I think when we can't help anymore because we may incur trouble then we spiral out of control. I thinks it's great you took her somewhere safe.

I think my gas thingy is on the left...ya, that's right. Heck, after using my Dads truck I'm goofed up! LOL

Kudos!

Nice thing to do, but there were so many signs that she was trouble. No normal adult has not one phone number committed to memory. Phone books and information are always available if you cannot remember a number, the fact that she knew their address but not a cell or home phone is a major red flag. She easily could have called a friend or family member while you chivalrously waited by her side. She's damn lucky you're not a psycho and you are lucky her and the BF did not have a robbery planned. The pimp mobile should have been a major heads up to you.

Driving a Ford Taurus that just happened to have a navigation system was a nice if not miraculous touch to the tale.

What a great story!!! People like you restore my faith in humanity. The other day I was driving in a different town in the middle of a job I was doing to help a friend, and I got a flat tire. It was cold out, and I wasn't wearing warm clothes. Within 10 seconds of pulling over, two guys pulled up behind me and changed my tire for me. One guy gave me his jacket to wear and they both cracked jokes and made me laugh until the ordeal was over. Who knew being rescued in an emergency situation could actually make your day!!! I love these kinds of stories.

OP that's a sweet story.

Too bad you weren't there when my car broke down at a gas station. The guy who offered me a ride wanted something in return (he was playing with his condoms), after I had given his license plate info to a friend when he had offered to give me just a ride. I said, I think not, I'm going to the bathroom and I'll be right back out.

He left.

I was driving an unreliable car to see my dad who was hospitalized 4 hours away. The car overheated halfway there. So I called my brother who was living with my dad and they drove 2 hours back to my dad's place (seems they forgot to tell me he was feeling better and out of the hospital).

Then I took a train home.

So, op, yeah...you're one of the good ones.

Congrats.

My car only had 40 miles left on it, so I needed to stop for gas. Not that I was 40 miles away, but I didn't want to wake up and have 20 miles worth in the tank.

Naturally I pulled my car to a pump, got out and saw the fuel door was on the other side of the car. So I did a huge U turn, got out of my car.

So, your car tell's you how many miles to empty and doesn't have an arrow to what side the filler cap is on?

Maybe his gas gauge doesn't work and he has to keep track of miles?. hey things like that happen here in the ghetto.
I think that old girl 32 did you say? She sounded like a nit wit! You went way out of your way and that is kinda refreshing when most can't be bothered to help nit wits these days!

Wow that was the most interesting post I've read yet. I just thought, what a good thing that I don't hang out with guys who listen to rap music. You sound like a hero.

I have to say i agree wholeheartedly with those who commend you for your actions.

Perhaps with hindsight you yourself could have asked for a bit more proof of ID from her for your own safety but that doesn't take away from what you did.

I once got stranded at a motorway service station when my car died and i was 200 miles from home. My then boyfriend couldn't come to my aid as he was uncontactable, but the service station staff asked everyone coming in if they were headed my way.

When they found someone who could offer me a lift they took the details of the car make model etc and a description of the driver and myself etc.

I know it still wasn't an ideal situation but desperate measures sometimes make us take chances and that's were this lady found herself-in desperate measures. Sure she could have used the gas station phone, but she was maybe not thinking completely straight because of the situation she found herself in and how nice that a decent member of the human race happened to be around?

And for those castigating the OP if it was your sister, niece or any female member of your family would you prefer that people just declined to help and left her to it or would you be pleased that someone was prepared to "go the extra mile" and help?

Well actually as a woman alone I would have gone back into the station where I had just bought cigarettes and asked to use the phone, not stood on a parking lot and yelled for someone to give me a ride.

Or I might have asked to USE the cell phone.

" I thought, what a good thing that I don't hang out with guys who listen to rap music"

Yes because just listening to rap music makes one an asshole. Well at least you're not judgemental.

I have read some of the most asinine arguments against the Op choosing to help this woman in her time of need. To call them silly would be an understatment.

The argument that she "could have been setting him up". SET HIM UP FOR WHAT?.
A woman does not leave an expensive car, to go set someone up driving a Taurus. What would she be expecting to get from the OP? 20 or 30 dollars if she robbed him?. And she would be doing this AFTER approaching 2 other people for help at the gas station, two others who would be able to describe her to the police, after she robbed the Op.

And the argument that her b/f could be following him in the set-up.... Do you people mean AFTER he put the lic. plates of his car on the gas stations camera, and after he got out of his SUV putting himself on said camera, he would then be stupid enough to do something to the Op in a set-up?. Yes a guy driving an expensive SUV have nothing better to do with his time than to set up a 27 year old guy driving a Taurus. Can we say Super paranoid, little boys and girls?????

You fear mongers need to seriously get some help. I am surprised some of you have the courage to actually leave you homes everyday. People get some theraphy for that paranoia that's running so rampant inside your heads.... Trust me, it's not normal.

What the Op did was NORMAL, he saw a person in need and chose to help. That's what most decent people would choose to do. Kudos to him for helping another in need.

Picking apart his story and calling him names for helping, Is only reflecting badly on you, not him. Be cynical all you want, but don't try to force your cynicism down the throats of others..... Keep that Bitter and Jaded crap to yourselves.

"Or I might have asked to USE the cell phone."

A valid point yes, but with the onset of the world and thier wives having cell phones these days many of us would be hard pushed to remember numbers.

Personally, i can only remember my home phone (but i wouldn't be in, i would be stranded at the gas station) or my mums who doesn't drive.

As to remembering someones cell number-never can remember them so i would be pretty much scre**d!

