so when was the last time you had a pair of Rollerskates ( rollerblades) on.
I spent a good chunk of my life at the Stardust Roller Rinks .
There was once about 15 Roller rinks in BC now there are none.
The newer generation will miss out on all the fun I used to have.
You do have one last chance to relive your youth june 13 , There is a reunion skate at the north Surrey rec center.

I’m a rollerblade nut! I have seven pairs of them, all for different needs and surfaces.
Yeah there’s three rinks in Walnut Grove that’s indoors, nothing like Stardust but it’s great in the winters.
Also out here every school is connected by paved walkways and you can blade for hours and never be on the same path twice.
Good luck in finding someone that’s in to it big time. I’ve been looking for years and there’s the odd person that will come out but I’ve yet to find anyone that can keep up.
Anymore info on the skate on the 13th?

I would spend anywhere from 4 to 6 hours on a Sat at the Stardust in North Van...it was one of the few places for kids to go.

Some weekends I would head down there on Sat and Sun....such good memories, it was within walking distance from our elementary school and we would do school skating parties.

I remember skating a Couples Only Skate to Bobby Vinton's Blue Velvet.... ...yeah...the Stardust rocked.

I think the last one standing was out in Whalley.... closed not too long ago. I didn't know that there were that many to start with.
Maybe it will make a comeback one day like the drive in movie theatre like the Starlight in Aldergrove.

it may bring back some of the stardust memories as alot of ex stardust people will be there , and stardust is supplying the skates (I'm sure if you ever rented them the blisters will bring back lots of memories)

Happy rolling everyone.

I use to love going to stardust when we were kids.... it was in Surrey somewhere, i think by a skytrain station stop? Anyways it was a cool hangout for us all in elementary school and you just weren't "cool" if you didn't have your parties there....lol. Great memories.....

Up in Prince George we have the Roll-a-dome.... a rollerskating place .... you can still rent rollerskates or bring your own rollerblades. Fun for the kids and cheap.... it's run down a bit, but the kids have a great time!

I spent a lot of time at the Stardust in Richmond. I just loved skating and would do it again in a heartbeat. I never got into blading.

I bought my own skates for indoor skating and I still have them.

I skated in the North Shore Stardust till the closed down and played hockey at the Surrey and Richmond location until they closed their doors.

Guess the property was worth more than they were getting from the skaters because I dont think it was that popular in the late 80's.

ex rollerskaters?? I still am a rollerskater!! I just skated public session at Lynden Skateway in Lynden Wa last night- along with the women that I coach in Derby! I used to be a rollerspeedskater, also did dance and hockey- in Lynden, abbotsford and Surrey. My mom used to skate at Rollerland in Vancouver, and at Edmonds in the 50's-61
OP, where is the North Surrey Rec. Center? I'll let my skaters know, and I'll see how many I can get to come out! My team is The Reaper Valley Rollers in the fraser valley.

I still skate myself and do go to lynden Quite often, also the skatedeck ,and skateking
its just a pain to have to go to a different country to get my skate fix.
I skated at all the stardust rinks and was at the last skate when each one closed.
I skated at rollerland and at the guilford rink.
and I still skate at some of the skateboard bowls also.
like selynn park in north van ,which was the first in bc.
the skate bowl at softball city.
but my favorite is still skating around stanley park at night.
I get together with friends quite often and skate at the lacross box at 104 and 132 nd in surrey it is light up at night.
if theres enought interest I would see about hosting a skate around stanley park or at the lacross box let me know.
The surrey rec is across the street from the surrey stardust ( now liquidation world) or right at the central city mall skytrain station.

Thanks for the info!!
The first rink I ever skated at was in Vernon. Ever go to JJ's in Abbotsford? My mom and I ran it as Skateworld in 93-94.
Do you mean Skatedeck in Everett?
I also skated in Ferndale(gone);Bellingham(gone) although there is a Bellingham Derby league; Marysville,Lynnwood.........oh boy could go on! too bad there's more rinks in washington than there are in all of Canada!!
I passed on the info on the skate in Surrey to my derby skaters- through Facebook. There's some groups on there that talk about rollerskating, lots of people want to skate again!

