I proofread and edit my posts a few times if they are long in length (more than one paragraph).

I think correct spelling and good grammar are necessary for ordinary communication, but not to an extremely high level. I don't mind if people make grammatical mistakes that involve fairly technical rules of grammar (such as split infinitives or properly using conjunctions) at an ordinary level, but in some areas, such as professional writing and communication, people should not make these mistakes. I cringe if I see an Academic, Lawyer, Journalist or Politician make stupid errors in spelling and grammar, but if Joe Smith on the street makes them, I am not overly worried. The main problem with bad spelling and grammar is it hinders communication and makes the message being communicated hard to understand, whatever the context. Good writing has excellent grammar and spelling, and is also clear and easy to understand. But it doesn't focus microscopically on details regarding obscure grammatical points.

I think that correct spelling, grammar and punctuation are essential in business to project a professional, efficient and trust inspiring organisation but when it comes to personal correspondence, it's okay to misspell (God how DO you spell misspell???? ) and use incorrect grammar and tenses etc.

In chatting online, to me speed is much more important than accuracy, ie I would much prefer a fast fluent response that is inaccurate or unpunctuated, than a belaboured, slow, perfectly spelt and grammatically correct response that I have been waiting for a good 5 minutes for.

However, I will admit that when it comes to reading profiles, I am more impressed by an accurate and well written one than a badly put together and misspelt one. After all, your profile is the first thing that people judge and see you by on these sites so if you can't make an effort to get it right when you have all the time in the world to prepare it, what does it say for the rest of your standards????

By the way I have no idea of how to spellcheck on this site so please forgive the irony of anything I have spelt incorrectly in this post....
