Awesome story, I loved the ending too. Hopefully she learns her lesson and doesn't marry him.

One begins to become jaded when they see so few people willing to make themselves useful, it's good to see there are some good folks left. Your kindness will revisit you when you need it the most, OP. Good luck and happy trails.

Curious she asked YOU for identification, instead of you asking her. And asking for references before putting her precious ass in your car? Unbelievable.

The extent of my generosity would have been giving her a quarter for a phone call. Do gas stations have phone booths in your state?

True or not, it was a great story

My life is better for having read it.

But am I the only one who would really like to know how much you were handed?

I believe it, why do the nice guys always end up as friends, while women keep going back for more abuse from thier jackass boyfriends? Makes you wonder doesn't it? I think the only answer I can find from women, is they like a challenge and nice guys aren't challenging enough for them, until they take any more B.S.(hopefully) they change, but by then they have so much emotional baggage, we bock and run like hell and now we're jerks too...oh well, that's life...

32 is too old for a night club? LMFAO!!!!!

When I was about 22 I had a penthouse apartment in London. About 2am one morning I hear someone trying to bash my front door down. I get out of bed to investigate & it was a woman. I open the door & ask just WTF she thinks she is doing. First words out of her mouth as she pushes past me were "Sorry, but I need to jump off your balcony"

Hang on a minute there lady, we're 180 ft from the ground...& I get between her & the door to the balcony. She starts ranting about her no good husband etc & I'm coming up with everything I can to talk her out wanting to jump.

I'm running out of ideas & realise that a dead, flat body is going to attract the wrong kind of attention suddenly say "Just think of the damn mess you'l make hitting concrete from 180 ft up"

Her: I'm not worried about the ****ing mess! I'll be dead!

& thats when I came out with:
"You might not be worried about the damn mess, but what about the poor **stard that has to scrap your sorry carcass off the concrete you thoughtless ****ing ****"

Yeah, not one of the greatest lines I ever came out with, but it stopped her in her tracks right then & she said "oh yeah, never thought of that" & calmed down considerably. Gave her a cup of coffee, called her kid who lived nearby to come get her & that was that.
Some misguided fools have said I was a hero for that, the reality is I didn't want to have to explain a dead body to the cops....

Kudos to you OP for helping a woman in need....I know if I was the stranded woman I would pray for nothing more than to meet a man like you who would just help with out trying anything or asking for anything....There are angels in disguise and you are one of them ...Karma will come back to you .....

I didn't have an opinion on whether the story is true but one thing stands out as not being so credible: That she found your address by looking up your license plate number. Even cops can't do that without a valid reason - as part of an investigation - otherwise they get into BIG trouble (my sister is a cop, she'll verify this). So, I have to wonder how this woman, who seems to have little going for, her has this information at her fingertips.

Now the cynic in me comes out to say that there is nothing so heroic about the OP's actions, if true. Sure, it was a nice act on his part (if true) but there are those who perform similar acts on an almost daily basis, without mention, and without calling attention to themselves. The only thing that sets them apart is the lack of fear, or callousness others have that prevent them from doing the same. To me, that's the measure of a great society - the everyday kind of goodness from one to another.

Today, I passed a fellow I'd seen on the street many times before. This time, he picked a mostly empty jar of peanut butter from the trash, wiped the sides with his fingers, and ate what he could get from it. Golly gee, this kind of messed me up so I gave him a few dollars and urged him to get something decent to eat (he said he was going to get a bag of chips and a Hostess pie...and I fought my compulsion to tell him that would not be decent). Far from heroic, I think I did it more for myself, that I didn't want to believe that this is the world I live in. I've given rides, money, food, a sympathetic ear, I hold open doors for women and men, I've fixed cars, helped neighbors break in to their homes when locked out, and stuff I'd be hard-pressed to recall (like that time I jumped down onto the train tracks to retrieve an old man's hat that had blown off). For money? Nope. For fame? No. To impress women? Nuh-uh. Just because.

Thumbs up to all you folks who are helpful every day just because that's the way you are.

Umm, what??? In Ohio at least you can walk into the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, hand $10 or $15 to the person standing behind the desk, sit down yourself at a public accessible computer, and look up ANY license plate number, getting the person's name and address. I'm sure you can do that in other states, too.

Anyway, OP, nice story. I couldn't stop reading until I finished it. A once in a lifetime thing. And it really is a shame that you end up with a good story while some sleazeball ends up with the girl.

That was a story with a nice ending, but you really have to be careful these days - that could have been a set-up!
Nice to know that there are decent guys like you still around - or was this a story just to get the ladies? LOL

BEFORE YOUR HEAD GETS TOO LARGE, ANSWER THIS HONESTLY.

HOW HONOURABLE, PATIENT, HELPFUL, TRUSTING AND "NICE" WOULD YOU HAVE BEEN IF IT HAD BEEN THE GRIZZLED OLD MAN WHO APPROACHED YOU AT THE GAS STATION, (SANS THE POCKET FULL OF CASH) ?

