Red Deer's next POF meet... thoughts?

Right.

So I was just minding my own business lately when it was made known to me that three separate places in Red Deer want a POF meet. And of course, it almost always comes down to me sorting it out (and fortunately I have had a few good POFers help out - I NEVER forget that).

The three places are all very different venues.

Everyone who has gone to a Red Deer POF meet should be familiar with Wild Bill's. The second place is Cheers North. The third, The Club.

To those who are unaware, Wild Bill's is a sports bar. The staff are great and the location is pretty good. The downside is a lack of an in-house DJ or dance floor, which means one has to be brought in. In the past I helped fund the DJ, but I don't see a point in doing that anymore because I can't (WON'T!) sell tickets to one of these. And selling stuff just takes away from the fun. The first time we did one there I had a few backers which made it OK to fund a DJ. And actually, my contact there hasn't returned my message regarding these issues. My thinking is they don't want to go too far out of their way, or they're just not interested in the competition brought on by the other two places.

Anyway, Cheers North is a live music venue which features a decent dance floor, full DJ capabilities, and they'll give us happy hour prices. It's right close to where Wild Bill's is, so the hotel situation would be similar. And the staff are pretty cool there too. Nice lounge area, a couple pool tables, great food.

The Club is a bonafide night club. In the past I have felt that no one would want to go to a place like this because of the loud music, but this is a different situation. First off, it's a 21+ club (sorry to those few POFers who are 20 and below). The staff really want us to do it there. The manager as well. In fact several of them are POFers, so I'm told. Whether that's a fact or not, I don't know, but I DO know the manager has been interested in our events for many months now. And she is in fact on here. But that's besides the point. They have a VIP area with its own bar, which would be enforced by one of the staff. We'd probably go with a wristband format for this (I have done it before and it went over famously). They basically aim to please in any way they can. Though I haven't actually been there in a couple years (since they changed it a bit), apparently the music format is similar to Bellini's, which ended up being a big draw for a lot of people at the last Wild Bill's event (as well as the Bo's one). The difference is, management at Bellini's, last I heard, haven't got patience for "internet people." Apparently we don't drink. lol. Yeah, ok.

I'm kinda thinking that late July would be a good idea. It gives you guys over two months to flesh out whether or not you can make it or not.

What I'd like to know, whether by replying in this thread or by sending me a personal message, is which place do you think you'd prefer?

Wild Bill's: great staff, good location, no dance floor or in-house DJ, saturday night draft and shot special.

Cheers North: great staff, good location, decent dance floor, DJ (or they'll bring in a different one), nice leather couch lounge area, happy hour domestic beers/drinks.

The Club: eager-to-please staff, central location, club dance floor, DJ spinning top 40 (including country), VIP room. Usually very good drink specials.

Let me know. I'm listening. I want this to be the best Red Deer POF thing I've ever hosted. And it'll be the sixth one I've done.

We attended the party at Wild Bill’s in December and quite honestly, we weren’t too impressed with the venue (the party and the people were GREAT tho!) We stayed over Saturday night also and after trying unsuccessfully to party at a certain venue where a certain DJ was supposed to be playing (I think we had the right place, just a little too early) we ended up at Bellini’s, which we thought was fantastic! Too bad they’re not “internet people” friendly (snooty b*stards ... Bellini’s, not internet people )

That being said, we would definitely be interested in making the trip again if an event was held at a place like The Club (first choice) or Cheers North.

Great ideas Rob!

I'd be slightly more inclined to go (I'd still show up at any venue mind you) if it were held at the Club.

WOOO HOOO RED DEER ROAD TRIP!

Cheers gets my vote.
Cause they're gonna know my name.
And I want a real dance floor.
And in late July there is a real possibility I will be in GP and unable to attend at all, but just in case....

Being a night club and all, technically The Club has a real dance floor too ;)

An upside for Cheers and Wild Bills is the Hotel availability in the area or AT Wild Bills. I never go downtown because there's never enough cabs to get people home, and it ends up being a big problem outside fighting for cabs... that's my 2 cents !

the club sounds good, and as for the date; the end of july is so far off, but why not go for it and set up a pre-party at the same club for june 20. I would bet you could pack the house for both dates. the big citys have lots of things going on and we have so few so 2 partys would be a blast....

I'm in the process of getting the room capacities for The Club and Cheers North.

As it stands, my contact at Wild Bill's hasn't returned my message about the three-location shootout. I know they have been on Facebook SINCE then because I saw an update on their profile. So it can only be assumed that they have opted to not even try to match what The Club and Cheers North have offered.

I'm not profiting from this. That much has been made clear over and over. We're not even ALLOWED to profit from it, if we're advertising it on this site. But when it starts coming out of my pocket while a bar seems to make a tidy profit, I begin to question why I do these at all.

That's why Cheers North and The Club are two attractive locations. They both have great options for us. I just want to make an informed decision.

I'm also starting to wonder if pushing this back to mid-late August might be a good plan? Remember the Kings Head in 2005? That could be a good plan too.

^^ You most certainly do BG!!

Either venue would work for me. I'd rather not the LOUD bar, but whatever comes about, I'll be there!

I LOVE Red Deer parties!!

Or was that pizza, beer and nekkid body?

I always get those mixed up.

It should be known that there has now been a reply from Wild Bill's. Though I haven't dismissed their bar as a future venue for POF meets, it just seems logical, based on POF user feedback, that we go with Cheers or The Club. At least this time around.

In '06 we did this maneuver by going with Bo's instead of Wild Bill's. 270 people showed up. Nowhere to dance, barely move, or anything (and with a staff shortage, hard to get drinks), people ended up at Bellini's. And the last Wild Bill's deal landed a lot of POFers at Bellini's. It also landed me in bed by 3am, which was a first.

So clearly we need to focus on the two venues that seem most interested in catering to the POF type. Dance floor, DJ, drink specials (or just flat-out unbeatable prices), and location.

Someone complained that The Club doesn't have good hotel access. Yeah, if you're crawling out of the bar....... Ramada is a very short cab ride away. And the rest of the south side hotels aren't more than a $10 cabride away.

Cheers North has the same hotel access as Wild Bill's.. just don't call the North Hill Inn asking for a POF group thing. LOL. That might fall on deaf ears.

Anyway, as it stands, I think mid to late August is a good plan.

I haven't seen a big meet in Edmonton or Calgary in ages, and so I feel the need to really get SOMETHING going. If someone would rather make this happen in Calgary/Edmonton, let me know. I'd be TOTALLY open in helping you out in lining it up.

I vote for late August (only because I have four days off over the Labour Day weekend).

And yes, it actually IS all about me.
