TV provides background noise for me lately. The only stuff I seem to watch lately are the home reno shows. CSI once in awhile but I find it gets boring after awhile. The news is just depressing, stopped watching it years ago. I prefer to pop in dvd's of old shows I like...less commercials and can pause to make trips to the loo.

I watch the comedy and discovery channels mostly.
It's hard to get negative when listening to comedians and learning about nature.

i dont watch the news, because it upsets me to much, every now and then i listen to it on the radio.

i onley have the basic 5 tv channels, and i dont want anymore really.
onley more crap to choose from.
i used to have sky, mainley for the kids, but it keept looseing the picture and all that, so i got fed up with it.
but the kiddies can watch all the music videos on line, so they dont complain.
it would be nice to watch the discovery and nature channels sometimes, but its all on the doorstep, or in books.

No negativeness from tv here, unless it's just a really crappy show/movie.
But stuff that's actually good...makes me feel better.

In answer to the topic question, F*** yes!! Tryin to watch an F1 race is the ultimate endurance with adverts every 10 god dammed minutes. Thats the reason I give up on TV (and F1). I only watch top gear because its on bbc 2 with no adds. Whats up with this, we pay for TV to be entertained, if I wanted to buy something I would be in a shopping centre or surfing the net. When I am watching TV the ONLY thing I want is to be entertained. Some ads are fine but the 20 mins or so of ads every hour is just frustrating thus ruining the whole point in watching TV in the first place. Sky movies may not have ad breaks but dam they are expensive, rather rent DVD or go to cinema.

TVs or games dont affect they way I behave though. I have played some violent games involving decapitation and car jacking since I was 10, but I find doing these things in real life absolutley sick. This also applies to those god dam adds too. Just because an advert makes something sound amazing doesnt mean I will go buy their ****in product. I buy what I want/need, not because someone claims it to be great.

Yes

TV annoys me and manipulates me and I hate that. My TV is simply a monitor that plays back HBO, DVD and High Def content.

I abhor commercials.

I really noticed this last year, when my Yugo of a computer died, and I was stuck with watching TV for a few weeks while the new one was being assembled.

After four years of essentially not watching it, and being on the net almost exclusively, I found it to be a very oppressive media to endure for any length of time.

I had to watch programs when "they" offered them, and I only had "their" perspective on things.

On the net, I could see something and then start to research other aspects of it instantly. Anytime I wanted to see something, it was there for me, at my convenience. There were no interruptions for commercials, and instead of one talking head giving an opinion .....I had thousands of them.

Going back to TV after that type of exposure was a major shock to the system.

It felt a bit like "Big Brother" from Orwell's book, or a shirt I used to wear when I was a teenager that no longer fit me anymore.

I think TV, as we know it, will be dead with the next generation (who grew up with computers and the internet) . It will fold itself into the technology, and in perhaps a decade or so it will no longer be separated anymore.

I think that will be quite a positive thing, if and when it occurs.

I only watch like the 1st 5 minutes of network news to see what I already know happened yesterday on the inter net or if I wanna see what happened last week I read a paper. Tv does come in handy as long as it is hooked up to watch dvds.
I can't wait til Tv goes digital so I will not be able to watch it at all who needs another little black box in their home. Big brother?

If religion is the opiate of the masses, TV is crystal meth.
This resonated with me soooo much. There is only one problem with this. The vast majority of people in the UK, USA and other Western countries watch TV every day. Doesn't that mean we are a nation of crystal meth addicts? People are terrified of crystal meth addicts, as they are so dangerous. What does that say about our society?

I watch it for hours a day, and cannot go out if I'll miss my favourite programmes, of which I have lots. I keep filling up my TiVo, so I cannot just record it either. I'm a slave to my TV. Ironically, when I was 18, I went abroad to study, and didn't come back till I was 22. During that time, I never had a TV, and neither did my friends, and hardly ever watched TV. I'd go months without seeing a TV programme. I never missed it. Not once. Now, I'm addicted. But when I went away for the weekend last year, I didn't miss it again. I just don't seem to need it as much as I think I do.
