| What's up with Father Michael Pfleger? Posted: 5/29/2008 6:49:49 PM | My first thought is that churches that get involved in political punditry should be taxed. Aside from that, this only seems to be a huge deal on Fox News. It certainly isn't a huge deal in my decision making process. We are a nation "at war" after all. The saddest part of all is that one of our deployments is unneccessary. I see everything in this election from that priority level.
My first exposure to Obama was in reading an excerpt from his "Audacity of Hope." His words about the role of faith in his life resonated with me almost immediately. He explained that doubt is a healthy part of faith. I also got the idea that he is more reliant on the brain that God gave him than he is on a sermon that his preacher gave him.

Posted: 5/29/2008 9:24:38 PM | | I thought his words about Hillary Clinton were ridiculous, and I don't believe for a second that they reflect Obama's thoughts about her and what motivates her. But unlike with the Wright episode, Obama denounced what Pfleger said immediately, and Pfleger has also apologized and said that he didn't think what he said had anything to do with Obama's position. So hopefully, people will take it for what it is....wrongheaded assertions by an individual, speaking for himself.

one- something is systematically wrong with this "church"
two- a church this involved in politics should lose their tax exempt status-
three- again we have Obama apologizing for harsh words said inside his church...

He didn't apologize for them....he condemned them.

All theology is political....and Christianity itself is/was/has ever been most definitely, nothing if not a "political movement."

The Church seemed Happy with the Prophetic, Friend and Brother speaking. Was the feed cut off? What has been edited OUT? I want to hear it all.......
The description of Hillary, and Whitie...... accurate? Racist White entitlement of Hillary?
Everyone in the Church enjoyed the description. I think all the Obama supporters should voice their support of Father Pfleger. Clinton Deserves it.
Father Pfleger....Rev. Moss....Rev Wright...... True Spiritual Leadership.
Archdiocese of Chicago Hammers Father Pfleger
May 30, 2008 1:25 PM
Cardinal Francis George of the Archdiocese of Chicago just issued this statement about Father Michael Pfleger's ridicule of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton in a sermon at the church of Sen. Barack Obama, Trinity United Church of Christ, on Sunday:
"The Catholic Church does not endorse political candidates. Consequently, while a priest must speak to political issues that are also moral, he may not endorse candidates nor engage in partisan campaigning.
"Racial issues are both political and moral and are also highly charged. Words can be differently interpreted, but Fr. Pfleger’s remarks about Senator Clinton are both partisan and amount to a personal attack. I regret that deeply.
"To avoid months of turmoil in the church, Fr. Pfleger has promised me that he will not enter into campaigning, will not publicly mention any candidate by name and will abide by the discipline common to all catholic priests."
I just have to say, as someone of faith, I have never before heard a cleric engage in such disdainful mockery from a pulpit. Have you?

| What's up with Father Michael Pfleger? Posted: 5/30/2008 11:21:59 AM | Father Pfleger called for assassination of McCain.........
“We’re going to snuff out John Riggio,” Pfleger told the estimated 200 people at the rally. “We’re going to snuff out legislators that are voting against our gun laws.”
Cardinal Francis George has taken an unusual step: issuing a statement about the Archdiocese of Chicago’s activist priest, the Rev. Michael Pfleger, for comments he made at an anti-gun rally.
It is the latest episode in longstanding tensions between George and Pfleger, who have clashed over everything from doctrine to politics.
The cardinal said in his statement: “Publicly delivering a threat against anyone’s life betrays the civil order and is morally outrageous, especially if this threat came from a priest.”

By the way, note the audience reaction behind him. They are going NUTS!! Absurdities like this, and certainly Rev Wright as well, have no place in American Society!
If this man Obama gets elected, it only serves to demonstrate the dark side unfortunately alive in altogether too many of us.

A firm statement...............
"As I have traveled this country, I've been impressed not by what divides us, but by all that unites us," Obama said in a statement. "That is why I am deeply disappointed in Father Pfleger's divisive, backward-looking rhetoric."

It really was ridiculous! Was Obama there? Did he say that he agreed with this Catholic priest who is not even from his church? Was Obama involved in bringing him as a guest?
Seems like this Trinity church is a bit nuts though. Seems like they might be on a personal mission to cause Obama some problems. He probably needs to distance himself from the church all together.
Honestly, we do live in a 2 class system. A lot of what Wright said (not everything) was right on. Americans just can not stand to hear it. As a country we enjoy our ignorance way too much. I think this catholic guy was trying to be funny. Nice job.

| What's up with Father Michael Pfleger? Posted: 5/30/2008 1:22:43 PM | Whether people want to admit it or not, people are sometimes judged by the company they keep. From what I can discern, Obama and Pfleger have been close for quite a few years.
http://www.slate.com/id/2188414/
In April 2004, Barack Obama told a reporter from the Chicago Sun-Times that he had three spiritual mentors or counselors: Jeremiah Wright, James Meeks, and Father Michael Pfleger — for a change of pace, a white Catholic preacher who has a close personal feeling for the man he calls (as does Obama) Minister Farrakhan. This crossover stuff is not as "inclusive" as it might be made to seem: Meeks' main political connections in the white community are with the hysterically anti-homosexual wing of the Christian right. If Obama were to be read a list of the positions that his clerical supporters take on everything from Judaism to sodomy, he would be in the smooth and silky business of "distancing" from now until November.
======================== Here's the video from Michael Pfleger: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_H11x6bMu4Y
Here is the article from the Chicago Sun-Times in 2004: http://www.suntimes.com/news/falsani/726619,obamafalsani040504.article
In part, says: Friends and advisers, such as the Rev. Michael Pfleger, pastor of St. Sabina Roman Catholic Church in the Auburn- Gresham community on the South Side, who has known Obama for the better part of 20 years, help him keep that compass set, he says.
Another person Obama says he seeks out for spiritual counsel is state Sen. James Meeks, who is also the pastor of Chicago's Salem Baptist Church. The day after Obama won the primary in March, he stopped by Salem for Wednesday-night Bible study.
Meeks is well-established on record as spewing racial divisiveness as well:

