Touring The Maritimes, What Do I NOT Want To Miss?

I am retiring in a few months, and I will be leaving Victoria, B.C. and driving out to the Maritimes in the spring of 2009. My son is getting married in Ontario in Aug , 2009, so before that, I want to visit Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, P.E.I., and Newfoundland. I love the outdoors, camping, boating, etc, and I also love the night life, going dancing (mostly country), I love classic rock, blues and country....I love going to jam sessions, even get up and sing a couple myself, after some liquid courage, lol. So where do I want to go, what do I want to see? I am very excited about this trip.....I've never met a Maritimer I didn't like. Come on people, tell me about your beautiful east coast.

Thanks Vampy......George Street, Trapper John's, and Ches's fish and chips are definitely on my to do list. We have a wonderful fish and chip shop here in Victoria that I've been going to for over 30 years, and I've yet to find a place that makes better fish & chips, so we'll have to see if Ches's measures up!

Sky Pilot...

I was born and raised on Cape Breton Island. Louisbourg is a must for sure.

I would also recommend the Alexander Graham Bell museum in Baddeck.

The Cabot Trail is second to NONE for scenic beauty. About 1/2 round the trail stop by Pleasant Bay and do the whale watching tour. They guarantee whale sightings or your money is refunded.

If you're stopping by Halifax there is lot's here to see too...Like:

Peggys Cove...

Another area you might want to see is Yarmouth and the Acadian Shore. From St. John, New Brunswick you can begin by taking the Princess of Acadia over to Digby. In Digby you can take Route 1 down to Yarmouth. You will go thru some wonderful little villages with much to see and experience of the Acadian culture. Visit the Pubnico's too while in the area. There are always ethnic festivals filled with good music, good food and wonderful people. Be sure to try the Rappie Pie! This is a regional favorite that will surprise you. You can take a boat tour of the Tusket Islands, see the operating wind farm and in Yarmouth get a glimpse of the Cat--a high speed ferry that is an adventure in itself. Bay Ferries offers trips from Maine to Nova Scotia often seeing whales and dolphins and a chance to gamble too. Yarmouth is their NS port of call. The Red Knight offers music and dancing and Che Christophe offers great food and a real Acadian music kitchen party. Captain Kelly's has a real pub atmosphere. The Grand Hotel has an excellent menu and even a dinner theatre with a great show. Be sure to see what is happening at the Yarc--always good entertainment from comedy shows to music and theatre productions! Digby scallops are something you have to try--best there is! The wonder of Cape Forchu Light and watching the boats bring a serenity not to be missed. Head on back toward Peggy's Cove and Shelburne and then on to Halifax.
This area is a hidden jewel not to be missed. Something for everyone!

Wow, can't believe it's been almost a year since I started this thread, and here I am retired and less than 2 months away until I depart for points east. Thanks to all who took the time to tell me about things and places I don't want to miss while I'm out there, but besides seeing the countryside and points of interest, I also want to meet the people. Although I've never been out there, I have met a few Maritimers and Newfies, and I've never met more wonderful, down to earth, just plain gosh darn fun people to hang with, anywhere. I most definitely will be attending any POF events that are going on in the area I am in at the time, especially, since I love country music and dancing, the Rodeo Lounge in Dartmouth. Totally sounds like my cup of tea. Can't wait people, so I'd love to hear more about your part of the world. If you don't want to post here and would prefer to e-mail me directly, please feel free, I have removed all restrictions. Also, I will be travelling with my dog, a very well behaved Maltese Poodle that weighs just 9 lbs, so there is probably going to be times I will need to leave her at a doggy day care(ie, I may want to go to the country music festival on PEI), so if anyone knows of anyone that provides that kind of service, please let me know. Thanks again to all that take the time to advise and inform....later people!

If you get the chance try stopping in Gros Mourne National Park, and doin the Gros Mourne Mountain Hike. Its 16km return hike but you will be rewarded with some of the most beautiful and amazing scenery in Canada. Nothing beats standing on the edge of a 2400 ft cliff and looking out to see 7+ 1000 ft waterfalls.....its like the land before time.

I'd also take the time to check out Cape Breton and its many amazing beaches and trails. Its a great place at the end of the summer when the ocean warms. Or even relaxing on the Bras d'Or Lakes which are home to the warmest salt waters north of the Carolina's.

If you decide to spend sometime here ( The Cape) I'm sure I could suggest a crap load of things to do and see. Get intouch if this sounds good....
Just remember to take your time and enjoy it.....the best spots cant be found in pamphlets or magazines....

If you plan on spending a night in this area, there's a fantastic cottage area on the coast in Margaree... make sure you're up before sunrise... absolutely breathtaking!!!! Each cottage has a full view of the ocean... and if it's the same people that are running it now as a few years ago, you'll be treated to pure Cape Breton hospitality at it's finest...

Prince Edward Island. The whole island as far as I'm concerned.

I don't think Newfoundland is considered part of the "martimes" per se but in terms of the east coast, the Viking Trail that includes Gros Morne is something to see. Especially, whale watching off the northern tip of NF near St. Anthony's. Even if you don't see any whales, the majestic and rocky coast is worth the price of admission alone.

I agree.....
