Stelmach's "Raise"?
Posted: 6/3/2008 7:25:55 AM
So, who else is a little chaffed by this? How many of us here made as much or less than his raise last year (%54,000)? And, since 1/3 of their income is not taxed, that is basically a "Tax free raise" (I know there is more to it than that, but it was a 34% raise for him).

Just wondering what other people think of this. I hope they do force him to retract it and have a public committee review it.

I am more than a little chaffed by this!

But I ask this, with no opposition (sincere thanks to all you folks who don't think voting matters) what can be done about it? Eddie has a majority government, and really will be acting with a free rein for the next four years. There isn't anyone who can force him to retract this decision (is there?)

As a government employee, I can defend some workers deserve the pay they receive. Some people think government jobs are cushy, but they really aren't! They expect a lot of over time, and you're jam packed with committees and committee work, there's not enough hours in the day. A lot of the top guys work from home in the evenings and eventually their health and personal lives suffer for it.

I don't think it's fair of the Premier to give himself a raise, but he should give raises to the staff who have been with the gov a LONG time and who really deserve it.

It's not that I think it's cushy, but with all the threads I've seen about the cost of living increasing, but nothing being done to help those people, and here he is getting a raise larger that many of those same people make in a year. I'm not saying he didn't deserve a raise, I'm more saying that maybe he didn't need one so large.

I'm disgusted.

And I'm with Castaline on this one.

The % of his raise pretty much equals the % of people who did NOT vote!

I voted .... and it wasn't for him.

Gypsy, I'm totally with you on this one.

I work for the prov. gov too, and it REALLY pisses me off that they can just set their own raises like this without any real backlash. Our raises are pathetic compared to what these guys just got (well, pathetic by any standards I suppose LOL). When it comes time to start contract negotiations, christ, you'd think WE were asking for a 34% raise... Shit, we're lucky if we get 3-4%!, not even cost of living increases!!!

Total abuse of "power" IMO.

She was President, about two years ago, then she went AWOL and kept forgetting to sign in with her own password!!

To have a raise of +30% would make me very happy, but as a public service employee, we are limited as what we will get, budget is now set for 3 years in advance.

With all costs rising faster than our wages!! All unions should be encouraged to negotiate for a 'cost of living' raise as a standard clause in the contracts and paid quarterly, then we would at least still be able to buy a cup of coffee once in awhile!!

As for the Cost of Living increase... this was discussed at our lil' contract meeting last night, and the chair said that it was to be part of the % increase. lmfao, yeah, RIGHT, that evens it alllll out.

Depends on the local I think? I know our negotiations were wrapped up last year, so we're good for another couple of years. I think they knew a lot of people wouldn't be satisfied with their offer, so this last time, they included a signing bonus, which a lot of people fell for.

in an old forum called the rising cost of cola, i mentioned how dave bronconnier gave himself a 17 000 dollar raise due to inflation and most people argued my point saying he deserves it. i disagree wheres my substantial pay raise. oh yea i forgot, Majority voted conservative. that means we all gave him the OK to give himself a raise. food for thought next time u vote PC

Wouldn't have mattered which party got elected, there would have been a raise for the position, politicians need more income to support their non-tax-break after-hours habits!!

As a matter of curiosity, does anyone know what D'Arcy Lanovaz, the president of the Alberta division of CUPE, is paid? Or Doug Knight, president of AUPE? I tried googling it and looking at the CUPE & AUPE websites but couldn't find it.

That kind of information is not readily available, BUT, if a request is sent to the office requesting this information, and the proper FOIP section is referenced, they are required by law to provide this information.

The information has to be asked for by the position, not the person, and therefore would not include any "extras" that may be designated to the individuals.

But they do get a handsome base with travel allowances!
