| Best & Worst Sports Announcers... Posted: 5/26/2008 7:02:11 AM | List off some of the best & worst sports announcers that you have ever heard in your life!!!
I'll get the bad part out of the way.......
I will start it off with Joe Buck. Maybe FOX should have this guy stick to doing MLB Playoff games instead of the Super Bowl.
Remember when David Tyree made the catch of his freakin' life in SB XLII to key that big Giants upset over the Pats? Buck called it like a regular play with NO emotion at all. Get him outta here!
Now the 1 guy that i always enjoy listening to is Gus Johnson from CBS. He does NFL games & March Madness (which is when he's at his best). He always knows when to use great emotions at the right times in key moments of a game.

| Best & Worst Sports Announcers... Posted: 5/26/2008 7:57:16 AM | THE GOOD: Hockey: Pittsburgh Penguins announcer Mike Lange: Comes up with the most hilarious sayings that have nothing to do with anything, when people score: "Ohhhhh scratch my back with a hacksaw"" or "Grandma's going to bingo!"
Also Edmonton Oilers announcer Rod Phillips ... although clearly his best days are behind him, he can make a Nashville/Columbus snoozefest sound like the seventh game of the Stanley Cup finals.
THE BAD: Pierre "it's all about me" McGuire ... has to involve himself in every story "I was in the dressing room" ... "or ... "When I had supper with so-and-so..." He also screams into the mic like we're all deaf. He sounds more like a wrestling announcer than a hockey announcer.
And Sportsnet's Jim Lange .... his deer in the headlights look is just plain creepy.

| Best & Worst Sports Announcers... Posted: 5/26/2008 8:05:03 AM | john madden doing a brett favre game....
"that is just favre being favre"
"that is favre 4 th int this game, but thats just favre being favre"
"look at the way he puts the ball in the running backs stomach"
Brett favre is a football player, look at the way his chin strap flys when he throws the ball"
These are all quotes from madden....
some of my favs..
bob costas, vin scully doing baseball is just awsome

I also like jim nance, speaks well, and really knows what he is talking about...

| Best & Worst Sports Announcers... Posted: 5/26/2008 8:14:00 AM | Absolute worse has got to be John Madden. This guy has a knack for stating the obvious.
"Look at that Al. See, this guy here, the quarterback, threw the ball to this guy here, the Wide Receiver, who proceeded to catch the ball, and that is why they gained yards." Duh.
A few of my favorites are Kevin Harlan (Use to be an announcer for the T-Wolves but now does NFL games and basketball games) for CBS and TNA. The other guy I absolutely love is another local personallity up here in Minnesota by the name of Paul Allen. He is the track announcer for Canterbury Downs but also does Vikings games on the radio. I am not a fan of the Vikings, but listening to this guy call games is absolutely fabulous. Lots of emotion and wonderful description. Just a great announcer.

| Best & Worst Sports Announcers... Posted: 5/26/2008 8:19:06 AM | I love Mickey Redmond. He is a Wings announcer for FSN Detroit. Unfortunately, Mick is fighting Lung cancer for the 2nd time, and his return to the microphone is very questionable. Good luck Mickey, we want you back!!! Some of his many quotes here: "When you get the dog down, give it another kick!" "Keep your sticks on the ice, kids; good things happen" "You can head for your parties! This one's over!" "You go to sleep for a second against these guys -- the red light's on" "It's Five O'Clock on a Saturday" (sung when a goal is scored about 5pm on Saturday game) "You can head for your parties! This one's over!" "Everyone was on their feet screaming cause no fans like seeing fights in the NHL. (A sacastic dig towards the less fighting policies) the list is soooooooooooooo long but my favorite has to be "He couldn't get the puck in the ocean, even while standing on the pier"
He's just a GOOD TIME!!!

| Best & Worst Sports Announcers... Posted: 5/26/2008 8:47:28 AM | I hope you are listing Joe Morgan as a "bad"
I remember a couple of things he said on the same broadcast once that just turned me off him for good. First, he was talking about pitchers and how, "back in the day" (he was referring to the early 70s) guys were signing for $170,000 a year and he actually had the audacity to say "How were they supposed to live off that?" and no, he was not being sarcastic.
The next inning, he was talking about why the Cubs have sucked for so long and blamed it on day games (which really should give them an unfair advantage). He was stating that these poor Cubbies have to "get up at 7 a.m., fight rush hour traffic to get to the ball field, then play ball during the day. That's a tough schedule to deal with." uhhh... yeah Joe. There's about a quarter-billion people in North America who do it every day. Your Cubs have our undying sympathy
|
| Best & Worst Sports Announcers... Posted: 5/26/2008 9:52:22 AM | Joe Morgan is a two MVP as a second baseman-maybe the best second baseman in history...and probably knows a thing or two about how the schedule affects baseball players.
"Your Cubs have our undying sympathy"
huh? Don't remember Joe playing for the Cubs...

