| What are you doing about it? Posted: 5/31/2008 3:04:00 PM | With all the talk about a possible recession, high gas prices and job lay offs. I'm curious to know what it is your doing to cut back? or what your doing for fun since prices are going up all around us. What about vacations? Are you not going this year because of the high price of gas, air fare and bus?
Looking forward to your answers.....

Anyone else notice pasta prices rise 30% in the last month ? Buy less foreign and more veggies from your neighbours . We need to quickly adapt to less , because we are heading to a crisis point .
Read the papers , asshole jerkoffs are robbing people of their SUVs , think they won't rob you for a tank of gas > and the Govt wants to disarm people ? of their right to have arms ,
When loser asshole jerkoffs are robbing me in my house , where will the anti- gun lobby be then ?

| What are you doing about it? Posted: 5/31/2008 3:45:22 PM | Riding my bicycle to work. Also, I won't go to any gas stations that charge more for using a check card. I usually get my gas at a Sunoco station that is as low as any other station near me, they charge same price cash or credit. Some stations in my area are charging as much as 10 cents a gallon for credit, original excuse was processing them. I heard the cost of that is approximately 2.5 cents a gallon. So why 10 cents per gallon, simple answer really, just another way to gouge us at the pump, as they know many people aren't going to carry enough cash around to fill up their tank when it is going to be $50.oo or more.
I encourage everyone to us Stations that charge same price whether you are using cash, credit, check card, etc.

| What are you doing about it? Posted: 5/31/2008 4:36:29 PM | I'm doing what all the concerned hotshots is Washington and the Corporate bigwigs are doing: absolutely nothing! Until the Corporations of America and our leaders get off their big,fat rat ASSES and demonstrate to me that they also give a flying f***, I'm gonna sit back and watch the show. BTW, if gas goes to 5.00 or 10.00 a gallon, fine. That's that many less inconsiderate, rude, pushy drivers on the road I have to contend with. I've had it with making concessions and adjustments every time big business(the ones charging 4.00 a gallon) and government(the ones letting them do it) makes a change for the worse. | |

I heard the cost of that is approximately 2.5 cents a gallon.
mjk, credit card companies charge on a percentage basis of total sale, not per gallon. So if a station owner is profiting the same cents/gallon, his CC costs are now higher per gallon.
As for what I am doing, I cut down my memberships to online prOn sites from 95 to 88. :=) We all have to do our part to save!
Truly, what I am doing is not panicking. The oil bubble is going to burst soon. Many major brokerages are advising their clients to get out of oil NOW! (Lehman Bros. is one of the most prominent). Gas prices won't come down immediately, but they will eventually. We will probably never get back to $2.00 gas, but things will get better. Petro-chem prices will drop, too.
The sky ain't fallin, just yet. That said, if it does, I'm more than adequately prepared. I just need to find a window mount for my Ma Deuce.....

As for me, I have cut back tremendously on driving, and I canceled my cable to shave off $80/month.
I have switched my grocery shopping from Dominick's to Aldi's, and the savings is TREMENDOUS! The food, in my opinion, is pretty much the same as the "name brand", but sometimes 50 to 75% cheaper. I also take advantage of my local Dollar Tree for some items. However, be sure to check the expiry date on anything purchased there. I get most of my cleaning supplies and household items from Dollar Tree.
I wish I had room for a garden. However, I own a condo with no place to have a garden. My next place will definitely be one where I can have a garden, as well as chickens for eggs & meat. I would like to get a dairy goat as well, for milk and cheese. Yum! That'll be coming as soon as I can sell this place, and find some land out in the country. I want to be as self-sustainable as possible.

| What are you doing about it? Posted: 5/31/2008 7:34:38 PM | Technically, we are not in a recession because that requires two quarters in a row of negative growth and we have not even had one month of negative growth so far. However, it still feels like a recession for some reason. Gas prices are part of it but it’s more than that. I’ve been noticing for almost a year now that stores that have been around for a long time are closing and there are increasingly more foreclosures here in Florida. The foreclosures are mostly to do with a recent failed policy where the government was requiring banks to provide mortgages to people that were not at all qualified. Business has been slow, not for all but for a lot of folks. So, since it feels like a recession, I am doing a few things differently.
I'm curious to know what it is your doing to cut back?
I bought a new car that is pretty good on gas. I drive closer to the speed limit not really to save fuel but because town revenues are down and the police are out giving more traffic tickets. I eat in restaurants fewer times a week and I’ve not been going to bars or clubs. I try more to stick to shopping lists to avoid impulse buys. I’m thinking of getting rid of the house phone because I use my cell mostly anyway but I’m not sure about that yet.
what your doing for fun since prices are going up all around us.
There are a lot of things I enjoy that don’t cost very much. I read and write a lot. I’m not a TV watcher but I do enjoy DVD movies here and there. Imaginative but cheap dates are usually more fun than expensive ones anyway. Intimate encounters don’t cost anything. There’s always the beach. Fishing is fun too but I have not been for a long time because I don’t like doing it alone and my sons are in college and into girls now.
What about vacations?
I already live were tons of people vacation so there are always fun things to do around here. I’m building a tropical paradise get away in my back yard. So far I have built a really nice porch swing and have begun to plant some things around it. Eventually, I’d like the swing to be hidden by surrounding tropical flowers, trees and bushes. I’ll probably add a waterfall and maybe a gazebo back there too but I don’t have a design I love yet.

| What are you doing about it? Posted: 5/31/2008 8:18:28 PM | | My friends and I have taken a page out of yester year and have been enjoying hosting house parties. Everyone brings food and drink, and we watch movies, play card games or board games, and depending on how far people have to drive, spend several nights. During the day, we take day trips around whatever area we are visiting, and those that are physically able usually do some kind of sports. Those that prefer something quieter stay at the house and watch t.v., play games, or just chat. | |

You may be right, but I would assume the percentage might go down as the total sale price goes up or atleast it is more cost effective for a bigger purchase. And as gas prices haven't quadrupled since I heard the cost was 2.5 cents per gallon, why are they charging a full 10 cents. And regardless of the cost for that, I find it hard to beleive that is why they are charging more, I am not that naive. Like, I said in my previous post, it is because people are more likely to use a credit/check card for a purchase over $50.oo vs a $3o.00 purchase.

| What are you doing about it? Posted: 6/1/2008 7:05:18 AM | Similar to Loveoregon's message, I am writing all major newspapers and city councils to stop allowing recruiters in their city. Didn't our current government just allocate another $165 billion for the war in Iraq based on propoganda? The first thing we did was fire all their military--if that wouldn't create plenty of terrorists to fear, I don't know what would. I think the GOP has created problems only they know how to solve, and it's time to stop solving them with our current troops. I also have a high regard for Scott McClellan for his ability to accept the fact he is ruled by a higher power, not just thoe who gave him a paycheck.
I'm staying home and ****ing a lot, that's what I'm doing about it--plus spending money and time for postage so that $165 billion stays in this country where it belongs. (No one appointed Bush to preside over the world anyway).
