I re-discovered "My Ding - A -Ling" on the weekend...and love the simple stupidity of the song. Excellent! One of my housemates has tonnes of cheesy and novelty songs. My favourite is probably The Worzels - Combine Harvester.

There's one called "He's turned emo" by a band that I forget the name of but it's on YouTube somewhere.

Don't forget Little Bar of Soap.
I love Sopor Aeternus' version of it. To know that something that silly is being sung by a german transgendered goth vampire is just too delicious.

This song was done in the 20s My Big 10 Inch. Aerosmith did a version in the 70s. They were singing about the 10 inch record a 78 rpm. Also Shaving Cream, an old Dr. Demento classic.

Ah, novelty songs - gotta love 'em!

'My Ding a Ling' is one of my faves.

Also, 'The Curly Shuffle' (anyone remember that?) by Jump 'N the Saddle.
That was always on MTV in the 80s, back when the used to play music videos.

And 'Frank's 2000" TV' - definitley one of Weird Al's best.

the Driving Stupid: Horror Asparagus Stories -- I heard this on Dr. Demento once. Go figure! ;)
Butterbeans and Suzie: I wanna hot dog for my roll -- VERY risque vaudeville / novelty hit from 1925.
R. Crumb and the cheap suit serenaders: My girls ***** -- also very risque! Released in 1978 on a 78 rpm record.
The Who: Dogs -- a tune about betting on dogs.
The Who: Dogs part 2 -- nice guitar by Pete with Keith Moon barking on the music breaks.
The Who: Boris the spider -- dark humour by Mr. John Entwhistle
The Who: Cobwebs and strange
most anything by Tom Lehrer: Poisoning pigeons in the park, Oedipus rex. He's quite the pianist too.
Todd Rundgren had a few novelty hits: emperor of the highway, onomatopoeia, an elpee's worth of tunes, we got to get you a woman... His album "A wizard, a true star" had a lot of novelty / experimental / psychedelic stuff going on.

When I was a wee lad it was Bobby Boris Pickett's "Monster Mash." My parents actually owned the album where it came from.

Offhand, Sheb Wooley's "Purple Peter Eater."

More recently, Afroman's "Because I Got High." (2001)

Have you ever heard Judy Garland's version of "Purple People Eater"? It's from one of her live LPs I had on vinyl as a kid (and somehow my mother had no idea I was gay...) it still cracks me up to just think of such a dynamic artist taking on such a goofy song. You can here a tiny clip here: http://www.last.fm/music/Judy+Garland/_/Purple+People+Eater+(Live)+(2002+Digital+Remaster)

I recommmend anything by Alestorm from their album, "Captain Morgan's Revenge": They profess themselves as "Scottish Pirate Metal."

With songs such as "Wenches and Mead," "Set Sail and Conquer," "Nancy The Tavern Wench," and "Terror On The High Seas," they take Novelty to a new and chessier level.
