The office "oracle"

An oracle is a person or agency considered to be a source of wise counsel or prophetic opinion;
I came across an interesting question at work today (well for certain values of interesting). Now I tend to like a new question, and so I like to find the answer to any new questions. So having found the answer, I was able to impart this knowledge to others. Thing is, as I always like to find an answer, I tend to find that I get asked a lot of the more obscure questions that relate to work, and some really odd questions that are completely unrelated to work. In fact it has reached the point now that people tend to come to me as the first point of call for any questions they may have, often this upsets people that know the answer when I don't, particularly as I will go to those I expect to know the answer, I do my own research if I don't expect anyone else to know. This means I am seen as a sort of office "oracle" (actually I have rather dubiously been nicknamed "ORAC", which is apparently the all knowing computer from Blake 7). And so we come to my questions.
How many people know someone who they go to first if they need an answer?
Why do you go to that person first, even if someone else may know more on a specific subject?
How many of you are that person in your office?
How does it make you feel being the office "oracle"?

I am the office oracle but only for work things, I think this is because I have been in the job a long time and also the job I do requires me to understand and check the work of others. So really it is a more of "I need to know" basis.

Gets very boring though, people asking stuff all day long. But love it when someone asks something I don't know, I dash off and research until I have all the answers.

^^^put it in the freezer?

How do you make blue?

Quite simple, generate energy with a wavelength of about 440–490 nm.

Blue is simply any surface which absorbs radiations of all visible wavelenghts except those which relate to 'blue'

That's why all primary colours added together = White (IE, the ambient diffuse light we see by)

OP, if you take as long to answer a question as you do to ask one, I'll opt for the encyclopedia or google thanks.

How do you make blue?
Making blue is an interesting problem. First a little lesson in biology. The human eye is typically trichromatic (that is it sees colour through the relative intensities of three colours). The three primary colours we see are Red, Green, and Blue. Because of it's status as a primary colour it is not possible to make blue by mixing colours. So the only way to make blue is to make blue light from some other energy source. Now white light is made up of all three of the primary colours in approximately equal proportions, so we can be said to be making blue by turning on a light. however the exclusive making of blue without the other colours would require us to make just blue, or far more blue than the other colours. Now the options for making blue light include heating an ideal black surface to approximately 9000K (not really practical) or using different chemicals to produce blue light. Copper Chloride is used in fireworks for example, and Gallium Nitride is one substance used to make blue LEDs. These are not the only ways to make light, and as such not the only ways to make blue light. But certainly making "blue" is only possible through making blue light.

I don't tend to ask many questions, I tend to do research. I think the wait is worth it though. I gave a far more in depth answer than you did :P

I think I am in a similar situation - and the reason is because I am helpful. If I don't know the answer I try to find out. I'll stop what I'm doing for 5-10 mins and make a call or look something up on the system for them. Other people just say "sorry I don't know" and carry on with what they are doing leaving the person standing there.

If you want to get something done - ask a busy person
