| Drive 10 extra minutes to avoid $1 toll? Posted: 8/16/2008 3:49:07 PM | | Beautiful. I don't have toll roads , but whatever makes you smile. Once the road is paid for the tolls should be removed right? Wasn't that the original idea behind this. Now its just another tax grab. | |

| Drive 10 extra minutes to avoid $1 toll? Posted: 8/16/2008 5:13:59 PM | I do it EVERY TIME I can -- I am NOT rich, but lucky enough to live a a fairly well-to-do area. We pay more taxes, but if we get a new road in our area , it's a toll road. They even change roads we have ALREADY paid for with taxes -- into toll roads. Then they UPPED the tolls on the toll roads -- to pay for OTHER roads areas with lower AVERAGE incomes. I'm ALREADY taxed into oblivion, so NOT going to pay tolls for that!
When I get to the last toll free exit of our main tollway 190 -- I'm on to the side road for FREE. Lots of other people do it too. Whenever it's not commuter rush hour, you can see almost ALL the cars headed down the side roads, while employees sit in the toll booths collecting their pay.
I can take the 190 toll road to my friends houses, and it will cost about $5.00 for tolls round trip. I measured the difference in distance --- and I could save a whopping 4 miles by taking the &&*#!!*% toll road. (My car gets 28 mpg).

I wasted something like $10 once driving back and forth trying to get where I was going. I ended up at Logan airport. You got to pay a bundle to get to Logan. Then they make you pay to get out of Logan!!!

| Drive 10 extra minutes to avoid $1 toll? Posted: 8/17/2008 7:10:39 PM | No, I mean the 190 -- outside Dallas, TX. aka the GEORGE BUSH Tollway.
I guess they named it after him, since it is so unpopular.
I swear, they have a toll booth every 2 mi. at $.75 a pop!
They are extending it onto a street in my town that was NOT a tollroad before -- I already paid for it, too.
I have a toll tag on my car. I got an e-mail last week from the Turnpike Authority saying I hadn't used it in over 6 months. Wondering if I was dead, maybe? If I croaked, they probably wanted to bill my credit card for the transponder before my will was probated?

| Drive 10 extra minutes to avoid $1 toll? Posted: 8/25/2008 5:41:52 AM | Congratulations on finding a way to "Stick it to the Man."
However, have you ever considered the fact that part of the reason they put tolls on certain roads is done so in order to maintain the highway system. I know we don't like to pay taxes, but I'm guessing you like your car and you like your roads to be in great shape, but damn those taxes.
I guess that if your going to continue to "stick it to the man," that is fine, but then don't complain when the roads are falling apart or they raise other fees and taxes to make up for the loss income. You know, like a gas tax. I don't think you can avoid that one if you want to continue to drive.

| Drive 10 extra minutes to avoid $1 toll? Posted: 8/25/2008 3:31:54 PM | I'd do it. Not because I'm cheap, but because it's deeply satisfying to beat the system. We don't have toll roads in these parts but if they're ever introduced I'll do everything I can to circumvent them. We get taxed to the bone already, what's with the tolls?
Stick it to the man whenever you can!

| Drive 10 extra minutes to avoid $1 toll? Posted: 8/25/2008 3:45:17 PM | | in the uk, we dont have many toll booths, but what we do have range from like $5-$10, i would happily pay $1 or 2, but with ours being so high and our gas being like $8-9 a gallon, i would waste loads of gas avoiding a toll booth just out of priciple of the high price. | |

I would not mind paying taxes if I knew the money was being spent wisely. I never minded before I took a job working for the government and found out hwo much of your hard earned money they waste. Paying people to sit around and play video games and things like that are not uncommon. Most people don't even punch a clock. Some only put in 5-6 hours a day while getting paid for a full 8.

I'd love to figure a way to beat our tolled highway but they photograph your plates entering and exiting, have stiff penaties for covering your plate, and bill you by the kilometer. Oh, and they are in cahoots with the government. They have access to all your personal info from the plate, and if you don't pay the bandits the goverment will not allow you to renew your plates.
Not hard to tell you are from Ontario. That 407 are the biggest bunch of crooks you ever saw. Had an 800 surcharge added to my bill last year, when I went to renew my plates. Strange, as I never took the 407 more than perhaps 10 times the previous year.
Nothing I could do but pay up. never took it again, yet this year had the same amount tacked on! Called them up, they said they would check it out, got a letter saying there was no problems found with my account!
The huge problem, is they can go to the government / court , get this tacked on, with out your knowledge at all. They make a mistake? Too bad sucker, takes years to clear it up, they will fight refunding the money all the way.
If I could find a way to rip this corporation off, would not hesitate one second. To think they use Tax Payed Police, as enforcers ticks me off as well. Have a friend in London, company car, they pay the bill so it means little to him. Police show up at his door, wanting to know why his plate was bent! Guess he had gone through a car wash, corner had been bent on the plate. Cops were making sure he was not trying to 'evade" the Toll charge that here, goes to a foreign owned Corporation.
Road payed for by Tax dollars, sold to a private company, charge ridiculous rates, use courts to "double charge " at will . I prefer the American system, pay as you go. Lot cheaper too, costs if I remember right, 14 bucks to travel across Toronto. Yet can go all the way from Buffalo to New York City on the State through way, for 17 .
