parks on the side of a whitewashed building amidst, strewn trash, and newspapers blowing in the breeze. Getting out of the car he pushes the door open with a gloved hand, and puts one foot on the ground then the other. He sits in his car for a moment looking backdown the Alley from where he entered. He gets up, steps out and closes the door. He walks over to a white door with no window, takes hold of the handle ansd steps in. He starts climbing the staircase, until he reaches the fifth floor. He looks up another ten stairs to a door at the end of the stairwell.
Walking out on the roof of the building, and over to the edge he takes off his sunglasses. Looking out onto the roof tops around reminds him of where he came. This corner of the city delapitated, and forgotten about. Old newspapers, and trash strewn throughout the visible series of alleyways. Remembers running these alleys as a kid when they were full of life, with the meatpacking plant, and various other business's around here. This place aways had crews of people running through here from the honest working man, in the day, to the cars parked back here after hours.
Remembering the picket lines, and newspaper headlines of "cutbacks having wide reaching affects" he puts his sunglasses back on, and he catches a glimpse of the water out of the corner of his eye.
He turns his head and wals to the other side of the roof. Staring out at the bay, looking at the boats in the harbor. Nice boats he thinks, remembering swimming bays like this with his former friends back in the service. Looking around at the newly constructed office buildings, and coffee places, trying to keep from forming an opinion he walks to the other side of the builing. Facing the direction of home, he sighs "she's safe now", he had Carrie sent to stay at his Uncle's place up north this morning. Four o'clock in the morning they left. Spent a few moments last night packing after the activities quieted down. They then took a shower, and spent the rest of the night in bed . . .
"James!" he hears from behind, not turning to the voice but regretting another second that he had too send her away.
He turns to the voice "How have you been?"
Papers blew about in the predawn glow of streetlamps. Coffee was sipped, as the city came to life. Ironic, the change that had come about the place, but still with that same familiarity.
Thoughts drifted to earlier times, when children played, but hard, on the streets there: a front stoop was a territory to be protected, and a simple game of ball was all consuming, in keeping with honour and status among those in the 'hood. Evident decay abounded, ghosts of past unseen perceived to winds upon yesterday's papers and trash, scattering aimlessly in desperation to cling hold of fleeting logic. A ciggarette was lit.
As expected, a car arrives. The sole occupant is slow to disembark; slowly, methodicaly, cautious but also reflective. He walks towards the white door, the workers entrance to the meat packing plant from eons ago, now just a derelect entrance to another forlorn forgotten warehouse. A ciggarette is crushed in the shadows of a hidden doorway, and a man emerges from darkness there to steathily follow the path of the sole figure beyond that entered through the white door.