| Best & Worst Sports Announcers... Posted: 5/26/2008 10:28:48 AM | "huh? Don't remember Joe playing for the Cubs..."
Thank you for that, Captain Obvious. He was speaking on behalf of the Cubs, that's why I said "Your" Cubs.
You completely missed the jist of my beef. The thing about Joe Morgan is he is so out of touch with the viewers, he doesn't understand how condescending a comment like "They have to drive through rush hour traffic every day" ... or "How can you live on $170,000" can be to the common man/woman.
I could care less how many MVPs Joe Morgan has. He's a terrible commentator. The fact that he was a great player has no bearing on his commentating skills.
Also, the fact that Joe Morgan never played for the Cubs makes him about as much of an authority on how their schedule affects them as me or you. And think about it ... if the Cubs play 100 day games a season, shouldn't they be more adjusted to it than players that play only weekend day games? It makes no sense using that as a crutch. It should be a clear advantage.

| Best & Worst Sports Announcers... Posted: 5/26/2008 11:29:40 AM | he probably has spoken to about a dozen guys who played for the cubs and mentioned the schedule as a hindrance...i imagine - i know he was friends with ernie banks
and the "common" man doesn't have to hit a 100 mph fastball
and i believe he WAS being sarcastic about the money issue in the 70's given the contracts today and it was you-captian oblivious-who missed the point
joe morgan is a tremendously entertaining and informed commentator

What the heck does that have to do with anything?
Joe Morgan isn't commentating to the guy who is hitting a 100 mph. He is commentating to the 100 million slugs who have to get up at 7 a.m and drive through rush hour traffic every day ... and who make far less than the $170,000 that was "nearly impossible to make ends meet with" (paraphrasing) in the 1970s. Getting the picture yet?
"joe morgan is a tremendously entertaining and informed commentator" signed ... Joe Morgan's mom
Joe Morgan is a legendary ball player. But give him a mic and he loses all his appeal.

| Best & Worst Sports Announcers... Posted: 5/26/2008 12:10:23 PM | we can agree to disagree
but this is a man who played in the curt flood era who grew up a black man in texas i gotta think that if you just thought about it for a second you might see my point about his sarcasm now he is broadcasting games where an average second baseman makes 5 million a year
my comment about the average man thing you are on about is this -and i thought it was obvious-again
you state that the average guy has to fight rush hour traffic-yes-agreed-but the average guy does average work-i know-i have a good average job but i am not put upon to do something extraordinary at my job like avoid scott stevens or hit a nolan ryan fastball...get it?
again we can agree to disagree on joe morgan-i love his insights

| Best & Worst Sports Announcers... Posted: 5/26/2008 1:34:06 PM | The best right now in all of sports is Jeff Van Gundy. I love to watch the games he announces.
I know this isn't considered a sport but he WORST of all time has to be Mike Adamle who calls matches for ECW/WWE.

Best: Howard Cosell, Frank Gifford, Don Meredith Worst: Dennis Miller
Yeah Dennis Miller & MNF was not a good combination...at all.
|
| Best & Worst Sports Announcers... Posted: 5/26/2008 3:49:59 PM | I like Jon Madden. I didn't like Dennis Miller on MNF.
When I read the question Bill Walton came to mind as the worst. He calls b-ball games like he's teaching an advanced english course and he's long winded.
The best b-ball commentator was Chick Hearn. I'm not sure if those of you outside of southern California are familiar with him but he called the Lakers games for like...ever. Chick and Stew. Does anyone remember his famous phrase: The jello's jiggling, the butter's hardening...put the kids to bed. Something along that line. It was kinda sad hearing him get too old to call the game. He'd say Shaq when he meant Kobe and things like that. It seemed like the guy called Lakers games until he was dead.

Chick Hearn is legendary, one of the best NBA announcers of all-time. I've also always enjoyed Hubie Brown's analysis. Even though sometimes he will mis-pronounce players' names (he always gets Tayshaun Prince's name wrong lol), he offers great insight on the game.
Madden is seriously the only color commentator that i have seen use the telestrator to highlight food items LOL....ahh Thanksgiving Day game memories.

| Best & Worst Sports Announcers... Posted: 5/26/2008 5:40:56 PM | Used to love Dan Patrick & Keith Olberman together on ESPN. Those guys were entertaining and funny as hell. They were the ones to start the use of humour and catchphrases on highlight shows.
No use for Chris Berman and all of his nicknames. And it is absolute TORTURE to hear "back, back, back.....GONE!" after every damn homerun in the homerun derby.
How about Harry Caray? Now, THERE was entertainment! I'll never forget watching a Cubs game one day, and the camera zoomed in on a young couple kissing in the stands. Harry came up with this gem without realizing it: "Oh, I get it! He kisses her on the strikes, and she kisses him on the balls!". Priceless! It was fun to hear him mispronounce the player's names, too. Galarraga and Grudzilanek (sp?) caused the poor guy nightmares, lol!

| Best & Worst Sports Announcers... Posted: 5/26/2008 5:43:05 PM | | Harry Caray & Steve Stone was the best Cubs broadcasting duo of all-time. It was a very sad day for Cub fans everywhere when Harry passed away. It's an absolute shame that he didn't get to witness the magical home run race between Sosa & McGwire in the summer of '98. | |

| Best & Worst Sports Announcers... Posted: 5/26/2008 5:50:04 PM | | I agree, but it was almost like it was meant to be that year. Almost made you think Harry was up there watching over the Cubs, lol. Did you ever read the book Stone wrote about his days with Harry? What a great read! Wish I could find another copy of it. I lent it out and it never came back. That'll teach me..... | |

And to make that worse, the Cubs soon ended up with Chip Caray, one of the worst broadcasters.
