Shocked, awed and happy ! Lost tribe in Brazil

Friday 30th May 2008

One of Brazil's last uncontacted indigenous tribes has been spotted in the far western Amazon jungle near the Peruvian border.

Tribe has no contact with authoritiesThe tribe was sighted in an Ethno-Environmental Protected Area along the Envira River in flights over remote Acre state, the National Indian Foundation, known as Funai, said.

Funai said it photographed "strong and healthy" warriors, six huts and a large planted area.

But it was not known to which tribe they belonged, the group said.

"Four distinct isolated peoples exist in this region, whom we have accompanied for 20 years," Funai expert Jose Carlos Meirelles Junior said in a statement.

The tribe sighted recently is one of the last not to be contacted by officials.

Funai does not make contact with such tribes Indians and prevents invasions of their land to ensure their autonomy, the foundation said.

Survival International says the Indians are in danger from illegal logging in Peru, which is driving uncontacted tribes over the border.

It warned the situation could lead to conflict with the estimated 500 uncontacted Indians now living on the Brazilian side.

There are more than 100 uncontacted tribes worldwide, most of them in Brazil and Peru, the group said in a statement.

"These pictures are further evidence that uncontacted tribes really do exist," Survival director Stephen Corry said.

"The world needs to wake up to this, and ensure that their territory is protected in accordance with international law.

"Otherwise, they will soon be made extinct.

I wanted to share this story with you . I think its an unusual story .Its simple.Positive.Kind .Its awe inspiring .I cannot believe that there are people living today without the very basics of what we consider to be "civilsation"

What would they think of the rest of us ?
Whats their diet ,clothing and aims in life?
What language would they speak ?
Should they be left alone ?

This makes you stop and think.....we are all so cynical nowadays....but you really don't need much in life to be happy . So read this and be grateful for the things that really matter .

What would they think of the rest of us ?

I don't believe that they are ignorant to the fact that there is modern civilzation out there. The fact that they CHOSE to stay away, quite well shows what it is that they think of us.

Whats their diet ,clothing and aims in life?

Their diet most likely consists of wild game, and things in the forrest. With the occasional midnight sneaking out the the nearest McDonalds. Probably about five miles away ;)

Aims in life: Survival, just like the rest of us, with some comfort and security thrown in.

Should they be left alone ?

Yes. Unless they have resources which we really really need. Might not like that answer, but it is reality.

IMO, this is the ultimate "endangered species" and these people, their land, and their way of life should be left intact at any cost.(and YES, I realize they, technically speaking, aren't a separate "species")

Yeah, I found from raising 4 kids and barely surviving it all, the 2 things people need are just a roof over one's head, and some food--everything else is just extra. What a great attitude about this whole thing you have!! (Hopefully Bush or Cheney don't find out about them, as they'd probably figure out a way to make person gain off the Peruvian trees while destroying the tribe.) (Cynical me)

"Otherwise, they will soon be made extinct.

The world needs to wake up to this? how about Peru needs to put a stop the illegal logging?

At the risk of sounding cynical, lol, what makes you think they are happy?

I saw this and also the photos of the tribe firing arrows at the airplane passing overhead. My first thought, of course, was that they should be left alone. But then I thought about it.

To leave them alone is to not offer them the opportunity to decide for themselves if they'd like to be left alone. By not contacting them, we've make the decision for them. Perhaps they would be interested in some of the things contact with a modern civilization has to offer - like, say, Novocain when they have to extract a tooth...

Frankly, the use of "shock" & "awe" in the thread title is an extremely poor choice for something that is supposedly a positive story!! Both of those words have been tainted by their association with the giant cluster-f*ck in Iraq, so using them in this thread title almost makes one wonder if this tribe is next on the list of people to be "liberated."

Thanks for all your comments ..................
Yes I understand now that Bush has tainted the words SHOCKED and AWED but lets take them back.

I am shocked that the world has yet to discover all of mankind .
Awed and humbled by human resilence as displayed by this tribe .
Happy to know that humanity can exist without the frills that we think we need.

