I did read a review at the weekend that OP states and it got a excellent review...so perhaps that one first ?
Thomas Keannelly...Schlinders Ark - before it became a List....excellent.
Oh and when I was a little girl I read "Seven Little Australians" by Ethel Turner over and over and over again...cause I liked it when Judy died...see fascinated with death even then and I just gave the ending away.........sorry

| What is the best Australian book you have read? Posted: 5/13/2008 5:58:26 AM | Maybe its sacrilege but I didn't like 'Cloud Street'. It seemed a bit deliberately and unnecessarily unclear. There were characters that appeared to have no purpose. There was something weird happening with the washing line and an old aboriginal bloke turning up in an unnerving way here and there and I never worked out why.
I like novels where the loose ends all tie up at the end. Anyway having not enjoyed that one I haven't read any other Tim Wintons.
And the other thing that slightly annoyed me was that he took a bit of poetic license with the streets in Perth. Even allowing for the time period that the book was written in they dont run that way.

Posted: 5/13/2008 6:50:01 AM | | I really enjoyed Andrew McGahans 'Praise' It's rather a bleak novel that finishes pretty much where it starts so the characters don't really grow and the loose ends don't get tied up...you'd hate it Dimeadozen. I liked it cos it depicted the seedy side of Brisbane that I remember living in as sixteen year old so well, the dingy bedsits and the drunks and junkies.

| What is the best Australian book you have read? Posted: 5/13/2008 2:44:26 PM | I read Shantaram a few years back (original cover) when it first came out and literally could not put it down. I then leant it out and never got it back! I have since purchased another copy and have started reading it again. It is by far the best book I have ever read. The guy is a literary genius! | |

Pookie Tim Winton is awesome, I'm sure you'll love him, Cloudstreet is just so cool and Dirt Music also, I haven't read Breath yet but it's on hold at the library and there's a few older ones of his I must chase up

| What is the best Australian book you have read? Posted: 5/14/2008 3:31:11 AM | What about the Magic Pudding??? I vaguely remember reading this book when I was about 7 years old and being somewhat disturbed but intrigued by the illustrations which, from memory, were a bit weird? | |

| What is the best Australian book you have read? Posted: 5/14/2008 3:41:48 AM | When I saw this thread I looked in my book shelves and struggled to find any australian books.
I have a couple of non fiction political books - of which the best is John Martinkus A Dirty Little War - about the East timor issues
But the only fiction novel by an Australian author I could find was John Birmingham's He Died with a Falefel in his Hand
Stange why schools and friends dont encourage reading of australian books

| What is the best Australian book you have read? Posted: 5/14/2008 4:05:17 AM | | I agree. To begin Cloudstreet seems a little obtuse - A little out there as do many of tim wintons books initially. It may appear it takes 100 pages for him to get a roll on. What I like about "Breath" is how it doesn't dilly dally and gets straight to the heart of a man's soul. His prose of teenage males is exceptionally realistic and their experience of big waves even more so. Mind you the sexual content could offend including asphixiation parts, but I reckon it will bring readers out of woodwork like harry potter did for kids. I know a big call, but see what happens. | |

| What is the best Australian book you have read? Posted: 5/14/2008 4:43:36 AM | For me, I think I identify (or would like to think I do) with a lot of the books I read....most of mine have in common that the main characters are true pioneering battlers. I can empathise with their struggles....my favourite book ever is "Angela's Ashes" (I know, Frank McCourt is not an Aussie, but I am sure I was Irish in a past life!)...and like Ruth Park's Harp series....it made me laugh and cry within the first few pages, without being patronising or pretentious.
I don't always like a happy ending...life's not necessarily like that. I like well developed, gutsy characters who don't take themselves too seriously. Rough diamonds with a ratbag streak. A bit like my friends in real life.
I loathe wordy texts that try too hard to be part of some arty-farty 'in' crowd.

I think this is why I haven't read Tim Winton - I must've picked up one of his at some point and skimmed a couple of pages. But I promise I will try him soon!
