| Las Vegas in August Posted: 5/29/2008 8:30:07 AM | Looking to get some opinions on traveling to Las Vegas in August. I've been warned that it is a terrible time to travel because temperatures reach 40 C.
Is this a valid case not to head to sin city in august?

| Las Vegas in August Posted: 5/29/2008 3:48:31 PM | | Yeah, it's real hot around that time. There's plenty of air conditioning in the casinos if you're just going to stay in. | |

| Las Vegas in August Posted: 5/29/2008 7:09:02 PM | Haha vegas in Aug. It will be like 45+ (110+) most days. But its still worth it. At night it will be great.
The strip is something to see in person.

| Las Vegas in August Posted: 5/31/2008 2:08:00 AM | I was in Vegas last August and to be honest it was hot. Didn't bother me though since I like warm weather. And also it's dry heat, so that doesn't feel bad as when it would be warm and humid.
Plenty of things to do in there and the heat didn't seem to put people off. Lots of them around even in August.

| Las Vegas in August Posted: 6/15/2008 11:36:14 AM | Check out Ceasar's palace's direct booking web site. You can get rooms for 100-120USD in August, simply because people avoid the heat. (They usually start at 220. You can't even get that good a deal on Orbitz!)
If you are just going for the gambling, night clubs and shopping, you should be fine. Ceasar's is a great place to stay too, because it is a HUGE hotel and they have all of the above mentioned things and amazing restaurants, too like Spagos and small, simple, cheap meals like the New York deli and grocerty/convenience stores. You won't have to go outside once!
I wouldn't suggest a trip to hoover dam or red rock, though

| Las Vegas in August Posted: 6/17/2008 8:44:40 PM | | OOOOH i am also thinking about this too! my bday is in AUG. Yet i am nervous for the same reasons (AUG=an oven). But if you do go, I would definetly check out the signature at mgm....its one of the best hotels in the US | |

| Las Vegas in August Posted: 6/18/2008 4:43:32 AM | I have been Vegas in Apr. I suggest you going to each hotel, its different style is attractive, but I missed it cuz I have little time there.Fremonte Street is so great, the LED light is shining and amazing.Gambling is complicated to me.I'd rather use those shopping than losing money. Have a blast trip there. | |

| Las Vegas in August Posted: 6/18/2008 10:14:59 AM | Vegas is great year round. Here are my tried and true tips based on my 4 years of constant travel to and from LAS.
Before you leave home Check sites like Orbitz for hotels. With all the economy issues going on lots of hotels are lowering rates to just get people in the door. I normally stay with MGM/Mirage properties and if you can normally get a room at the West Wing in the MGM Grand for pretty cheap at the last minute. PACK SUNSCREEN and a few extra bottles to be safe. Put something on your suitcase that is loud and makes it easier to be seen. The airport is upgrading the baggage system and now the bags are coming up faster and on much bigger holding areas. You don't wanna have to wait forever to get your bags.
When you arrive- If you are staying at MGM Grand - check in at the desk at the airport. They are normally not packed and you will get checked in a lot faster than at the hotel. If you need transportation ask. Sometimes they will give out free transportation vouchers or if you want an upgraded room try the ol' $20 trick. When you walk up have a $20, your ID and credit car in your hand. Place the id and credit card down first while doing the whole "I wold like to check in deal" then place the 20 down closer to you and say and can you check for any free upgrades that might be available. If they can help you give them the $20 with everything else :-) I have had it work 6/8 times.
Vegas never sleeps and neither does crime. The idea of a casino is to confuse you so that you loose track of time and spend lots (or win lots) of money. Make sure that you don't carry all your money - leave some in the safe in the room. When you do win big make sure you carry some back to your room. Don't flash $100 bills or chips. The only people that are impressed are the ones that are going to steal it. Also, late at night the professional ladies of the night come out. Try to stay in one place at night and avoid walking the strip too much. Pick pockets and believe it or not professional ladies will actually try to touch you to get your attention and I don't like that one bit.
Drink water for the love of god! Listen, the last thing you wanna do is get sick on your trip. Drink lots of water especially in the summer. Don't be an idiot and try and walk the whole strip at once. Take breaks and enjoy the AC free drinks and sights in all the different casinos.
The monorail is great but way too expensive. The other bad thing is you don't get a full strip view however it is air-conditioned and is cheaper and faster than renting a car or taxi.
Pick a casino to play at. If you are planning on coming back to Vegas and want some freebies or discounts next time pick one casino and signup for a member card. The more you play the more they reward you. Also, it is a good idea to stay at that same casino. Before you check out be sure to stop by the player's desk and ask if your play on this trip will get you any comps. They will check and you might get a few nights comp'd off your total bill. Watch your mail and e-mail for special member only deals in the coming months as well.
Hope this helps! | |

| Las Vegas in August Posted: 6/18/2008 11:41:05 AM | Yeah your gonna get scorched. If you go outside that is. They have done so much improvement that you can spend almost the entire trip indoors. In fact, I think its possible to loop from the New York New York al the way down and then back up around past the Ballys without getting outside. Its probably even better than that now.
Im pretty sure they must refrigerate their pools too. I was there in late July once and the pool at Paris was so damn cold I couldnt get in it even with the temps being in the 110 range. Be content with people watching.

