Well .. I am Canadian ( eh! ) and I am frrrrench :)
I don't think that you will get an answer to your question right off the bat bud. I think this comes with time. I know if I was to meet my better half online, then it wouldn't matter where he lived. If you're in love and after you meet with them, and you know things are sparking up and working out.. then I guess anyone would move for true love. But to ask the question plain out... best of luck. ( Just my 2 cents ).

| Re: How to meet French Ladies from Canada Posted: 9/23/2004 12:35:38 PM | Well I'm not French Canadian so if there is another French Canadian reading this thread they will have a better answer than me. However I am English Canadian and can read/speak some French too. ;)
"French Canadian" refers to that portion of the Canadian population that speaks Canadian French as their mother tongue. The far majority of French Canadians live in the province of Quebec which we often call "French Canada." It was the centre of French settlement in early Canada and has been accorded special rights/privileges as part of the original agreement between the English and French when the English were victorious over the French back in the 1700's (I believe it was late 1700s but I may be wrong on this date.) For instance the French settlers were guaranteed language rights and the right to keep their religion, etc. These rights today have been honoured still by Canada and Canada is basically a bilingual country out of respect for the rights that were promised (so that any francophone (french speaker)) may travel anywhere in Canada and has a right to government services, etc. in French even though the province they may be in at the time may have an extremely small francophone population.)
Quebec is the centre of French Canada but there are also many French Canadians/francophones living in the province of Ontario (particularly northern Ontario) and in the Maritime provinces (similar to your New England states.)
Are they Canada's hillbilly's you asked... no. Is there bad blood between English and French Canada? There has been for sure but for the most part things are pretty calm between us. Quebec has many times threatened to secede from Canada (just as your southern states tried to secede from the Union back in Civil War times.) They have their own set of grievances (which, since I'm not French Canadian, I can't adequately explain.) On the other side, many English Canadians have resented having to learn French (it is required to study French as part of our school training until a certain grade) and be subject to other laws that are meant to take care of these old promised rights. I for one don't hold any animosity towards French Canadians and certainly never want to see Quebec secede.

| Re: How to meet French Ladies from Canada Posted: 9/23/2004 12:40:32 PM | P.S. You also asked if "French Canadian" referred to a mix of French and Indian. No. But certainly as the French Canadian settlers were here very early in our history, there was definitely intermarriage between them and the Native Americans. There is also a population called "Metis" (sorry, don't know how to put accent aigu in on this keyboard) which was mixed Native American and French Canadian... they were famous for an uprising that took place in the province of Manitoba back in the 1800s I believe. However, certainly the French settlers mixed with Native Americans in Quebec and elsewhere as they were some of the very earliest settlers in Canada...

By the way, a big part of the States was originally under the French too... look at the Louisiana purchase from Napoleon. ;)
Do you know they still have the Napoleonic Code in effect in Quebec? ;)

Willing to move is hard to say ... I guess it all depends how much two people would 'click'. If you're really in love then I think a person would move to make it work. | |