I am a capable, level headed woman who is adept at thinking on her feet and getting herself out of any scrapes i might get into but even i,at times, find myself stumped by situations and to have someone offer help at those times is a godsend and to be applauded.

Well, BV at least we know what causes all of society's problems. Next, they will blame rap and the Hip Hop culture for greenbacks that are only fit to wipe one's a$$ (oops, they already did that when Jay-Z used Euros in his Blue Magic video), ridiculous gas prices and a war fought under false pretenses. Ha! Forget the real reasons. Did you see the 'Whigger' lover comment? That was my personal fav. People. For as far as we've come, we haven't gone far enough.

Re the Opost

Cool story, reminded me somehow of Harold and Kumar and the While Castle!
It could have been a set up.
She could have been a wacko!
I would have found the address for her, called her a taxi and have it take her home. The parents could have paid the cabby! Or called the Police, if she was broke, Police helps on these matters too and I am not sure whether what the dude in the SUV did was actually legal, eg "stole" her cell.

PS.. I loved the part she said she was not into Tacos! Witchy Golddigging Princess (with cool dad, though) who got mistreated by Zuper Azzhole "Prince" (SUV guy). They seem/sound like they deserve each other.

PS. Midwestern mindset? Reminds me of a song by Jim, "Riders on the Storm ....". Sorry I have seen too many American films to have done what the OP did, in the US. In Europe, it is somewhat different.

I have stopped and helped people in distress many times. I guess it's the mid-western mindset. I've always called it "bread upon the waters". Some call it random acts of kindness. I'll always help someone who needs it. But I'll never help the stupid.

That ditz needed to call her parents and wait at the gas station. Asking strangers for a lift, at night? She has no common sense. If I was approached after such a public drama I'd have to be thinking "Badger Game". You also put yourself at risk traveling alone with a stranger. Neither of you thought to talk to the station attendant who could vouched, for you, just in case and could checked up on her later that night.

But I can understand your thought process. Dear Penthouse, I never thought it would happen to me. I helped this beautiful damsel in distress and...

But it worked out, you're safe, she's safe and you have a good story. Just please be careful who you invite into your car when you move out of the mid-west. And if you do make sure a third party is aware of what's happening.

Come on, NickPhilosoph. Don't be like that.

Many people choose not to eat Taco He!!. LOL. I used to work there during my sophomore year in HS, so I can understand why people would elect not to eat there. Fast food is generally unhealthy as well. If you read between the lines, you understood that the OP pictured her at 32, when in fact, she was 39. It could be because she doesn't make a habit of eating things served through a window. Just sayin.

gigglepants asked if I would have his baby, yes... yes I will have your love child! Wow POF really works!!! :-)

To the person that was wondering how much money could a person get driving a Ford Taurus... I went to my friend's house to play pool with her and her boyfriend. I loaned my last $50 for my mother to go shopping with. So I literally had $0 cash on me. I had my credit card (which has fruit loops on it, no lie). I came back from a two month trip to Cali, so money is not abundant right now.

With remembering numbers, I can't remember my mother's cell phone and she's had it 4 years, just the number of the house I grew up in. That she no longer lives in.

The old guy that gave me cash and smacked me on the shoulder, I'm assuming is her father or at least her mother's pool boy that she's having an affair with. With the address to the place, it was extremely easy to remember. Like 500 Oak Street. It wasn't that exactly, but its so easy that I remember it right now. Plus its in my GPS.

The 45 minute drive was FAR out of my way, away from my house.

A connection after the thanks for the lift? Nope. She just thanked me so much, like over and over. When she left my car she never came back.

My Ford Taurus having a GPS. My car does not have a GPS, but rather I have a hand held GPS (Garmin) that I can put in any car. It is really just that simple. Has a suction cup to mount it onto the dashboard.

My car does not have an arrow telling me which side the gas cap is on. At least that I have found. I've had it for the past 18 months and about 6 months ago I found a secret compartment under the arm rest. Not even the previous owner knew the compartment was there!

As for how many miles my car displays that it has. It is sometimes really inaccurate, like last night it told me I was down to 89, but then by the time I got home 30 minutes later I had 112 and no I didn't stop at a gas station.

Actually now I realize that when my car was in the shop (UPS truck hit me) and I was using my step dad's car to go pick it up. His car started smelling like maple syrup and smoking! I was stuck at a 4 way of a 6 lane avenue. Two people sprang to help me. One was the employee of Ace that did everything he could do to help when he got off work. Turns out it was a busted hose and all the liquid in the hose cooked on the engine resulting in the syrup smell. Paying it forward without realizing it?

Finally, to the person that made the Dear Penthouse comment. Unfortunately I'm not like that, but its funny though :-) Plus she was far far out of my league, so much that it would be a turnoff. I'd just fall into the best friend catagory, well no, I'd fall into the thanks for the ride catagory.

For years I chose not to eat at Taco Bell and my best friend worked there for 8 years from HS- until he got a different job. I never once ate there, even with him offering tons of free food. The only thing he got me to eat was Chaco Tacos. I don't make fast food a habbit though. Just when picking up strangers at gas stations.

The woman did look very healthy though. Despite the cigarettes. I could tell she was really jones-in' for a smoke thought :-) She accepted not smoking in my car... and at the gas station.

Man... why does everyone mock me with gigglepants? I've already chose a username that is silly and weird... just use that.

Anyway, you shouldn't think in terms of leagues... I know it's hard and even I am cursed with that thinking sometimes... but, you must press on and show those out-of-leaguers what you're made of...

Also, the reason your 'miles to empty' thing fluctuates like that, is because the computer is using your current consumption rate, speeds, distances to stops, ect to calculate that number... that's why it changes when you get back in and start it up later.