| Las Vegas in August Posted: 6/19/2008 8:56:15 AM | We were in Las Vegas on August 19th, 1995 coming back from a trip to Disneyland and timed it where we would arrive for Mike Tyson's first come back fight after he was released from jail and he was to fight Peter McNeeley and we were hoping to get some cheap seats at the MGM Grand to watch the massacre. Unfortunately all the cheap seats were sold out and we were not interested in the $1000 tickets for 90 seconds of entertainment.
Of course we were pretty naive where we thought we could just arrive in Las Vegas on a fight night weekend and get a hotel only to find every hotel in Vegas was all booked up in advance and we had to resort to the 3 of us sleeping in our car in the Star dust parking lot.
As you can imagine it was very hot and each of us got jealous if we thought another person was sleeping since it was so hard to sleep in the car at that temperature (Or to sleep in a car in general).
I remember walking down the strip and we were so hot that we were weaving our way in and out of the air conditioned casinos.
As long as you are not planning on sleeping in your car then everything should be fine (temperature wise) since you are probably not going to spend too much time outside anyhow and everything in Vegas is air conditioned.
|
| Las Vegas in August Posted: 6/19/2008 6:03:49 PM | Yeah, don't sleep in your car!
I've seen adds for Ceasars charging $120 middle of the week, and Bally's charging $69. Bellagio, like I said before has some nights for $159. The Bellagio is connected to Ceasars by a bridge and Ballys is right across from Bellagio, connected by elevators, escalators and moving walkways. Bally's is also connected to the Paris.
Just between these 4 hotels, there are so many amazing restaurants, shows and shopping, casinos, night clubs (The barge in Ceasars has good jazz). The Mirage is next to Ceasars and has a pretty good night club too (Revolution).
There is also a shuttle on the strip (air conditioned) which you can buy a pass for for 5 bucks and go anywhere.
If you stay on the strip, you're good.
Have fun! | |
|
| Las Vegas in August Posted: 6/20/2008 6:21:52 PM | You will have a blast been to Vegas the last five years in a row. Go to the pool, ride the shuttle and sleep during the day and have your fun at night. That's how I stayed cool. If you still get Hot get you a cold one VEGAS ROCKS AND ROLLS | |

| Las Vegas in August Posted: 6/22/2008 12:49:42 PM | To Ron: I am getting to hate your ads you post on every travel link. Isn't that against the rules to solicit business on this site? They are really annoying.
to the vegas traveller: some of the hotels right off the strip are great hotels, and are just one block from the strip for half the price. I would google Las Vegas, get a map of the strip, and check out the pricing of hotels that way. to pay over $100 per night for a room to sleep in is silly, unless you want the "luxury" room because you plan to spend alot of time in it. I have found that all I did was shower and sleep in my room, not hang. some of these hotels also have awesome flight/hotel rates. (usually the cost of the flight and hotel is almost the same price as you getting the airline flight yourself) (they want your business!!) Just make sure to check prices.
I attend a class reunion and we go Labor Day weekend every few years. (End of August.) It is hot, but drink lots of water. Remember alcohol is FREE in every casino when you are gambling. Our days to avoid the heat was to do the strip from about 7 pm to about 4 am. Sleep until noon. Hang at the pool until three. Hit the room for a nap and the AC, then get ready to go out again around 6 or 7. The only alteration is that the shops/malls do close down late at night. We found that walking around in the day was not so bad, because you are only outside for maybe 10-15 minutes at time before you are lured into a casino or shop.
The Las Vegas website also has discounted tickets for the Monorail system. It is still a small hike (a five to ten minutes walk) from the stations to the strip, and each station takes you thru one of the casinos, but it does get you quickly from one area of the strip to the other. I got a week unlimited ride pass for $35.... the only bad thing is don't party past 2:30-3:00 am.... they stop running and you need to walk or cab it to get back to your hotel. There is also a double deck bus that you can buy an unlimited ride daily pass for I think $5 per day. It stays on the strip and stops everywhere.
good luck and have fun. | |

| Las Vegas in August Posted: 6/22/2008 9:52:04 PM | A native Nevadan says:
1) Stay at a Station casino or downtown. It's cheaper. 2) Unless you rent a car, take the bus. It's just as fast as a cab at rush hour...and a hell of a lot cheaper. 3) Read the paper online BEFORE you go.That way you'll know where to AVOID. 4) Drink a LOT of water (or Gatorade) like poster above said. It's easy for people from other climates to become dehydrated quickly in the heat. And,yes, it will be HOT!! 5) Make a rough plan of what you want to do and see BEFORE you go. There's a LOT there and it's easy to get sidetracked if you don't have a plan.
and
6) Most importantly...do EVERYTHING (eating, drinking, gambling, strip clubs, illegal substances, etc) IN MODERATION. Vegas has a number of hospitals that are used to caring for those who have "overindulged." Trust me, you REALLY don't want to visit any of them.
Good Luck...and I hope that you have a great time!!

