the term "racial discrimination" shall mean any distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference based on race, colour, descent, or national or ethnic origin which has the purpose or effect of nullifying or impairing the recognition, enjoyment or exercise, on an equal footing, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural or any other field of public life. '[1]

So then the UN is saying affirmative action laws promoting one or more race over another are government forced racism. Why isn't the NAACP or any other racist group trying to stop affirmative action? I'm sure the KKK would lend them a hand to see the end of it.

I think i'll stick to how i define racism not what someone put in a book. I can think for myself and Webster or Meriam or who ever can use whatever definition they want.

How fun, now instead of talking about the historical realities now you're talking how people of colour are currently strugling. Of course this has nothing to do with the subject of the racist t-shirt, but hey, it's all about moving those goal posts!

as usual charles you're way off the mark and made that post into something it wasn't! dudley got it right. did you fail to notice that i highlighted the reason why a new school is being requested? also, all of the points made in the article came from the coalition of african canadians. furthermore, everyone has a choice when it comes to the issues mentioned above, regardless of skin color, etc. so it's the white persons fault that someone chooses to use a gun? it's the white persons fault when anyone drops out of school?

i posted that so the people who had brought it up would know the actual truth behind it. furthermore, you went waaaaay off topic about this t-shirt thing long before i did. you began preaching long before i did because i stated that i didn't see where the racism was coming from...i still don't because i think it was a comparison to a politician. guess i just don't think along the terms of racists and don't seek to see the racism behind every little thing. wouldn't it be great if we all did??!! i simply continue to defend my opinion, which i'm entitled to do after you've nit picked it and chosen which individual words you wish to attack.

i'll say it again, go preach to the rap and hip hop artists if you find racism so offensive. as a caucasian who isn't racist i'm tired of constantly being lumped into the same categories when there are black people who are more guilty of racial slurs and segregation! sarabara24 you can go on and join him outside snoop dog's house...i suppose "the white man" wrote his lyrics too right?!

I don't know his name he looks almost exacley like George..I think Obama looks more like Joe Camel...

I think what ron paul said is that we should not have gone to war over slavery. we were the only country that had a civil war. we could have bought all the slaves freedom and released them in the north. oh, and I see you are still afraid to post on my economy in the south thread. seems that you love to talk a lot of trash about things you know nothing about, but when presented with facts, you run and hide.

He argued that the first thing that a person notices about another individual when they see them is the color of the skin, and that right there is racism
----------------------------
well you and your professor are both wrong
noticing differences isn racist, attacking or making someone feel inferior because of those differences makes u a racist
we would all have to be blind to not notice the differences in eachother
thats just stupid to assume that because we notice things that we are automatically racist about it
racism isnt based on how many differences you notice in another person, it is based on how you use those differences to manipulate or demean the other person

ive seen that barack guy , he doesnt resemble a monkey to me , i dont and havent noticed any behavioural patterns that could be associated with monkeyhood.

using the term that george bush was portrayed as a monkey so why cant we portray obama as a monkey is childish and well just ignorant

for 50 tshirts he was prepared to attack a person , whether he thought he was being funny or just was a racist isnt really an issue anymore,
the act is done and over, the only thing left to decide is his motivation, since he spent his own money , and was giving the proceeds away , money wasnt a big motivation id assume, so starting a bunch of crap for nothing but attention was his motivation id say

for all we know that hillary thought up the idea and he did as he was told

hey I work with a guy that is 5 foot 20 inches tall (6'8") and oddly enough before even noticing his race I thought to myself "damn you're tall" . Is that racist too?
Racism is illogical but so appearantly are many of the people looking under their beds for the "racist boogeyman".

Has anyone else noticed that Obama seems to have the sense to find this whole issue beneath him even commenting on. Might want to take a cue from his display of intelligence rather than scream "oppression".

^^^well put looneytunz^^^

i had commented before that barrack obama had the grace and dignity to pick and choose his battles. i would imagine that perhaps he had taken it as a politician joke rather than a racist one since it was done to the current president. he knows that by putting himself in the position he's going to have people who mock and disagree with him more so because of politics and not race. knowing to pick your battles is a great trait.