Maybe this is just part of the African American culture? I don't know. I would be dismayed to think that all black churches spew this rhetoric. We keep reading that children in Mexico are taught to believe that S.W. USA should be returned to Mexico -- and Palestinian children are taught to hate Jews -- where does it all end????
No, Barack Obama wasn't in the audience, nor should he be held responsible for what Michael Pfleger said. However, he should also be aware that there are people who DO believe you are judged by the company you keep - and if all of your spiritual advisers spew racial hatred/rhetoric/divisiveness, then the next logical thought is the apple does not fall far from the tree.

First of all, the Priest is Catholic and not a spritual leader of Obama's. He will have no part in getting Obama elected.
The dark side I see in people is this need to attack and then hang onto it like a pit bull when it isnt even of any importance. The only importance it has is to make someone look bad. You know, politics as usual. Obama did not have anything to do with what this Priest said. Some how you are desperately trying to link him to it. Some how this puts him in complete agreement with a sermon that he was not present for.
I have not been an Obama supporter. Suthn Boy- I think you have convinced me though. The way that Obama handled the Bobby Kennedy comment from Hillary showed an awful lot of class. He could have used it. He could have bit into it and said she was trying to imply that someone would assasinate him. You know, politics as usual. Did he, No.
He said, I accept her explanation as did I. He has shown class. You, not so much.

So you're not only a Wright fan, but a Phleger fan too, are you? Whew!
And this is exactly my point! Did I say I was a fan of Wright? NO! Did I say I was a fan of Phleger? NO! Did I say they were out of line? YES! I said that a lot of what Wright said was true.
The US does fund and support states sponsored terrorism against the Palestinians. That is true. The US has been meddling in the rest of the world's politics for our own selfish, capitalistic interests of the wealthy few. This war was never in your or my best interest. His statement about the chickens coming home to roost. I agree with that statement.
I was being facetious about Phleger being funny. Although I did find it amusing. If a comedian said it it would have been funny.

No part of Obama Campaign?
He was listed as one of BHO's Spiritual leaders.
Laugh at the humor..... So funny it will Drive a wedge between Obama and any hope of his election.
Obama's spokesman, Ben LaBolt, was unable to say when Obama last spoke to Pfleger. LaBolt said Pfleger stepped down from the
............................"Catholics for Obama committee "
He confirmed that Obama steered a $100,000 state grant in 2000 to a Pfleger-affiliated community program.
$100,000 From the state? What will he get when Obama is in the White House?
Head of HUD?

Very well said. It's the constant irrational attacks on Obama and the graceful manner that he handles them that make more and more people admire him. I wish some of the posters would be more honest about things and just come out and say that they don't want a black man as their president rather than finding sillier and siller "politically correct" reasons in trying to convince others not to vote for him.
|
| What's up with Father Michael Pfleger? Posted: 5/30/2008 2:48:21 PM | I would welcome a black man as president, if his politics were in line with what I believe in. Unfortunately, Barack Obama's politics are way on the other side of the political spectrum from mine.
I would welcome a woman as president, if her politics were in line with what I believe in. Same comment as above for Hillary.
Last summer, I set up a Ron Paul booth at a gun show. One guy actually asked me why, since I was a woman, wasn't I supporting Hillary. I said that it is very sad to think that I should support her simply because I am a woman. I feel the same way about race. I am not going to support or not support someone simply because of the color of their skin.
If they are in line with my political beliefs, I will support them. If they are not, I won't support them. Simple as that. I have voted as a Republican, and I have voted as a Democrat. I vote for the CANDIDATE -- NOT THE PARTY! If more people would stop worrying about the party and vote their conscience, maybe we'd have a better selection of representatives in Washington.

| What's up with Father Michael Pfleger? Posted: 5/30/2008 4:18:28 PM | This is why churches now should lose their tax exempt status when they get involved in politics.
For this latest example of preachers gone wild, sadly the style and words that I have seen are no surprise to me. I went to several churches in the Chicago area along with the suburbs with an ex who had relatives in these various area churches and this is pretty average. Some were more flamboyant and divisive some where more inspirational.
It is sad this is average but there are plenty of churches where they use the pulpit to get their views good or bad out there. I have been to a church once where the preacher used the "n" word to describe a robber of one of their members. I have also been to churches where they do not feed into the negative ideas of the community whether black, white, latino or otherwise. These are getting fewer and fewer sadly.
It might be better for Obama to say he is not religious anymore because these clips will continue because it is sadly becoming more and more a part of organized religion to be political and feed into negativity.