Curious as to why a 39 yr. old woman couldn't have the attendant call a taxi to take her home.

Seems like a lack of common sense or plain stupidity considering she's so untrusting to mooch a ride home.

hey I have to say that is a great story and I am gonna ask did you call a radio show and tell them that same thingbecause I heard before.

Also people it is now hard to know wether or not to help someone because people are out to sue. I read that there was a car wreck and the people in one car was long time co-workers when they had the accident. Well the report was the car caught fire so one of the co-worker help his friend out the car or let them die in the car. The person ended up being paralazed and now they are sueing the person that help them out a burning car where they could have died. Now tell me whats the use in helping some people when you can get sued or charged with robbery / rape or beating someone up and you know you didnt. Be careful is all I am saying. And OP am glad things worked out for you because you know in your heart things could have went very very wrong.

HERE IS THE ARTICLE AND REMEMBER ALL I AM SAYING JUST BE CAREFUL IN WHAT YOU DO OR THIS COULD BE YOU.

Samaritans can be slapped with suits
Tom Ramstack (Contact)

Got a Question?

A recent court ruling in the case of a California woman who tried to help a co-worker in a car wreck shows the need for caution when being a Good Samaritan.
The woman in the car wreck is now paralyzed for life, and her would-be rescuer is facing a lawsuit.
Last week, the California Supreme Court ruled the rescuer could be sued because she was too rough with her co-worker in pulling her out of the wreck. She would have been spared from liability if she were a licensed health care provider rendering emergency medical assistance.
The state's Good Samaritan law normally protects rescuers from liability, but only if they do not make the victim's situation worse.
They are called Good Samaritan laws in reference to a biblical parable about a traveler from Samaria who stopped to assist an injured man lying along a roadway. The laws are intended to reduce the hesitation of bystanders who might worry about getting sued after assisting injured persons.
The ruling in the case against Lisa Torti sends a message that trained medical personnel in California can expect liability protection as long as they are doing their jobs, but other rescuers take a bigger risk.
"This decision is just a reminder," said Adam Winkler, a University of California at Los Angeles law professor. "If you try to rescue someone, you must act with reasonable care."
Ms. Torti was a passenger in a vehicle following behind the car in which her co-worker, Alexandra Van Horn, was riding on Nov. 1, 2004. The car slammed into a light pole at 45 mph.
Ms. Torti said in a deposition she saw smoke and liquid coming from one of the vehicles and was concerned the car was about to catch fire, prompting her to pull Ms. Van Horn from the wreckage. Other witnesses said they saw no smoke or liquid.
Ms. Van Horn's lawsuit says the rough handling by Ms. Torti injured the victim's vertebrae and left her paralyzed.
The California Supreme Court's ruling said Ms. Torti handled Ms. Van Horn "like a rag doll."
The court said no one is required to render aid to an injured person. "If, however, a person elects to come to someone's aid, he or she has a duty to exercise due care," according to the ruling written by Justice Carlos Moreno.
"The decision is also consistent with the trend of expanding liability to people or companies that do things negligently," Mr. Winkler said.
Good Samaritan laws vary from state to state, but all of them offer some degree of protection from liability for well-intentioned rescuers.
Under D.C. law, anyone who helps an injured person without seeking compensation is protected from liability "for any act or omission not constituting gross negligence."
Maryland and Virginia also require rescuers to avoid "gross negligence" in helping injured persons.
There's no risk of criminal prosecution because "There's not any criminal intent there," said Channing Phillips, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Washington.
The California ruling raises the question of whether bystanders might be discouraged from helping injured people in an emergency.
"This decision won't stop people from trying to rescue others," Mr. Winkler said. "It doesn't say that the rescuer is liable. It only says that the injured woman can bring a suit alleging the rescuer acted improperly. Given the emergency circumstances, a jury is not likely to hold the rescuer liable."

For all of you that live in smalltown USA, This might read as a Feelgood story.

but for those of us that live in or have lived in a large citys our radar came on...

Im like Clint Eastwood in the Movie Million Dollar Baby...When he tells that boxer chick...Whats the first rule of boxing-ALWAYS protect yourself.

Im not saying he should not have offered some asistance... like the use of his cell phone so she could called someone that could come help her.

Do you know what punch knocks you out? the one you never saw comming...

He didnt know what kinda relationship she had with this DUDE that left her, he didnt know if dude was comming back, or was "good guy" willing to deal with Dude when he turned into pissed off dude? or worse Gun-weilding dude

Sometimes the Ref is in the Fix..

There are so many instances where good guy helps Lady, takes her some where, and there is dude with a couple of friends...ready to bump on your head and take everything you got. its called Sucker Punching you. Guess why?

Help, but watch your back.
