Posted: 6/9/2008 7:41:30 AM | Are you wary of people who have been known to sleep around or openly admitted to having many sexual partners in their life time? Is it right and fair to judge someone on their past promiscuous activities?
Would it bother you if your partner admitted to sleeping with 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 or 1000+ people?
What characteristics would you associate with someone of a promiscuous nature?
Socially confident?
Narcissist?
Extroverted?
Hedonist?
Flirtatious?
Ego eccentric?
A heavy smoker?
A heavy drinker?

What does it matter, if someone's slept with many people beforehand, as long as safe?
Everyone goes through different phases in their lives, so if both consenting adults, it doesn't matter.
Sorry but i do like someone who is experienced really. No that doesn't mean hundreds of people they have slept with, but experience (as long as safe) is good. As long as faithful in the end to me, as i am them, then it doesn't matter about the past (unless they are renowned for cheating on a partner that is).
Sorry i can't 'label' anyone with the characteristics you mention, as everyone is different. People should be judged on their own merits, not labelled as a collective.
However, think that alcohol plays a good part in being promiscuous. | |

I have no idea what personality traits to look out for in someone who is/was promiscuous as in my experience they come from all walks of life. The only thing I have known promiscuous people to have in common is drugs, which i haven't touched for 12 years now | |

None of them at all.
I think if someone had slept with over 150 people i might think that they have been a bit promiscuous in the past but even then it really isn't that many people if you work it out over the years....
Most people i date are in their mid 30s, so they have could have been sexually active for 20 years... say if they have slept with 200 people in total that is only 10 a year!! | |

Well, there have been studies linking promiscuity to alcohol, smoking (and drug taking) which apparently lowers peoples' inhibitions in certain ways. Then again you don't need to be an expert to realise that...
MSG6: Only 10 a year? Is that good or bad in your books? Sleeping with 200 people in 20 years... hmmm. 1 a year would be fine with me.
Edit - Still, wouldn't you been concerned with contracting STDs/STIs? The more people you sleep with, the more of a chance you have of being infected. | |

If someone has had lots of sexual partners i would think about that rather than assuming that they were promiscuous. | |

You do NOT have to sleep around to become "experienced" sexually.
How on earth can you know what pleases "your partner" if you just move from one to the next to the next and so on.
Experience comes from taking that special journey of discovery with a chosen partner, not sleeping with as many people as you can.
Characteristics of a promiscuous person are for me.
Offering yourself on a plate. Accepting being talked to, or treated like a piece of meat. Thinking its "normal" having such low self esteem and self respect that you allow someone to use any of the number of holes you have to relieve themselves just so that you feel "wanted" for no matter how many few minutes.
Feeling the need to "pretend" you're whiter than white, by falsely seeming to be innocently shocked at kissing in public, nudity, naturism, then berrating those who aren't promiscuous just because they do kiss in public or are naturist.
Needing so much attention that EVERYONE notices, and that no matter who you're with at a public event you're lining up the next person.
Passing STD's, like its a normal life hazard. instead of taking precautions or even thinking before having sex with someone.
I'm pretty good as sussing out those who are, and no i wouldn't touch em with a 50ft bargepole.

N.B. for the record i smoke - i've been celibate completely for over two years, and was completely faithful to my now ex husband for 29 yrs. so.. i cant see the co-relation at all. | |

I don't understand this fascination with someone wanting or needing to know how many sexual partners someones had in their past, why would it be relevant?

I have no idea what characteristics would make up a promiscuous person, some people come across as needy, for some it's a power trip, for some yes alcohol lowers inhibitions, for some it's confidence etc | |

If i was to enter into a very serious relationship where i wanted a baby with someone then i would insist we were both tested before stopping using contraception anway.

Hang on, not everyone who has had more than a handful of partners does it for the attention and because they have low self esteem astro. Some people do it because they fancy a shag or are horny and want someone else to do the work rather than their hands.

If you want to be negative about it I suppose you could say that they are sufferring with low self-esteem and are total sleazoids but I prefer to look upon the promiscuous amongst us in a positve and glowing light.
As someone else has said we all go through phases throughout our lives so I wouldn't condemn anybody for being a male or female lothario. Naturally if I was dating someone and they were collecting phone numbers from other women whilst out with me or coming on strong to my friends, I'd be disgusted but otherwise, I couldn't give a damn what other people get up to.
Promiscuous people are generally quite funny to watch in action, I had a best friend who was very sexually uninhibited and easily turned on it seems. I'll never forget the time she was flirting with my brother in front of me - it wasn't just normal flirting either, she was most certainly coming on very strong to him and making the oddest facial expressions I'd ever seen her make. I think she scared the bejaysus out of him to be honest because he later asked me to not bring her round his again. | |

I know a few people who have "shagged around" a fair bit and mainly they are confident people who do it because of 2 reasons -
1. they like sex

What consitiues a lot of sexual partners and why does that make them promiscuous? It doesn't. It's how it's done and why that matters.

Posted: 6/9/2008 10:16:06 AM | I don't think you can stereotype a "promiscuous" person. We all have had reasons for having sex with people at different times in out lives, just some more often than others. So a reason that is a definite no-no for one person might be ok for someone else.
I'd say if it bothers you then don't ask for numbers. Sure, talking about sexual health is important, but it's also misinformation to say that using a condom prevents all STIs. Things like genital warts (HPV) and herpes are spread by skin to skin contact and oral sex therefore because you used a condom doesn't mean you are disease free and not everyone seems to realise this. Just because you don't have symptoms doesn't mean you aren't carrying something either.
However that could apply as much if you had one partner as if you had 100. While the odds are obviously greater the more you've had, it only takes that one time.
At the end of the day you have a choice about who you sleep with - you're an adult and make your own decisions. Personally, how many partners someone has had is not the be all and end all for me as I think there could be many reasons for that and I'm not going to be the one to cast the first stone. | |

Wouldn't you have trust issues and worry "I'm being used" until he/she dumps you because of the grass is greener attitude? Wouldn't you question why this individual has had numerous sexual encounters/flings/whatever?
How can you love (and have a relationship with) someone who has been shagged, touched, kissed, penetrated by 100+ different people?
I think certain people succumb to peer and social pressures to "sleep around" anyway and yes I prefer quality over quantity aswell.

Everyone uses everyone else in their own way realy anyhow, after all it is them that want a realationship of somekind.
Just becuase someone has slept with a certain amount of people wouldn't nesecarily mean that they cannot be trusted.
Worry about what ever issues you have if it happens untill then enjoy what time you have together.

i wouldnt want to penalise someone for having the morals not to open their legs for just anyone
what i personally would expect to be an average amount of sexual partners differs according to their age
10 partners for an 20 year old is a bit too much
10 partners for a 30 year old isnt that much
10 partners for a 40 year old is less than expected and so on
i wouldnt want to be with someone who has a history of one night stands or shags people every time theyre drunk, its not the sort of person i am and not the sort of person i want to be with | |

If your current partner asked you the question how many people you have slept with? Would you say
1) None of your business.
2) You would give an anwser where you UP the number of people you have really slept with.
3) You would give an answer where you LOWER the number of people you have really slept with.
4) An honest answer.
