| eww nasty bugs in my apt! Posted: 6/1/2008 12:17:21 AM | | Hey Sama, I think you should be able to get the rent money and damage deposit back because it should be up to the landlord's responsibilities to keep the apartment up to standards. Like getting the place fumigated every few months or so. Sure you had a nice landlady, but when the chips are down you have to fend for yourself. Don't forget about those slumlords downtown where they keep the rents very low, and keep the mice and roaches in as guests. Hope you get your rent and deposit back. Post3, some people can't handle those nasty critters. I for one also don't like those big ugly critters. I had rats too in a basement suite I was living in once, was not happy. | |

| eww nasty bugs in my apt! Posted: 6/1/2008 12:25:30 AM | Cockroaches are just a bug don't worry about it. Just throw them outside no need to kill them they are no harm to you. I had rats about a year ago and I certainly wouldn't consider moving though they are little buggers to get rid of. Since I got dogs I never had that problem again. Now the only rats and mice I get are the dead ones the dogs bring in the house.
Suck it up princess they're just bugs they can't eat you.

| eww nasty bugs in my apt! Posted: 6/1/2008 12:43:52 AM | Sama, I wouldn't even think of moving into a place that had a history of roaches. They're extremely hard to get rid of and are a very hardy pest.
I would talk to your Residential Tenancy Branch and find out what your options are before moving in.
Ick, ick, ick and not a chance in hell!

| eww nasty bugs in my apt! Posted: 6/1/2008 1:27:42 AM | | i would so complain to the landlord .. not sure i would move in either ... bugs of any kind can not be good ... yuck yuck yuck | |

| eww nasty bugs in my apt! Posted: 6/1/2008 2:15:59 AM | | Ewwww, I wouldn't move in neither, I really dislike crawly things. The situation really sucks Sama, I think Miss BP's advise to call the Residential Tenancy people is probably the way to go. | |

| eww nasty bugs in my apt! Posted: 6/1/2008 5:51:55 AM | Sama First you have to document everything. Put it down in writing and keep copies. You can also contact Fraser Health and get there opinion and maybe have an inspection. Unfortunately Surrey doesn't have Standard of Maintenance bylaws concerning rental suits. Before you go to the R.T.B you should contact TRAC Tenant Resource & Advisory Centre They can give you all the info that you need to deal with the R.T.B. and your Landlord. Here is a link for you. http://www.tenants.bc.ca/ Good luck. | |

Unfortunately Surrey doesn't have Standard of Maintenance bylaws concerning rental suits. WHY doesn't THIS surprise me?
Sorry to hear Sami,...blech. RAID!!!!!!!!!!
|
| eww nasty bugs in my apt! Posted: 6/1/2008 2:20:15 PM | DON"T MOVE IN!!! Roaches are resilient creatures the roach problem is not likely to go away, even if they fumigate the place they are likely to come back. Many reasons for that, the structural part of the building and the tenants in it or the entire neighborhood.
Good luck Sammi, hope you find something better.

| eww nasty bugs in my apt! Posted: 6/1/2008 4:27:34 PM | awwwww thanks everyone for ur responses thus far!! Great to have friends to reinforce the decision I've already made. Sorry, the apt was not in Surrey but in Bby in a redeveloped area which I just love therefore took the apt after living with momsie for the past year. Good thing, I can always return to the nest....... maybe being a boomerang kid after all these years isn't such a bad thing after all!! Still want my own place to live for privacy aspect and being closer to work etc. Some other tenants didn't seem to be too phased but my nasty intruders.... maybe it was me that intruding onto their territory which is what I think may have happened when I was re washing out the cupboards! Still pretty grossed out and having to laundry all day really sux shyte! | |

| eww nasty bugs in my apt! Posted: 6/1/2008 9:38:41 PM | Going to the Residential Tendancy Board and Tribunal and court is a bit of an extreme.
You have solid grounds to end the tendancy and demand your deposit back right now. The other route is to have an exterminator come in, but I suspect this may not just be in your apartment, it could be a bigger problem, so yes, consider finding another place.
Call the BC RTB in the morning and get their opinion...read the Act..it is @75 pages long the last I checked. (I am a landlord)... .give her notice now that the suite is not livable and that you will not be moving in.
Make sure the notice is written. IF you want to make it look even more official...cc it at the bottom of the letter to the BC RTB for good measure. Make a 3rd copy and have her sign it as proof that she has received it...this copy is for you to keep.
Make sure she gets the notice and then move forward with any action if needed to get your money back. Make sure in your notice that you state that you want your deposit back ASAP.
good luck | |

| eww nasty bugs in my apt! Posted: 6/2/2008 7:33:31 PM | THANKS everyone!!! for ur responses. went to the landlady and got my money back as she did not cash the money order in. WOW!!! someone is really looking out for me. I consider myself extremely fortunate in this situation and thanks for all my friends who've offered their advice as well as support!! I was able to break my contract etc. The landlady felt bad for me and having the bugs in the apt. She was really nice about it all and realistically she didn't have to be so accomodating. All I can say is that I'm in awe of it all! | |

| eww nasty bugs in my apt! Posted: 6/2/2008 10:59:54 PM | Next time just write a cheque. Then all you have to do is cancel it.
If they won't take a cheque as a security deposit, you don't want to live there.
|
| eww nasty bugs in my apt! Posted: 6/3/2008 12:39:01 AM | And if you DO decide to move I know of a Coop in North Burnaby that has vacancy for 1-2 bedroom apartment/condo type with very reasonable rent compared to todays market values.
If you want anymore info, just drop me a line and I'll see what else I may be able to do for ya.
