I'm familiar with Jazz legends like louis armstrong and charlie parker and john coltrane but who are some modern jazz artists/bands I'd like if I like those three? Please none of that smooth jazz crap

Ok. So here's a few. Only living guys below. There's a lot more I would put otherwise. Some of them sort of cross over generations, like Pat Martino or Chick Corea.

Kenny Garrett -alto
Keith Jarrett -piano
Wynton Marsalis (and anyone from his family)
Mulgrew Miller-piano
Kenny Barron -piano
Chick Corea -piano
Bobby Broom -guitar
Peter Bernstien -gutiar
Larry Goldings -organ
Pat Martino -guitar
Micheal Brecker-tenor
Bireli Legrene -gutiar

Happy listening!

Kenny Garrett is f*ckin' phenominal...damn near ground breaking stuff man....

Lina Allemano...blows a mean trumpet...her quartet is much better live than in the studio...even though I'm sure they're "live" in the studio

Medeski Martin & Wood....some might not consider them jazz because they've been know to use DJ's ...but these people are ignorant...these guys are f*cking JAZZ

The Vandermark 5 ...Ken Vandermark has apprently received "genius" grants...'nough said....

EST...Esborne Svenson Trio? google these guys...very refreshing arrangements...the bassman loves his bow...and his WAH pedal! I'm rediculously excited to hear these guys open for Scofield in a few weeks!!!!! Might just steal the show...just like Mr. Garrett did....

If you ever find yourself in NYC, go to almost any small jazz club near NYU (Smalls, Fat Cat, 55 Bar, etc), really cool young, modern jazz scene. Commercially, I like the Bad Plus, MMW, Chick Corea, Bela Fleck

Keith Jarrett, although im not sure if he is "modern" by some folks definitions
Check out Charles Lloyds band Sangam...its DEFINETELY not jazz standards

Those are just a few I like and im guessing you and I have similar tastes in jazz

I'll add a few names to the list:

Dave Holland (great bassist and composer)

Joshua Redman (Saxophonist)

I'll second Medeski, Martin and Wood

Brad Mehldau (Great pianist and composer)

The Chris Tarry Group (A bassist/writer in New York, who is from the band Metalwood)

Norwegian Band Beady Belle. They're not so straight up jazz but I love all their stuff. Check out the album CEWBEAGGAPIC

Happy listening!

RIP Esbjorn Svensson...two weeks before I was supposed to see them live...a tragic accident cut him down in his prime....EST really pushed the envelope....very fresh stuff that will now age like fine wine....

John Scofield is by no means young....but he was playing some "modern" stuff that night....the bass player looked about 80 yrs old and still ripping it up....VERY impressive....

My favorite artist 50 or younger: Wynton Marsalis Jr, Roy Hargrove , Joshua Redman, Donald Harrison, Christian McBride, Terence Blanchard, Marcus Roberts, Dianne Reeves(50ish) Jennifer Sanon, Reuben Rogers, Walter Blanding, Wycliffe Gordon, Peter Martin, Greg Hutchinson, Norman Brown, Jeff Kishiwa, Charenee Wade and Brian Owens.

I still love Ramsey Lewis, Chick Corea, George Benson Mulgrow Miller, Boney James and Herbie Hancock not to mention many others. Hey, I even like Johnathan Butler's Gospel and Jazz tracks.

Oscar Peterson died last year in his 80's but I dont think he's gotten his dues as a great pianist.