Sorry to interrupt your Ron Paul love song, but he did in fact say that the civil rights movement was a bad thing. As for being the only country that had a civil war, no you certainly were NOT the only country that had a civil war.

Oh you mean a civil war over slavery? That would be because the great Southern states you love so much were willing to kill their own country men to maintain their freedom to own other people, as is readily apparent if you read the documents in which they declared independence.

As for your "economy in the south thread" I actually don't know what the hell you're talking about, but I'm certainly never "afraid" of an argument. maybe "bored of people who don't know a damn thing making absurd claims about the economy" would be a better descriptor.

as usual charles you're way off the mark and made that post into something it wasn't! dudley got it right. did you fail to notice that i highlighted the reason why a new school is being requested?

Yes African immigrants are struggling in the Toronto area.

also, all of the points made in the article came from the coalition of african canadians. furthermore, everyone has a choice when it comes to the issues mentioned above, regardless of skin color, etc. so it's the white persons fault that someone chooses to use a gun? it's the white persons fault when anyone drops out of school?

I'm guessing you don't know much about sociology or the reality that when born into poverty with low chances of social mobility, a person regardless of race is much more likely to indulge in criminal activity.

i posted that so the people who had brought it up would know the actual truth behind it.

You posted it because you're trying to drag this into a retarded Canada vs USA thread.

furthermore, you went waaaaay off topic about this t-shirt thing long before i did.

Yes discussing the history of American racism and its use of the term Monkey for black is obviously off topic when discussing an American using a monkey to describe a black man.

Also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tu_quoque

Tu quoque (Latin for "You, too" or "You, also") is a Latin term used to mean an accusation of hypocrisy. The argument states that a certain position is false or wrong and/or should be disregarded because its proponent fails to act consistently in accordance with that position; it attempts to show that a criticism or objection applies equally to the person making it. It is considered an ad hominem argument, since it focuses on the opposite party itself, rather than its positions.

you began preaching long before i did because i stated that i didn't see where the racism was coming from...i still don't because i think it was a comparison to a politician.

So you cant be racist towards a politician. Alright I see were being reasonable here.

guess i just don't think along the terms of racists and don't seek to see the racism behind every little thing. wouldn't it be great if we all did??!!

It would be better if you didn't defend the obvious racism of others.

i simply continue to defend my opinion, which i'm entitled to do after you've nit picked it and chosen which individual words you wish to attack.

LOL if you're posts didn't have logical errors large enough to drive large trucks through it wouldn't be so damned easy.

your right it was a comparison to a politition.....a very racist comparison to a black politition. No it would not be great if everyone ignored blatent racism and ignorance the way you do, it would be complete $hit actually, the world needs some compasonate people out there.

i'll say it again, go preach to the rap and hip hop artists if you find racism so offensive. as a caucasian who isn't racist i'm tired of constantly being lumped into the same categories when there are black people who are more guilty of racial slurs and segregation! sarabara24 you can go on and join him outside snoop dog's house...i suppose "the white man" wrote his lyrics too right?!

Actually I do find some rap music to be racist and offensive that is why I do not buy their albums or listen to their music. If there was a forrum on here about are the rap artists racist I would comment on that also. Bottom line is the question was is the shirt racist, YES it is. If you really want to maintain the argument that you had no idea about the monkey comparison then fine but I don't by it. And if you really didn't know then maybe you should go read something and educate yourself a little. If we want to start a dicussion of all other things racist than be my guest. I never once said that racism was limited to blacks being compared to monkeys, or even to blacks in general. And you completly missed my point, but that seems to be a habbit of yours.

Who is curious George ....??
I googled it up but no image appears .......

I have a strange sense of humour you know......reading this thread I understand that old Dubya was likened to that monkey but nobody cared enough to take up for him and object ....?? Thats soooo sad that it made me laugh .
So the point of all this being what ? He behaves like a monkey and Obama looks like one ??? If monkeys are typically linked to AA .............then its racist........

Some viewer's kid likened him to the same on the Limburgh show....(whatever that is) in March .Limburgh apologised .