| Las Vegas in August Posted: 6/23/2008 8:26:04 AM | | My cousin recently got 5 nights free at the Venetian's Palazzo with his slot machine membership card. I'm pretty sure you can register on line for it, you don't have to go there in person. | |

| Las Vegas in August Posted: 6/30/2008 4:08:48 PM | Was there a couple years ago at the end of August and it was so hot it felt like the rubber on your shoes was melting upon exiting the airport terminal. A good kind of heat though. Only regrets though were should have stayed at Mandalay Bay, should have rented the porsche and used more sunscreen lol. Have fun | |
|
| Las Vegas in August Posted: 6/30/2008 9:39:27 PM | I am going to Vegas (this weekend) for the first time ... woo hoo - soooo looking forward to it. Not looking forward to the heat though, but sounds like heat or not, it is definitely a place to visit. Thanks for the tips everyone :o) | |
|
| Las Vegas in August Posted: 7/3/2008 6:50:20 AM | The heat is easy in Vegas because its so dry and feels nothing like humidity in TX.. The heat in Colorado, SLC or even New Mexico seems more tolerable. | |
|
| Las Vegas in August Posted: 7/4/2008 1:22:22 PM | Hi,
I wouldn't worry to much about the temperatures to be honest, I lived there for a wee while and in July it reached 120F or about 48C, however, most often you'll be going from an air conditioned cab/car to an air conditioned building.
And a lot of places outdoors have misty spray type things to keep you cool.
But then again, if you are going for outdoor activities, it'll be bloody hot :)

| Las Vegas in August Posted: 7/8/2008 11:34:12 PM | | I spent 4th of July in vegas. I am a travel agent. I checked out each hotel for their rates on line. The best way to book a hotel in Vegas is direct unless your going to do a package. July and August etmps run the same in the 100's. One of the post suggested a station casino. I couldn't agree more. All the strip casinos are very expensive. If your rich it doesn't matter. If you plan on gambling I would call the VIP registration desk and let them know you are going to gamble. If you are going to gamble enough they may even put you up for free if you put up enough money first. If you want to go and have fun. Palace Station Casino is on sahara Ave. Mid week prices are only 24.99 a night. Weekends are higher that is Friday and Saturday. All their rooms have been renovated and they have a free shuttle that takes you to the hotel and back to the hotel. They have buses that run all night and you can buy a bus pass for 24 hrs for $2.50 cents. I have stayed at Bellagio, and the Wynn, Ballys. All are fantastic hotels. I've eaten at most of the buffets and was very impressed with Treasure Island Buffet. It was better than the Bellagio and I ate their 2 days earlier. Paris casino has a great buffet. The 2 newest hotels on the strip are Planet Hollywood and Palazzo. Palazzo is beautiful something like the Venetian which is also a fantastic expensive hotel. Mandalay Bay has a beach at theHotel. It's the only Casino that has a beach. You have any questions, ask me I am a Vegas specialist and I have been going to Vegas for over 30 years every year. | |
|
| Las Vegas in August Posted: 7/11/2008 9:38:03 AM | The air conditioning in all the casinos will coool you down so much - just take the ususal precautions - wear a hat and sunblock if walking outside - have plenty of fluids.
Hope you have a blast ! | |
|
| Las Vegas in August Posted: 7/25/2008 9:56:21 PM | I live in Vegas and alot of tourist do get dehydrated because they are not used to the heat. Be prepapred for tempatures between 110-120F during the day. Night time is still about 90F. Hottesttimeof the day here is usually between 2-6 pm.
The Palms Casino is the hot spot. Rain nightclub in the casino and Ghostbar at the top of the Casino are popular spots. There is also the Playboy club there too. When you get here make sure to pick up a Las vegas weekly or City Life newspaper. It has everything going in Vegas during the week. Its also free.
|
| Las Vegas in August Posted: 8/5/2008 11:30:58 AM | Ghostbar...without a shadow of a doubt!
And the fountain show in front of the Bellagio in the evening, simply awesome, especially when they play Time to Say Goodbye!
|
| Las Vegas in August Posted: 8/5/2008 11:39:36 AM | | Well, I'm going Aug 14th. My daughter lives there. Yes, it is hot, but it is currently 105 F here in Oklahoma with about 75% humidy. It will be 110 F in Vegas with less than 10% humidy. So their hot is not like our hot. If I can stand it, you can. | |
|
| Las Vegas in August Posted: 8/6/2008 3:00:30 PM | | You'd be much better waiting till Sept / early October if you can . I have family living in Boulder City (just outside the city) and its always better to visit then :)Cheaper too!! Rates are a bit better because its low season. | |
