| Where to go in Mexico for vacation Posted: 5/24/2008 11:54:33 PM | | I am looking for someplace off the beaten bath, quiet and non touristy. Also, close to or on a nice beach as well as the possiblity of checking out some ruins or doing some other active land activities. I am having a hard time finding a place that isn't a touristy resort or party place. Anyone have any ideas? | |

Do you have a preference to east or west coast? Are you interested in doing the backpacker thing or will there be multiple suitcases? When do you want to go and for how long? Will you travel alone? What are you afraid of? These (and other) questions are important since it's the start of the planning process.
BASIC ideas. East coast - I'd suggest flying to Cancun but going directly to isla Mujeres for a bit then down the coast to Tulum and then over to Merida. West coast - I like Mazunte and Zipolite. From there you can get over to Chiapas, which is really interesting. All of these have a backpacker trail all their own and can be quite affordable.
YES, all of these places can be touristy and party places but that's a personal choice everywhere you go. It's pretty hard not to have that option in Mexico (or the world). I'd agree that if this is your first time doing adventure travel in Mexico, you want to stay on the beaten track a bit. Staying in a small town where you're the lone tourist sounds like fun but usually isn't.
Something else I'd suggest is that you buy a travel guide like "Let's Go" or "Lonely Planet" and read through that a bit. | |

My thought would be that you might find it less than enjoyable, if not. If you're looking for off the beaten path, I suggest that you have more than a Spanish Dictionary because so much of your discovery can be lost in translation.
I say this as a veteran of 40 years travel as a Tour Manager. I have traveled extensively throughout Mexico. You do not tell us enough about your language skills, your experience in travel, and/or your finances, in order to make an educated suggestion. My background of creating travel agendas for people tells me so. Tell us more and maybe we can really be helpful to you in your quest.
Sincerely,
