Why put the lid down on a loo?
Posted: 5/29/2008 7:10:53 AM
Some say it's rude for a guy to leave the toilet seat up. Is it not rude to leave the toilet seat down? And what about those wackies who insist on leaving the bloody lid down?
I can't tell you how many times I have been to the dunny and some person has put the bloody lid down. Lets face it when we need to go to the dunny we usually want to go fast.
What purpose is served by having the lid down?

Errr when you flush it spreads germs into the air, who wants that?? So hygiene I guess would be a good answer, and I always put it down, drives me crazy when someone leaves it up

Leave the toilet lid up and everytime your loo gets flushed the lovely microscopic bacteria from pee pee and worse fly through the air landing on your soap, towels and toothbrush..Nice thought for you next time you brush your teeth!

Errr when you flush it spreads germs into the air,
.....No I don't believe this. We pee into the basin and then we flush.....So what happens then? Do we close the lid so that the next person who opens it get's 'hit' with these germs?
Germs are little creatures who make contact with the skin. So regardless of the lid being up or down these critters will get us.

I have a really neat cover for my toilet seat...
and I can't appreciate how it beautifies (lol) my bathroom if the lid is up all the time.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

1. It looks neater
2. You won't drop stuff in it that falls off the top of the toilet
3. No bacteria flying in the air (and yes, that *is* true)
4. Cat's won't fall in it
5. Dog's won't drink out of it
6. Kids less inclined to flush toys down it.

For me, it's just a habit. I've done it since I got my first kitten, about 9 years ago. Didn't want the lil boy fallin' in. My new apartment mate leaves the lid up and yes, it drives me nuts. No, I won't say anything to her...no kittens and this is just a temporary living sit. But I still put it down when I use it.

Sometimes I just want to find a quiet room in the house, where I can sit.

It's also a nice way to show off that decorative lid cover, especially if you've a tank cover to match.

Good for taking off your shoes before you get in the shower, as well.

And why have a lid, if you're not going to put it down?

Nothing to flip your lid about. Put a lid on it.

I think leaving the lid up is just icky. Mine is down, and even when I'm somewhere else, I put the lid down after I'm done. It's automatic, I don't even think about it.

This is true... however....

According to certain sources...

There is evidence that proves that if you flush the loo without the lid down germs can spread from the toilet and land on other nearby objects in the bathroom such as your toothbrush. Even if you put the lid down when you flush, germs can still escape through the cracks in the toilet seat

So the germ theory does not hold water in this instance.

I did hear you should keep your toothbrush at least 2 metres from your loo to ensure it is free of loo germs....

I just think everyone should put the lid down every time. Then there's no discussion about seat-up or seat-down....and the cat doesn't fall in.

I always put the seat/lid down, even if it was up when I started.

Two thoughts:

First, mythbusters checked out the aerosol bacteria concept and while yes, they did find it on toothbrushes left in the open in the bathroom, they also found it in equal quantities on toothbrushes left pretty much everywhere else - closet, cabinet, kitchen, bedroom, etc....

So apparently we've got little germies all over the place, and somehow we all survive. My toothbrush is close to my toilet, I hardly ever put the lid down, and I hardly ever get sick. There's one data point for you, anyway.

As for the seat, am I the only batchelor who's figured out that if I always sit when I go, I don't have to clean the bathroom as often? Makes for a more controlled stream, if that's not too much information....

I live with a roommate who is also male, and he leaves it up and I put it down. Mwa ha haaa.
I put it down because I like to keep the place where we do our business closed if it's not in use.

ya I saw that one too. Couldnt microscopic ammounts be seeping up your intestines, up your asophagus and into your mouth onto your teeth and then onto your toothbrush? Or is it really floating off the toilet and landing on your toothbrush?

As long as the toilet is kept clean, there's no real reason why the lid needs to be up or down . . . mostly it's just an excuse for a domestic power struggle . . .

But there is the feng shui belief that a lid left up invites chi to flow away . . . and with it all your money and sex appeal . . .

Then there is potential of a water bill disaster . . . has anyone else seen the YouTube video of the cat that would stay up all night, repeatedly flushing the toilet and watching, fascinated, as the water swirled around and down?

Anyone see the Myth Busters episode on this? Actually, poo bacteria are so spread out they wind up on the toothbrush no matter where you put it in your house, at least according to their experiment. http://www.answerbag.co.uk/q_view/65983

I have a friend is a mysophobe and she was surprised I didn't put the lid down before I flushed. The toilets in my house are industrial-strength flushers and you can feel the whoosh of air caused by the flush regardless of the lid position.

this animation only happens 998 times.

You are not alone! I learned this from a German bachelor friend in the early 90s who, when I paid him a visit in Frankfurt, "invited me to always sit down when using the toilet." It's been advice that paid off big time over the years. Not only are things cleaner, but you never have to worry about "up or down" when you live with a woman. In fact, I have cleaned enough toilets to argue that a man sitting down makes less mess than a woman, but I don't want to start a ruckus.

As for too much information, this sit-down method can be most practical early in the morning when you're still kind of asleep...

In an ironic twist, this thread was directly above one that had the following in the subject line: "Men in Brown".

I suppose the answer is right before our eyes.

Simple way to prove your point.
After trying it once...the lid will be down.

If you use those cleaning thingies in the toilet, and have thirsty kitties.. that's a good reason. An ex and I BOTH always used to put the seat down because we both hated cleaning the toilet, so to make it need a cleaning a little less often, we put in one of those bleach deals that cleans a little each time you flush.

Neither of us wanted bleach-slurping dead kitties.
