| Calgary Posted: 6/12/2008 10:27:09 PM | Just a little bit curious here. I am considering moving to calgary for work and just a general better area for my interests (skiing, rock climbing, biking). I currently live in Ontario which sadly isn't the best place for 2 out of the 3.
So would anyone be willing to answer some questions?

| Calgary Posted: 6/14/2008 6:51:25 PM | | I like Calgary and I have traveled quite a bit. There is always work here but be warned, there are more men than women. K, maybe someone can correct me on that if I am wrong. | |

| Calgary Posted: 7/1/2008 1:27:57 AM | | I've lived in calgary for 16 years....am originally from the toronto area. What would you like to know? Skiing here is amazing. | |

| Calgary Posted: 7/2/2008 6:22:02 PM | well banff (in the rockies) is a little less than an hour away. some of the most beautiful skiing/boarding in canada (second only to whistler but then i'm biased...lol)
great growing nightlife - there's the stampede every july which is probably the biggest western canadian summer party going on. it's a fairly young community - lots of young people have moved there for work on opportunities along with young families. expensive to rent and to buy although there has been a bit of a market correction in the last couple of months. winters are cold but they have chinooks which warm things up and melt the snow. the bad thing is that these same weather patterns that bring the warm air chinooks can also bring snowfall in july!
men continue to outnumber women, oil and gas companies have many hq's in the city, and its affluence is quite a draw for various business sectors.
what else do you want to know?

| Calgary Posted: 7/11/2008 11:08:23 PM | | Great skiing, climbing (rock and ice) and biking (road and off road) in driving distance from Calgary. I'm about to move from the Hat to the Calgary region. There are great places to get connected to like-minded people (UofC outdoor centre) and the city has a lot to offer in a lot of different areas (music, art, night life, dining...) The cost of living has gone through the roof here in the past couple of years, but most people I've run into say that the opportunity to access great rec. areas far outweighs the negatives (unless they're having to drive the Deerfoot or McLeod Trail in rush hour.) I'd have to agree with them...hence my moving this summer! | |

| Calgary Posted: 7/12/2008 5:40:04 PM | Straying off Calgary a little, can anyone describe Okotoks just to the south. Is it an affluent city or a run down suburb for Calgary etc. I'll get the rose tinted version from its chamber of commerce also.
I'm specifically interested to visit the Drake Landing Solar Community housing development there. They store summer solar heat in the ground for winter heating which is a world first. As a member of my towns energy committee, I am explaining this amazing technology to everyone and want to encourage my town in MA to establish relations with Okotoks.

| Calgary Posted: 7/12/2008 6:30:44 PM | | Okotoks is definitely not a run down suburb of Calgary! Yes, it's a bedroom community for the most part, many people live there and commute to Calgary. Drake Landing is a nice spot...not the entire development is solar. But the community of Okotoks has a lot of great 'green' initiatives. They have some great water management plans in place and Mike Holmes of "Holmes on Homes" has decided to create a sustainable development in Okotoks because of the initiatives the community has in place. It is also becoming the commercial centre for the communities south of Calgary - Wal-Mart etc. They are working on redeveloping their downtown core and have some great little locally run stores. All in all a nice little spot on the map! | |

| Calgary Posted: 7/12/2008 9:13:14 PM | Thankyou very much Ykn Grl for the heads up. Now I even more interested to visit both Calgary and Okotok and see DLSC first hand. Meanwhile I will try and persuade my town manager and COC to connect with Okotok and Mike Holmes. | |

| Calgary Posted: 7/16/2008 6:14:04 AM | calgary has lots of hiking in the Kannanaskis area. There are also lots of parks and nature areas. the Zoo is on an island in the middle of the river and is very cool. Banff and the mountains are only an hour away, Sunshine Village, one of the ski areas just west of Banff offers hiking in the summer. You take a 20 minute gondola ride in the heart of the mountains and there are trails galore. In winter there is lots of great skiing, both x country and downhill, snowmobile trails etc. I moved to Ontario from Calgary 3 years ago, and at times miss it dearly.
Hope this helps | |
