If gas prices got too high for me to fill my car up, then I would probably have a very hard time trying to sell it. Because the other guy would also have to fill it.

yeah jeeps are crap , they get bad mileage plus they are a poorly put together machine
my first subaru was a 78 station wagin 4x4 it was ugly as hell but was great on gas, in think it had 400k miles on it
the outbacks ive heard, are pretty damn nice little vehicles which give about the same amount of room as a jeep but double the mpg tho
they used to push the " import parts will kill ya pricewise angle" but seeing as even the big 3 outsource to the other countries, there really all imports these days
so may s well go with the companies that offer the highest quality at the ost reasonable price. unfortunately the american autos dont measure up

No...won't be selling anytime soon. Will try the new HHO idea being pomoted by Jimmy Carter. I have family members working on converting their car engines ASAP now...and my car is next to be "equipped"....

I have an Chevy Trailblazer and have not considered selling it. The reason being is that I want the flexibility to be able to go places that I want to go. However, I also live in a city where there is a tremendous transportation system and where you can get discounts on you insurance if you prove you buy monthly passes. So, most of the time I use the subway but other times (such as grocery shopping, various appointments, etc) when places are not serviced by the train, I take my vehicle. All in all, I spend less than $15 a week on gasoline.

YES !

My 93 Astro Van, and the two other Auto's I have are up "FOR SALE",...due to the high cost of fuel.
I will ride my Bicycle,...or if I have to go far,....I will ride my Motorcycle, that gets 50 MPG.

I have been complaining about the cost of Gas, since it started going over $1 Dollar,a gallon.

If that tells you anything about my thoughts on high gas prices.

One of my earliest jobs was pumping Gas, at the Local Imperial Gas Station,....
Regular cost $28 Cents a Gallon,....
Ethyl, cost $32 Cents a Gallon,....

You could fill your tank for $10.00 or less.

Gas prices didnt flucuate much, if at all,..and prices remained stable, untill the big Oil Shortage in the Seventies, where at the time, there were "Odd and Even" days to buy gas, and only so many gallons,.....

Cars were lined up around the block at Gas Stations in California,......when in San Pedro, next to "Ports O' Call",...the Refinery's, was constantly being busted for hiding gas, in what was supposedly emepty Tanks,.....and fined a few thousand dollars, on each discovery of fuel hoarding.

Gee,..you do the math,.....Pay a few thousand dollars,.....and make a few Million ?

Pretty simple when you consider that at todays gas prices,..their making $BILLIONS$
of $Dollars$ of profit each Quarter.

FOR SALE,
1993 ASTRO VAN
1995 NEON
1995 SATURN

INQUIRE WITHIN TENT.

My current car is a '92 civic, which gets about 30mpg/hwy, which makes up the vast majority of my commute-my work is 19 miles each way, mostly on the freeway.
I would use Public Transit, but none runs there; I used to be a City bus driver...and the current motorcoach company I work for does run service from the far NW suburbs to downtown Milwaukee...it's actually quite popular, as the discounted (bulk purchase) tix price comes to 2.75 each way, and that covers a trip of 40 miles each way-not to mention no parking costs, and no mileage depreciation on the car: AAA now estimates that the average American car costs .50/mile to operate!

I try to follow the gas/oil threads, and I dont recall reading this... I just stumbled across this info...

A typical barrel of oil is 42 gallons which ONLY yields 19 gallons of gas!!!

Please tell me this isn't true?

A typical barrel of oil is 42 gallons which ONLY yields 19 gallons of gas!!!

I watched a news special last night that said only "15" gallons of gas are made form each barrel of oil, the remaining oil is used to make styrafoam plates, and meat packaging plates,..etc,....

You,..basicly, you heard it right.

The lies were fed about the cost of oil , have little to do with fuel....just greed,....and
$$$MONEY$$$

Our styrafoam plates, and the plates that are used to package meat,...could be made from a renewable source, such as "Paper",..or better yet,.."Hemp",......

Hemp,..could be used for sooooooooooooooo many things, that would reduce our need for oil,...or allow us to aquire more gallons of oil, per barrel.

Wouldnt it be nice, in a "Perfect World",...that if,..we were to continue useing oil, for gasoline for our autos,...that the entire barrel, be converted into fuel,..instead of wasting it to make styrafoam plates, that are turning our land fills into dirty areas, due to the styrafoam plates non breakdown effect, when thrown away.

Maybe then fuel wouldnt cost so much.