We think we know it all.........I am not too proud to admit that I learnt something which I consider to be valuable .

luable .

They were saying that contact with the outside world could prove dangerous medically for them. Thats a big concern. But they look fit and healthy....hardly looking for a handout or help ....................its totally fascinating......this must of been what Columbus saw when he came over .They wouldn't deem to fire arrows at a plane if they had a clue what it was ....................they have no idea at all.

And according to the same authorities...............other tribes are coming in from Peru.
They said its no good telling them there is a border here.....you need passports lol........they have no clue and no outside contact...............ever .

Ensure you name your threads properly so people can actually search on them and not create needless redundant threads on the same subject - Thank You

i just read that the photographer who shot that picture of the "lost tribe" admited it was made up. the authorities have known about this tribe since 1910, but they decided to go with story because they wanted to bring attention to the logging of the rain forrest.

Yeah, that's why nobody who had any power believed them in the first place, only us huddled media loving masses. The picture was taken by a guy who is a strong supporter of stopping logging because he believes that there could be up to 300 people in the rain forest there that haven't yet been contacted.

Even CNN came out with most anchors saying they didn't buy it. From Churck Roberts to Mike Galanos. Frankly they've got a point. Just like you shouldn't trust Oil execs about how damaging oil is, you shouldn't trust a preservationist to say he has exclusive evidence that something needs to be preserved. I'm just surprised it wasn't staged, honestly.

Here's the story...it was just a scam

'Lost' Amazon tribe a hoax to raise awareness on logging

THE man behind photos of warriors from an "undiscovered" Amazon tribe that were beamed around the world has admitted it was a hoax.

Indigenous tribes expert, José Carlos Meirelles, said the tribe's existence had been noted since 1910, and they had been photographed to prove that "uncontacted" tribes still existed in an area endangered by logging, The Guardian reported.

Mr Meirelles, who was working for Funai, the Brazilian Indian Protection Agency dedicated to finding remote tribes and protecting them, said he found the group, recorded they lived, and planned the publicity to protect them from losing their habitat.

Mr Meirelles, 61, said the "chance encounter" that produced the famous photographs was no accident.

"When we think we might have found an isolated tribe, a sertanista (tribe expert) like me walks in the forest for two or three years to gather evidence and we mark it in our (global positioning system," he told al-Jazeera.

"We then map the territory the Indians occupy and we draw that protected territory without making contact with them. And finally we set up a small outpost where we can monitor their protection."

In this case Mr Meirelles appears, controversially, to have gone out to seek and find the uncontacted tribe in an area where it was known to be living.

According to his account, the Brazilian state of Acre offered him the use of an aircraft for three days.
"I had years of GPS co-ordinates,"he said.

Mr Meirelles had another clue to the tribe's precise location.

"A friend of mine sent me some Google Earth co-ordinates and maps that showed a strange clearing in the middle of the forest and asked me what that was,"he said.

"I saw the co-ordinates and realised that it was close to the area I had been exploring with my son – so I needed to fly over it."

Mr Meirelles said he he flew a 150km-radius route over the border region with Peru and saw huts that belonged to isolated tribes. But he did not see people.

"When the women hear the plane above, they run into the forest, thinking it's a big bird,' he said. 'This is such a remote area, planes don't fly over it.'

What he was looking for was not only proof of life, but firm evidence that the tribes in this area were flourishing – proof in his view that the policy of no contact and protection was working.

On the last day, with only a couple hours of flight time remaining, Mr Meirelles spotted a large community.

"When I saw them painted red, I was satisfied, I was happy," he said.

"Because painted red means they are ready for war, which to me says they are happy and healthy defending their territory."

Survival International, the organisation that released the pictures along with Funai, conceded yesterday that Funai had known about this nomadic tribe for around two decades.

It defended the disturbance of the tribe saying that, since the images had been released, it had forced neighbouring Peru to re-examine its logging policy in the border area where the tribe lives, as a result of the international media attention.
