Dentists (or rather lack of)

So i decided today that i really should find myself a dentist, so i thought y'no i would just ring around and see which surgeries were taking on NHS patients

..........fast forward 20 calls later .......... answer NONE!!!

Out of the 20 or so surgries in Exeter NONE of them are currently taking on patients. Was given a number to call (primary care trust) and they told me it could be anything from 6-12 months before i hear anything

My question is..... is it just Exeter that is crap or is it also effecting the rest of the country?

My nearest NHS dentist that will take on a patient is 50 miles away, and it'd take me 4 hours to get there on public transport if they would take on someone from outside their area, but they won't!

Everywhere is crap

Place near me stopped taking nhs patients altogether and told people that they would only register private patients on a first come first served basis. The que was over 1/4 mile long.

My brother has just returned from visiting a friend in Poland and had his teeth sorted there at a fraction of the cost. I went to a dentist about 5 years ago and the estimate for doing the work was £850. The work still hasnt been dont. Will be taking a trip to Poland soon I think.

There's a brilliant NHS dentist surgery not far from me in Nottingham . It's a big place - 17 surgeries under one roof , extremely modern and most of the surgeons seem to be Polish ..............

Nope, see 2 posts above yours.

Yea friends of mine have said exactly that...may be different in this case...but every time someone says oh i know of,,,and you go check there are no spaces. Also i know there are none in the South Wales area where i lived, also there are none in my parents area as i had to pay on an emergency appointment £35 just for them to tell me it was going to cost nearly a grand to have it done and can only be done private. Poland would cost about £300 all in.

NHS here was cheaper

So is real estate on the moon, no bloody good if you cant get it.

Many dentists are turning their practices over to private patients as the NHS simply do not cover their costs. It works like this, Dentists now instead of being paid for each item of work they perform, dentists will receive a 'block contract' from their local primary care trust, committing them to a set number of 'units' of treatment over a year. This new policy is now a year old.
'The British Dental Association said 2,000 dentists left the NHS last year' obviously to go private, 338,000 people lost access to an NHS dentist in the first three months of 2007 however, they do take a % of people but only to take on that NHS block. Which is where you are hearing that there were spaces available. These are snapped up as are now the Private patients as the clinics only have limited spaces. We do have an influx of Polish dentists here which I am told are good, but I think this will be short lived.
It is the children that i feel sorry for as there is no obligation for a dentist to see anyone, example of many

there are figures showing the extent but it is clearly a problem that many face and the situation is a long way from being resolved.
I certainly dont think that health care in this country should be a postcode lottery. It should be free and readily available.

Same here in the midlands ;-(
I hadn't had a dentist for years because they were all full, one receptionist even told me it was because there were too many imagrants on their books! -great not.
I finaly got a dentist only because he is one of our clients, thankfully, as I had to have my wisdom teeth removed by surgery and general anesthetic.
My mum told me to brush my teeth more if they are hurting - didn't make the slightest bit of difference - we now know why!lol.
