| Anybody been to or know much about Prague? Posted: 5/24/2008 2:45:27 PM | Hello everyone!
I was wondering if any of you had ever visited the city of Prague in the Czech Republic, I am thinking of booking up a weekend break there and have been googling and looking it up, I have found the usual tourist board/accomodation websites but not many in depth reviews on the city, its attractions, culture, nightlife, affordability etc etc and I was looking for others opinions/views on the city?
I know this thread would probably be better suited in the 'Travel forum' but since I know many of the regulars on here, I would be interested to know your views!
Thanks for any help, info or guidance you can offer!
Cheers.. | |

Possibly because it's a long way from Camberley?

| Anybody been to or know much about Prague? Posted: 5/24/2008 3:16:45 PM | Prague was one of the best weekends ever....stayed at the Hotel Ariston (3 tram stops from Wencezlav Square) and really clean and decent....fab 24 hour bars over the road with cheap beer too!!! IT is an amazing ang quite safe city (stay to main streets) but watch your bags in a crowd or on the trams (pick-pockets are very good)....I love Prague and it has amazing nightlife too...soo clean, friendly and reasonably priced! Hotel Ibis Wenceslav is also great hotel right in the centre.....have fun and have a beer or two for me

| Anybody been to or know much about Prague? Posted: 5/24/2008 3:38:12 PM | Prague is very expensive compared to 5 years ago. Don't carry too much cash on you. Watch yourself at cash machines and never pay by debit/credit card as you could have them raped (and your bank account.
If you are going to go within the next two to three months, Phone your bank and tell them you are going, send them a letter by recorded delivery advising them of the same, pop into a branch and advise them of the same, phone them again to confirm arrangements, send them a second letter by recorded delivery asking if they received the first letter and asking them to confirm that they understand the fact thet you are going abroad and acknowledge this fact and have placed a note on your account and have activated your account for use abroad. Phone the manager of your local branch to arrange a meeting with him to discuss the above and when you are happy with all the arrangements and the bank have confirmed that you will have access to your money whilst in the Czech Republic, go on holiday to Prague. On your retun, send a letter by recorded delivery asking why your card was cancelled by the bank the day you arrived in Prague and you had no access to your money despite letting the bank know by a number of different confirmed means. Do not expect a reply/response unless you go on Watchdog.. even then.... Tough luck. Enjoy your trip.

| Anybody been to or know much about Prague? Posted: 5/24/2008 4:20:51 PM | | Prague is soaked in culture, just by walking around you can see this in every building and every roof top, the builings and Architecture are amazing, very freindly and very proud people of there past. Night life is good with pubs and clubs open 24hrs a day seeing groups of people stagger out from a club at 9 in the morning to grab a coffee and chill in some street bistro is not unhared of. But like posters have said just watch for pick pockets and so on. I found it to be fairly cheap. If you book you will enjoy. | |

| Anybody been to or know much about Prague? Posted: 5/24/2008 5:56:01 PM | Beautiful Prague is immersed in history and fantastic buildings and Art. it is unfortunate that is now getting a name for Hen Nights and Stag Parties. The centre of Prague (Praha1 and 2) is now spoilt by rip off mercheants at Bars and restaurants yet the city itself is still fantastic. I recomend a couple of things : Still go there its really Good! Book a hotel away from the centre but near a Metro station Beware of Pick pockets and only use ATMs in the day time. try the local cuisine awy from the city centre- the fruit dumplings and reindeer is really good! Beware of Taxis ripping you off and aways remember to say "reset taximetrer prosim"! when you get in. so you don t get charged a higher tariff!
Dont miss Charles Bridge or the Castle or when your feet give up try a short cruise with Buffet and drinks on the Vitava!

