The REAL scoop on Minnesota!
Posted: 6/8/2008 7:08:47 PM
I'm not a native Minnesotan but I enjoy living here. I was shocked to see someone else had left a thread that said people in MN are unfriendly, closed minded and on and on he went then complained that there's no one to date. Gee, if you have an attitude like that, how will you ever find someone special? So, I'm here to get the real story on life in MN from those of you who know it best. What do you love about Minnesota??

I'll go ahead and give my answer now. I've lived in 10 states, 2 countries, and visited 3 more states and 2 other countries in the last 8 years. I've been around the world and I can say without a doubt that Minnesota is one of the most beautiful places on earth. I'm in the southwest part of the state and you couldn't ask for more beautiful sunrises or sunsets. The people here are not only friendly, but generous and caring. The women.....WOW! Although 99.9% of them are out of my league, they don't treat me like it. I've come to think of MN as my second home.

I LOVE MINNESOTA!

Having lived here all my life yet traveling to other states regularly and a number of communities around Minnesota, I can share these observations:
1. Most of the people living outside of the larger metro areas tend to be more open and friendly. I've not had much problem developing chit-chat with strangers in those communities.
2. A few smaller communities seem to have a concentration of people with a certain elitest attitude; if you don't share that attitude you are not welcome.
3. Most people in the larger metro areas and surrounding communities tend to be unfriendly. I think it is a fear factor of strangers and probably because they are always surrounded by people they don't know. I don't think this is unique to Minnesota but is a metro issue everywhere.

I personally don't feel comfortable living on the prairie but you are so correct that sunrise and sunset are much more beautiful when you can actually see the horizon; for me, I gotta have the hills and trees. My second home is the Ozarks of Missouri and Arkansas.

Having just moved back to Minnesota after living the past 8 yrs in Ohio.........I have to say that the one thing I did miss was the friendliness of people. In ohio , I lived real close to the West Virginia border and it was a place of if you weren't born here you will never fit in here..........I have never found that in Minnesota. When coming back for a visit at the beginning of the month........I was sitting on a bridge watching my son and daughter-n-law fish.........I wasn't because I knew I would be moving back and didn't want to pay out of state license when I can buy one now as a resident........and this lady came by and just started talking to me...........I bet we talked about a half an hour or so...........that would never happen in Ohio and it made me glad to come home.

In the same thoughtwave however..........on this site........things seem to be different.........now this is a generalization not a stereotype........I have found that manners are somewhat forgotten. I have written numerous letters to men complimenting them on pictures they have posted such as lakes, horses and such and I have yet to recieve one Thank you..........Now I wasn't intending them to be a hit on them..........I was just admiring a pic they had.............seems to me manners is getting to be a thing of the past..........but then again maybe they are afraid that if they do answer I might expect something from them............they need to get real...........lol

I actually really love living here in the Twin Cities. There is always something to do, especially in the summertime. I like the fast pace of the city, but we still get to keep so much green space! That's not so common in some other metros.

I respectfully disagree with the poster that said we in the city tend to be unfriendly... I've had many nice conversations with strangers on the bus, at a festival, on the street corner, etc. Just like anywhere you go, there are all kinds of people. I can only think of one area we might be a little guarded; we do get panhandled a lot!

But, hey... a great cinema scene, a drive-in movie theater, friendly bars, larger-than-life attractions like MOA and the Sculpture Gardens... I don't think you can lose. :-)

To each its own, this state is beatiful but the minnesota "nice" is a myth. One thing I noticed about Minensota is that yeah you have some ginuwine since people, but then you also have those people who give you a fake smile. I hate that

I hear you about the fake smile but, honestly, isn't that part of what "Minnesota nice" is all about, even if I don't know you, may never see you again, couldn't care if you existed or not, you'll still get the smile, maybe a nod of the head, hell, I'll even wait the extra three seconds to hold the door for you :) And it is contagious, eventually the smile becomes real.
I have lived in several other parts of the country, admittedly for a short time, but I always come back, why? Everything, city life to the most rural you could imagine, world renowned nature and weather, decent economy (good thing for all the taxes), and yes, you betcha, the people.

There's a dirty little secret going around that says that "Minnesota nice" is just code for passive aggressive.

You know it is odd. I am a really friendly great person who is just really looking for someone to hang out with at first. But I am having the worst luck finding someone. I always thought, maybe it is because I am not on a pay site, maybe it is because I don't do the bar scene, etc etc. But I don't want to pay to just be ripped off or just take home some drunk chick. I would actually like to meet someone. So please help me end this horrible experience. I have been trying to date since I moved here in August of 08. Does anyone in MN close to Rochester want to hang out with a respectful, intelligent, fit, funny 27 year old who is employed? I promise I am very friendly and I am not some horrible looking monster. And hell I love kids (don't have any but I get along great with them!)

actually I had heard years back that Minnesota is in the top 3% of worst states to date in and even though I love it here I have to agree. I just moved back here from MO where I was in a relationship that ended but it was even easier to make friends- if you did not grow up with people or are a part of a clique good luck.. Me? I am open to new people always and looking for new friends.
Oh, I also met someone in MO at a bar and he lived here for a couple years and said the people here were back stabbers - well, I see that too .... BUT I love it here and hold out hope to meeting someone decent and maybe making some friends along the way...

So are you saying that Minnesota would be a great place to live if it just had less Minnesotans living there?

Gov Plawenty isnt going to run next term because he covered up a crime in Marshall Minnesota so hes getting out before the heat gets on him.

What did he do in Marshall, steal a box of icecream bars from the Schwans HQ? Is there anything out there besides Schwans?

No the judge got the gov to cover up a crime commited by a hot shot lawyer in town. If we did what that lawyer did we would be locked up for many years.

I'm just curious, what crime was that. I live in Marshall and haven't heard anything about it. Of course I don't really get too involved with the local gossip in town.