To the lady who was saying that black players are abused in Europe .
Not any more in places like France or Britain and it used to be the odd nutcase that you wouldn't hear in a crowd .It does happen in Spain and Italy pretty badly .They throw banana skins and make rude noises each time that player touches the ball. The Spanish manager has also said some real dicey things. The EFA objected most strongly .
The way the Spanish are abusive.......you can hear it properly because they all seem to be chanting it loud and clear.

.........but they call Argentine players Indian and chant that at them so...........what can you say. They must be shallow people. One of my fave players was called Redondo and they were abusive to him..He is Argentine and the son of a doctor. He is tall and very European looking albeit Latin looking.

which was pointed out by the canadian afro society and not a racist group. and wtf are you talking about trying to make this canada vs the usa?? i didn't bring up the toronto issue, simply corrected the assumption people made by using ACCURATE and LEGITIMATE facts.

I'm guessing you don't know much about sociology or the reality that when born into poverty with low chances of social mobility, a person regardless of race is much more likely to indulge in criminal activity.

we all have the same options and opportunities. you even pointed out that regardless of a persons race they're more likely to do criminal activity if they're in poverty. everyone has a choice. i know plenty of people who grew up in severe poverty and they made the choice not to induldge in criminal activity.

And you completly missed my point, but that seems to be a habbit of yours

seems to be a habit of yours also. you said that article was written by "the white man" when it wasn't...the stats came from the afro canadian group. who missed the point that time!?! and how is thinking or seeing people in this world the same so that i do not define people by color, ethnicity or religion, etc., ignorant? isn't that how it's supposed to be? so now because i thought of barrack obama as a politician as opposed to a black politician, racist? that doesn't even make any sense! isn't the whole issue is that every group wishes to be treated the same and with equality? you just proved my point!

i'm done with you 2....you're idiots who read one sentence and nitpick it rather than read the entire post and general message. learn to debate properly, research your topic and then perhaps you can actually debate in a proper manner with me!

^^ I have heard them refer to some of the more obviously "mixed"-looking players from Latin America as "mestizo", but surely they don't call a player who is "European looking...Latin-looking" an "Indian". I can't see how they could have wanted to call Fernando Redondo an Indian (if that's who you're talking about--- transfered from Real Madrid to AC Milan in 2000 , retired a few yrs ago??). To me he didn't look "mixed".

I don't think they dislike Latin American players over there at all, it's just that some of them may make fun of mixed or black ones, unfortunately. After all whatever in Latin America that IS "Latin" about it (culture, linguistic base, religion, etc) comes from Europe. So why would they have anything against any of that over there in those parts of Europe? I think if they called a player "indio" or "mestizo" or something like that, it would not be because he looked like a Spaniard, or an Italian, but because he looked "mixed" ; like some (but of course not all) of the peoples from the Latin parts of the Americas look.

In Spain sometimes some of them can still be a bit arrogant about that sort of thing, and sometimes they don't like the way Mexicans speak Spanish either (to say nothing of Puerto Ricans and other islanders...). But in fact that whole part of the Americas ("Latin") only got that name from a European, Napoleon, when he named it Amerique Latine in order to differentiate it from the English-speaking part basically (ie, the US).

As for the racism against black players (whether from Africa or from the Americas), sadly yes there have been incidents like you've mentioned, the bananas and so forth. I've seen it in Italy as well. Far too much .. The Spaniards, conquistadors and colonizadors, in Latin America left behind their imprint of "castas" and racism in their part of the "new world" -- as you can tell if you look at all of the different labels for people in Latin America. For example, those who were born in Latin America and were clearly primarily European were like one "caste" (so to speak) , criollos; those who were born in Europe and then came to Latin America (peninsulares) ; those who were born here of a "mix" between a native and a European (mestizo); European mixed with black African (mulatto); or someone who was already "mestizo", or who was Indian, who then mixed with black African (zambo), and all the way "down" to black African (slave, or freedman).

Yes its him. He is very tall and European looking .We read here that thats what they call Argie players even though Redondo is not mixed .Certain ones are mixed with Indian but its not too obvious.Looking at the Spanish and Italians in general....they can be pretty dark as in olive......short too.