That styrafoam plate,...and a lot of other stuff,..could be replace with a renewable source,..instead of fossel fuel.

So them, we wouldnt have to sell our autos, in order to be able to buy gas.

I sure agree with this:
If people were actually selling their cars because fuel was too expensive...who the hell would buy them? lol

I'd keep my mini-van. I have one because I can throw my wheelchair in the side sliding door behind driver seat while standing on my one good leg.
Would have a smaller car, if it were possible.
Would have a motorcycle again, if it were possible.
But, this is my life now.
When gas gets TOO expensive, (not "if"), I'll keep it still and just use it every now and then. Retired... can do that. It gives me more mobility.

The price of gas may force me to quit running my 4x4 truck, but I wouldn't sell it. I guess I'll have to get a small car to run around with, and only use the truck when necessary.

Public transportation is not an option for me, as I live out of town.

Nope, no way I'd get rid of my vehicle. Public transport is a joke around here, particularily in my neighbourhood, where the bus only runs like 8-6 M-F, reduced on Sat and never on Sundays. NOt practical. Plus there is no way in HELL I would stand out there with 4 children in -40 temps all winter. Right now we don't drive too much because I work from home and kids homeschool, but if it came down to it I would limit extra currics to either only 1 per season or only those right in our area, They normally are at extra curric's 5-6 days a week (not all of them every night but each one takes 2-3 things and with 4 of them it adds up) all over the city. I drive a minivan, when I filled up yesterday the clerks exact words were "Holy Shit it costs $104 to fill that thing" The station I was at was still only 119.9 per litre so lower then every where else. Over course I had driven it right to fumes, and had to put 86 litres in. Nope no way would I sell my mini van, I'd just cut back on my driving.

Sell your car now, buy a big gas tank and as much gas as you can. Then when the price of gas doubles again, sell the gas and buy an electric car.

I sold my car that got 50 MPG and kept my bike that gets only 45 MPG. Oops. My bad. I saw an electric scooter online that looked pretty good for daily commuting. It's the size of a small motorcycle and goes fast enough for around town. There are more options than car versus bus. Some vehicles run on propane, which is cheaper than gasoline. Horses will make a comeback, just you wait.

can anyone think of a better choice than a subaru?

NOPE! I drive a 1995 Subaru. Best car I've ever had! I've got 164,000 miles on it.....keeps on going and going and going!! I will say, however, it doesn't get great gas mileage since it's AWD.

However, there are now lots more options for All Wheel Drive. I guess it just depends on what you need your vehicle for.

I'm too independent (selfish, perhaps) to rely on public transportation.

so it appears from the majority of posters that not many people would sell or store their vehicles no matter what the price of fuel goes to.

The above is what i originaly thought......

The UK does have quite a good public transport system in the larger towns and cities and can be quite a pain trying to drive into some of the cities at peak times.

People use the excuse that the cost of public transport is too high but compared to taxi fares for the same distances public transport is very cheap, so people refuse to use public transport because of the cost, this is my original point- even tho the cost of private fuel keeps going up and up no one is prepared to leave the car at home and use the cheaper public transport.

So, no matter how much private fuel goes up the vast majority of people will STILL pay no matter what cost to keep their vehicle on the road.

I think its more to do with the ease and convenience of the car that most people will never sacrifice.

When xxx brand of food goes up in price some people will opt for cheaper zzz brand but the same level of thinking doesnt seem to apply to motor vehicles.............no matter the cost some WILL ALLWAYS have money for the luxury of their motor vehicle.

yeah, im loving the desiel pickup prices atm. Just last year, you couldnt find a used one under $25k. Now theres 2005's n 6's for $13k. Me n the guys at work have bought Geo Metros for around 300 bucks because of gas prices. We may look like idiots driving them to work.(Apperently, I'm too tall for them) But hey, Im only filling up my nice car for weekends. So whos the idiot.

I have a 2007 Ford F150 with all the options and will be putting it up for sale shortly. I've had it for 15 months and have only put 7300 miles on it because of the gas. It was something I bought as a vehicle to cruise with, but with the price of gas I'm now considering a Mini Cooper!!!!

Recent survey done by an insurance company here in Australia about what sacrifices people will make as costs rise...and the percentage of people who said they'd be willing to cut back their spending on petrol was greater than the percentage who said they'd be willing to cut back their spending on beer. So it seems Australians won't mind selling their cars , but the beer fridge stays.
