My PC is plagued by Platte International...advise please!
Posted: 5/31/2008 11:42:00 AM
Everytime i open my broadband i get a icon on my desktop saying platte account, when i open this it gives me information about a overdue bill for something i know nothing about, saying i have subscribed to something which i may have looked at but certainly dont remember signing up to. I can't just 'remove' it as somehow it just keeps coming back automatically...it's freaking me out a bit. I did ring them and very stupidly gave in to giving them my postcode...yeah I know now how stupid this was I'm just too trusting, I sent them a letter asking them to cancel my so called subscription, but I don't hold out much hope...can anyone please give me some advise. (I'm not very good as to the workings of my pc, so need 'simpletons speak' please!)
This is really freaking me out as I don't want to pay for something I haven't used!

Go to control panel then to add/remove programs see if it's there. Run adware to get rid of the spyware if that's what it is.

You may have to get to msconfig to disable it on startup. But try the first two solutions for now.

I've tried the add/remove option, it's not there, yet when I search for 'Platte' it finds it, I have then deleted it and removed it from trash and it still pops up the next day. Just trying your second option..ad-aware....I'm not a computor buff so not sure if I'm going to be able to do this option....thanks so much for your reply though...I wonder if I'm just going to have to pay for whatever it is....what a scam and what a nightmare

I' m assuming you have downloaded Ad-Aware. Install it, and run it frequently. It will find adware/spyware on your system, then prompt you to quarantine it.

I permanently delete anything that Ad-Aware finds. In all the years I've used it, it has never suggested that I delete a necessarry file. It has, however, pulled a lot of crap out of my computer.

It's a great program.

ETA :

Here's a site that should give you some help. Since we're not supposed to post links here, I won't, but you can figure it out :

Whatever you do .... don't pay! It's a scam .... contact your local consumer complaint association for help. Read about other's experiences here ....

Dude it's the free version chill out geesh lol
Just scan for spyware with adware you will have to update the signatures first.
I use a program called sandboxie to avoid getting spwyare.

As the others have mentioned, download and run the free adaware software, do what it suggest and it should remove the platte account - seems to be a pop up for some films u might have bought or simply a scam

ccleaner is pretty good, as is a decent anti virus

The book "PC's for Dummies" is a good book to read for a simpleton as u put it :)

Searched for the company name and seems among the many complaints are some journalists investigating them, so not a company I would have any dealings with :)

I certain that he was advising the OP not to pay Platte. It wasn't directed at Ad-Aware.

Ad-Aware is fantastic. I like the previous version. The new one is a behemoth.

You can get the leaner, meaner, unbloated version at ***.oldversion.com

The older version does everything you want it to do, without needlessly using excessive resources.

BTW, thanks for the "sandboxie" tip.

Personally I think if you do indeed have some form of an adware which it sounds like you do, then you will be best advised to get more then free Spyware removal program. I have Adware SE which I think is better then the 2008 if you ask me but I noticed that Adware doesn't catch everything.

I have had things that the Adware missed but the A Square Free edition caught. I would consider getting the Adware and other programs such as Spyware Terminator, A Aquare Free Edition and make sure you constantly update it. Some would say atleast once a week but I think you should do it at a minimum of atleast once every 3 to 4 days.

I would also consider getting a program called CCleaner. When you delete a file many times their are still traces of that file and can be recovered easily. Deleting a spyware or virus isn't going to do you any good if the item wasnt quarantined and deleted by the antivirus program.

CCleaner will delete file fully by adding zeros to make the file un recoverable. It is set to one time delete by default but you can go up to Department of Defense erasing or even higher if I am not mistaken. Plus it will show you files that will not be seen on your Add/Remove in your control panel.

You will even see some of the Windows Updates and Hotfixes as well with CCleaner that you will not see in the Add/Remove.