Lynden .... wow that brings back memories when we use to do the road trips after North Vancouver shut down. I remembered going down there and all the guys wanted to race me .... speed skating was big down there but not so much up here back then. I certainly liked skating on wooden floor although I first found it slippery

Wasn't there a JJ's Crystal Palace in the Valley as well?

Was Rollerland at the PNE?...next to the Food Forum ...and where they had All Star Wrestling and Roller Derby? Seems like I recall there was a roller rink there.

The Stardust in North Van was converted into many other stores... a Liquidation World, a Fabricland, a gym.... you could go inside and see the original lino on the floor..the rink floor ...it would always bring back memories.. I guess it was too difficult to tear up all that lino...it must of been glued down real good.
The building has finally been demolished...high end condos going up.

JJ's Crystal Palace closed........then reopened as JJ's- then ended as Skateworld when the owner of the building decided he wanted it back- shut us out- but it went under soon after. Abbotsford had a rink way before that; rink where Essendene turns into Yale;its now the hydro or telus building.
Portland(Oaks) is still there- they also have roller derby at the barn behind the big rink; yes the organ is still there too! They're having the Regional Artistic Champs there this weekend. Brenda Van Ornum is competing there in solo dance.
There also used to be a rink in Chilliwack; building is still there but now chopped into little stores.
Anybody else going friday?? Roller Derby(flat track) is back- so roller skating is making a comeback- there's even a place in Vancouver that sells skates.
And to the poster who said there wasn't speedskating up there- there was, but we mostly skated in the states until about '86- thats when i first went to nationals up here.
PG has a derby league too- so does vancouver.

Wow, this must be a Vancouver thing, I'm surprised at all the responses. I grew up in Montreal and don't remember even 1 roller rink......ice skating yes, but not roller skating.

dragonlady45, kids still skate, but on blades at skate parks or on the street. My son has a couple different pairs for different purposes. And yes, they still ice skate, although this does not seem to be as popular, (my son and I went this winter and had a great time).

Roller skating - what memories! I'm originally from Ontario and don't know about the rinks everybody's talking about. When I did live in Toronto though, I SKATED! Three times a week at the old Mutual. Anybody know that place? I still have my old lace up skates but now I have bad knees and don't think I could skate. Oh, I'd love to try though!

I skated in Edmonton AB all through my teen years. In the height of it during the 80s Edmonton had 2 rinks, Calgary had 2. lloyds in Calgary just celebrated a huge anniversary last year. Now does blading and other things to keep a float.

I competed on the provincial level in couples. Used to win prizes for shoot the duck on weekends. Even getting beat up once at the short lived dive rink didnt keep me away.

Never been since the 80s. Sorry I have to work Friday night. It would be fun.

I just never got into blading like I did at the rink. Been meaning to buy a pair for years. I guess I never had a girl rip my shirt open to pounding music on blades. Or been dumped by a GF like I was at the rink. The edmonotn roller skating club was my life on the weekends of my teens.

Have fun everyone. Oh the memories.

I took the kids swimming this week and the ice rink at the rec centre had no ice...and the rental shop was full of rollerblades.
There were kids inline skating for the summer indoors.

Karen Magnusson Rec Centre if anyone is interested.

There was roller derby at the old forum a couple of weeks ago about 30 of us were hired to be derby skaters on the tv show Psych. Its going to be aired in mid august. Afterwards I went down to the Rollerland building and took pics........to think my mom used to skate there- 50 years ago The Vancouver roller derby league(Terminal City) has been trying to get in there to skate.
If anybody is on facebook- take a look, there's lots of rollerskating groups on there- I started one for old roller rinks.