If a WASP type goes to Spain.............they give you the dead eye as well...lol............particulary in the none touristy places. Its not a one off either. My girlfriend is Eurasian...English and Asian so she is tall and olive. They would serve her first or let her cross or stop the car to let her cross........and proceed to look daggers at me .Its the same with most blonds. They react favourably only to olive skinned caucasians -they seem to think they are all Spanish even if they are not .They tolerate WASPS...lol..........and are verbally racist (according to reports) to blacks

Italy is noisy.........lol.......very short and dark down south .Fairer up north .Beautiful houses on the inside but very ordinary outside .Girls go out looking like they have walked off the cat walk.Tons of perfect makeup and designer clothes . Smoke too much..they have an obsession with blonds.....lol......but they still think the same as Spanish......if you are olive skinned caucasian be you Persian,Arab or anybody like that.....they speak to you in Italian. If you are blond.........they think.........he's foreign.

Beautiful history though.Unbeatable .

^^ That sounds about right, yes... particularly in non-touristy spots. Out of curiosity how were you treated in Italy? Kind of hard though to tell who's a WASP unless he or she's very obvious (very blonde or something, or very tall, lol) as the "looks" can vary a lot in these countries depending on region or just......individual genes I guess. I know in Italy, where we're from at least, they're not that crazy about Germans, but, other than that.... ??

Norman acknowledged the imagery's Jim Crow roots but said he sees nothing wrong with depicting a prominent African-American as a monkey.

Norman acknowledged the charged history of the "monkey" association, but said, "this is 2008. This is not 1941 in Alabama, so get over it."

He knew exactly what he was doing....

Notorious in Marietta as a provocateur, Norman has sparked protests before with the intemperate slogans he displays on signs in front of Mulligan's. "No habla Espanol — and never will," was one. "I wish Hillary had married O.J." was another.

Simply a pattern of behavior for this insensitive redneck jerk!

I only made that comment as a joke in respnose to your comment that the white man is not inforcing segregation. The white man CREATED segregation. So I will retract that comment then if it ment that much to you. I am not saying anyone should be defined by color, ethnicity, religion ect and i think it is fantastic if you don't. But you are ignoring the fact that not everyone feels the same way you do. It is not that you see obama for his political status rather than for his color, that IS how it is supposed to be. But the fact of the matter is a racial act was made against him and you feel it is better to turn the other way and ignore it. Yes they want to be treated as equal, as they should be, I don't believe that racist slurs are part of being treated equal.

haha if I am so bad at debating than why are you the one leaving? I just voice my opinion as you do, I have never claimed to have any facts just opinion. but good riddence anyway.

Art is in the eye of the beholder. I think its funny... isnt it saying even a monkey can be president? Someone help me out here.. what do they find offensive about that? Is Mr. O. so paranoid and self centered to think everything any of us say or do... is personally against him? Does he want to play the victim card that badly??? Maybe Id better go back and look at it more closely and I will see what youre seeing.

Why are you guys calling each other names just because we all dont think like you do? I just dont get it.

side note: Those of us from Alabama wont take offense to that. But, only the first time you say it. ::smile::

Bill Cosby is a black man, and he doesn't look like Curious George.
Al Sharpton is a black man, and he doesn't look like Curious George.
Snoop Dogg is a black man, and he doesn't look like Curious George.
Mike Tyson is a black man, and he doesn't look like Curious George.
Barack Obama is a black man, and he looks like Curious George.

I first noted the Obama/Curious George resemblance when it was observed by a child too young to be "racist" - but also too young to have picked up the societal filters we adopt to prevent us from pointing out such things...

The shirt itself is not racist. Clearly, the bar owner is.

I have not heard Obama nor anyone from the campaign address this, it really should have been a non issue, but you know how it is with the media.

This really detracts from the real issues facing our country and the rest of the world.....high food and gas prices, high unemployment, the war, devasting earthquake in China and cyclone in Myanmar, and so on.

Anway, he is facing a possible lawsuit from the owners of Curious George.

Do all the comedians in the world take out extra insurance or find a good lawyer ?
It really should be a non-issue. Exactly who is protesting? Hummm?

Good Lord... cant we all just get along? ? ? If we were all the same color...what would we be fighting about? Answer THAT one.

Thats a great topic for a new post/thread.