| Anybody been to or know much about Prague? Posted: 5/25/2008 4:33:53 PM | Went there in November 2006, and had a great time. We stayed at the Bila Labut hotel which was around 15 - 20 minutes walk to the Old Town and Wenceslas Square (which is actually not a square at all, and pretty boring!). Apart from that 'square' found it a really pretty city - was easy to walk around but trams fairly cheap tho took a while to suss out where they were going to.
Nightlife good too - we found a couple of good bars near the Old Town and an 80s club near Wenceslas Square and although there were groups of lads and girls out and about, no real problems that we saw.
Food and drink still a bit cheaper than over here, but shop prices for clothes etc pretty much the same as here.
I'd go again, tho probably in spring/early summer, cos it was a bit grim weatherwise when we were there.

| Anybody been to or know much about Prague? Posted: 5/25/2008 7:42:24 PM | Hi Samantha Jayne, I just thought I'd post a reply to your questions about Prague, I was there just about 3 years ago, and I'm sorry but I have to disagree with schmoo and North and say that I found the people very rude and unfriendly. It is, however a gorgeous city and was scorching hot when we went in July. We stayed in a hotel in between Charles Bridge and the Castle, which was a beautiful part of the city. There is plenty to see and do in Prague, but for eating out I noticed that if you look at the menus in the most touristy areas they are pretty much all the same and quite expensive. I did find that if you go into the sidestreets and away from the big squares that you get more diverse cuisine and better prices/quality. One final word of advice, if you're going for the clubbing, watch out for your money being stolen, credit cards cloned etc. If, on the other hand you are going to absorb the culture and scenery, I do think it's quite a coupley place and going with a friend rather than a partner, I did feel I was in a minority, when seeing all the lovey dovey couples , particularly in the evenings. Overall I'd say, yeah it's nice, but in my opinion it's a bit over-rated. It's much like any other pretty european city. I, for example much preferred Stockholm, which, incidentally isn't as expensive as people think! However, if you do decide to go, then Bon Voyage ! | |

| Anybody been to or know much about Prague? Posted: 5/26/2008 1:10:39 AM | Hi Samantha Jane,
Prague is a beautiful city. As you're a little younger than me I can't give an opinion on the nightlife you may wish but, there are lots of young people there. Prices are very reasonable with a three course meal for two at around £20. The sights are just out of this world especially if you go to the cathedral on the top of the mount.
My advice, just go for it!! You won't regret or forget it. Enjoy!!!

| Anybody been to or know much about Prague? Posted: 5/26/2008 1:18:25 AM | I've been twice on tugby tours.
What do I know about Prague?
The Bars are mainly good. Oh and we beat the Czech National Army Team even whilst half drunk.

| Anybody been to or know much about Prague? Posted: 5/26/2008 2:25:20 AM | I have been to Prague many times as have friends who live there. It is a very beautiful city and the people are the same as everywhere some friendly and some not so. Most people in the tourist places speak English or German but if you move away from these areas few people speak anything other than Czech - which is completely incomprehensible.
It depends what sort of holiday you want - if you want to enjoy getting hammered til all hours of the night with lots of English people then its perfect if you go at the weekend. if you want to enjoy a different experience and see the beautiful city and meet Czech people then go during the week. It really is two different cities depending when you go. If you want to see a beautiful city then take a day trip to Cesky Krumlov - that is the most amazingly beautiful place I have ever seen.
As for the comments about pick pockets etc - its no different to any other tourist areas - take sensible precautions and you will be fine.
It is a great place - go for it and enjoy which ever type of holiday you choose.

| Anybody been to or know much about Prague? Posted: 6/21/2008 3:01:29 PM | Prague itself is so beautiful and steeped in history, today sadly it caters for stag and hen parties from the UK, too many sex shows and prostitutes on every corner.
Had a great 5 days there but hated the English laddish stag parties everywhere to be seen.
Cafe, bar and restuarant people are friendly enough, we even found an Irish pub with great food too !!
I mainly enjoyed it but it is too sex orientated now with the "Brits on Tour" brigade taking over.
We saw some great places, Pardabice, the equivalent of our own "Grand National", and the train stopped at a town where there were little plaques on the platform that listed families who were shipped out to Auswitch etc and other neo-nazi gas chamber places where they gassed millions, so very sad, so shocking at the same time.
Prague is so beautiful but be prepared if you go there.......
